Book excerpt: In existing man-machine systems the human operator is typically presented a predesigned display and he must adapt his control techniques in an attempt to optimize overall system performance. Ultimate performance achieved may not rise to the designer's expectation or to the operator's capability because the design process does not account for the operator's adaptability. In this research program, ship control performance of the Officer of the Deck (OOD) was observed and analyzed in a series of simulator experiments involving ship transit and obstacle avoidance. Three types of displays were included in the analysis. OOD control rules, and measures and criteria which describe the control technique used as well as the criteria employed in controlling the ship were derived from the individual performance data. The effect of display type on the measures and criteria which were apparently optimized by the subjects was determined. (Author).

With today's computer and display technology, it is possible to provide virtually any display function desired including automating many of the information processing tasks previously performed by the human operator. However, the relationship between display design and total system (people and machine) performance must be known in order to systematically select display features. The object of this research program was to investigate system performance models for ship control as an aid to ship display and control design. A human operator model, which represents the total system response by identifying the criteria optimized by that response, was developed to represent the ship control performance of the Officer of the Deck (OOD). In addition, a sensitive contact (ship) avoidance measure was developed which detects conditions leading to ship collisions and near collisions. OMAC models representing performance obtained with each display design reveal that performance differences are explained by differences in a constraint self-imposed by the operator to select only a portion of the display information in order to contro.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Freiburg, West Germany, September 22-25, 1980, entitled "Manned Systems Design, New Methods and Equipment". The conference was sponsored by the Special Programme Panel on Human Factors of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, and supported by Panel VIII, AC/243, on "Human and Biomedical Sciences". Their sponsorship and support are gratefully acknowledged. The contributions in the book are grouped according to the main themes of the conference with special emphasis on analytical approaches, measurement of performance, and simulator design and evaluat ion. The design of manned systems covers many and highly diversified areas. Therefore, a conference under the general title of "Manned Systems Design" is rather ambitious in itself. However, scientists and engineers engaged in the design of manned systems very often are confronted with problems that can be solved only by having several disciplines working together. So it was felt that knowledge about newly developed methods and equipment, applicable in the design process, is of common and increasing interest for all those who are engaged in the design of manned systems, from the earliest con ceptual design phases until operation under real circumstances. This seems to be particularly true in view of restricted resources of manpower and energy.

Book excerpt: Human factors measurement has characteristics that set it apart from psychological or engineering measurement and for that reason, human factors testing and evaluation deserves special treatment. The many excellent texts available in the behavioral area do not give an adequate picture of this topic, and this is particularly unfortunate because testing and evaluation (T&E) is an integral part of human-machine system design and operation. The emphasis in this book is on why and how to conduct such testing. One of its outstanding features is its pragmatism; based on his past experience in system testing, the author recognizes the difficulties that occur in testing and indicates how these may be overcome or minimized. Special attention has been paid to the context in which T&E is conducted. Although the book contains detailed procedures for performing T&E, the logic and the conceptual foundation of testing have not been overlooked. Comparisons are made with laboratory-centered experimentation. For those with research interests, the author points out the many research questions that can be answered by system testing. An illustrative case history of a T&E program for a fictional system has been included to provide ``real life'' context. Special problem areas in T&E are emphasized, in particular human error data collection, the evaluation of computerized systems and software, the measurement of maintenance technician and team performance; workload and training effectiveness testing. Special attention is also paid to environmental testing (e.g. temperature, lighting, noise, vibration, etc.). One chapter reviews all the relevant T&E literature including government documents that may not be readily available to the general reader. As part of the preparation for writing this text a survey was made of 45 distinguished T&E specialists in order to determine their characteristic T&E practices. The book will be useful not only to the human factors professional who specializes in T&E, but to all students and practitioners interested in human factors and work measurement.
