Book excerpt: Mansfield and Vietnam: A Study in Rhetorical Adaptation is the first major work to examine the role played by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, Democrat from Montana, in the formulation and execution of U.S. Vietnam policy. Drawing upon material from the Mansfield Papers, personal interviews, public speeches, and recently declassified documents, Olson traces Mansfield's journey from ardent supporter of Diem in the late 1950s to quiet critic of LBJ in the mid-1960s, and finally, to outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Olson focuses his attention on Mansfield's speaking ability and his use of the written word, analyzing the ways in which they proved crucial in shaping the policies of the Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford presidential administrations. He also examines the way personal and political situations converged to force Mansfield into the center of the stormy Vietnam controversy, and eventually into a position of leadership in the campaign to end America's military presence in Southeast Asia. To date, little has been done to evaluate the roles played by key congressional figures in the Vietnam War debate; thus, Mansfield and Vietnam is bound to become a significant contribution, not only to rhetorical studies, but also to twentieth-century diplomatic history and to the study of congressional-presidential relations.

Book excerpt: PRAISE FOR CHUCK MANSFIELDS NO KIDS, NO MONEY AND A CHEVY A Politically Incorrect Memoir A New Book by a Former Marine and Vietnam War Veteran Of Chuck Mansfields No Kids, No Money and a Chevy award-winning novelist and essayist Cynthia Ozick writes, "Chuck Mansfield is a first-rate writer of wit, charm, and passion, who applies a clarifying integrity to whatever subject his fine mind alights on. Having been schooled in excellence, he holds it as his lifelong standard; and he is, besides, an embodiment of everything that is meant by the term American Hero - courtly, brave, generous, and in love with family, faith, and country. To read his memoir is to rejoice in the warm presence of human devotion and intellect." New York literary agency executive Jack Scovil calls No Kids, No Money and a Chevy "a fascinating read." He writes, Mansfield "come(s) through clearly as a very remarkable man who commits to life and the task before him with passion and dedication and integrity. Chaminade (High School)s reaction to the WTC tragedy (indeed the ethos of the whole Chaminade experience) was especially moving, and individual tributes to some of (Mansfields) fellow Marines quite affecting and inspiring. Some of (his) viewpoints and assessments couldnt be more timely; (his) critique of business practices fits right in with what were learning about the frauds at Enron and Global Crossing and (his) judgments of some societal trends are also in keeping with the climate of public opinion that has produced the current successes of OReilly and Buchanan. (His) litany of facts about the Vietnam War deserves to be widely circulated." Retired English professor and writer Robert P. Meikle writes that "everything in this book is the unfiltered (Mansfield): the impeccable use of language, the meticulous attention to detail, the total recall of dates Some are more successful than others when it comes to taking a really honest look at themselves. The trick is to translate that self-awareness onto the written page. It is that translation that (Mansfield does) so successfully. This is a guy who not only has had a good life, but who APPRECIATES all that he has had in (it), especially when it comes to family and friends. Thats an important distinction for that unknown reader to pick up on." New York attorney Paul G. Burns has written, "(Mansfields) work shares a problem common to each and every book that I totally and thoroughly enjoyed reading: it had a last page. an outstanding read!!" Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist, USN (Ret.), former Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare), aircraft carrier fighter pilot and author, says "I was enormously impressed" The Vietnam Era section in Mansfields book, fully a third of the work, "represents the kind of personal history that needs to be told about all wars but about Vietnam particularly." According to P. Henry Mueller, retired Citigroup executive, author and Marine veteran of World War II, "A page-turner," No Kids, No Money and a Chevy "is hard to put down. The Vietnam portion is in the excellent style of Micheners Tales of the South Pacific. The character descriptions throughout the book are well done." The book is "packed with interest, and (the) politically incorrect views add an important and refreshing edge. Not only that, (Mansfield) present(s) (his) views in an instructive way." CEO and business owner Donald J. Steinert says, "I was most impressed with the way I am able to relate to your book as a former Marine Vietnam veteran." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spellbinding biography of one of the most powerful and dignified men ever to come to DC—Senator Mike Mansfield. Mike Mansfield's career as the longest serving majority leader is finally given its due in this extraordinary biography. In many respects, Mansfield's dignity and decorum represent the high-water mark of the US Senate: he was respected as a leader who helped build consensus on tough issues and was renowned for his ability to work across the aisle and build strong coalitions. Amazingly, he would have breakfast every morning with a member of the opposing party. Mansfield was instrumental in pushing through some of the most influential legislation of the twentieth century. He was at the helm when the Senate passed landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the creation of Medicare, and the nuclear test ban treaty. Mansfield played a crucial role in shaping America's foreign policy, corresponding with JFK about his opposition to the growing presence of the US in Southeast Asia. As ambassador to Japan, his conversations with Cambodia and China paved the way for Nixon's historic trip to China in 1972.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was most responsible for the Vietnam War? Did President Lyndon Johnson simply continue the policies of his predecessors, Eisenhower and Kennedy, or was he the principal architect? What responsibility did Congress share? Was the Senate a coequal partner in creating the Vietnam policy or a secondary player? Focusing on the U.S. Senate’s role in the war, this history records the various senators’ views in their own words. The author demonstrates that during the 20-year conflict—as throughout American history—the president was the principal formulator of policy on war and peace, including during the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Mike Mansfield's influential fifteen-year reign as Senate Majority Leader is colored with some of the most important events of this century: the election of John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy and King assassinations, student and political unrest of the late Sixties, Vietnam, Watergate, the Nixon resignation, and numerous important pieces of legislation from the era, among them the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Valeo, Secretary of the Senate under Mansfield, writes about the Senate and Mansfield's role in national affairs from 1961-76. He argues that Mansfield was instrumental in shaping a more egalitarian kind of Senate than that of the 1950s, when Lyndon B. Johnson was Majority Leader.
