Book excerpt: Acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces are artificial materials and surfaces composited with meta-atoms and inclusions at the subwavelength scale but behave homogeneously in the macroscopic scale with unusual properties in the manipulation of sound waves. Most of the research in this field has focused so far on the study of the local response of the materials and surface properties but neglected the nonlocality. This dissertation focuses on the study of nonlocal phenomena in acoustics, and explore their unusual abilities in the control and manipulation of sound waves. The dissertation starts with the exploration of pressure-velocity coupling phenomena, also known as Willis coupling or acoustic bianisotropy, in a single subwavelength inclusion and derived general bounds on the Willis response of acoustic scatterers, indicating these bounds can be reached through proper design. A systematic design approach of reciprocal Willis inclusion has been outlined for the realistic implementation of acoustic inclusions with Willis response from zero, mild to maximum. My study shows that reciprocal Willis responses can be mainly attributed to geometrical asymmetries. By breaking the system’s time-reversal symmetry through bias flow, Willis coupling has also been observed in geometry-symmetrical systems. Then, I changed my viewpoint from single inclusion to the collective response of metamaterials at the macroscopic level. By combining moving media with zero-index acoustic propagation, giant bianisotropy and extreme nonreciprocity were achieved in the metamaterials with modest mechanical motion. This special acoustic response was utilized to induce non-reciprocal positive-to-negative sound refraction and the non-reciprocal metamaterial lens which could focus object when the excitation is from a specific side. Finally, the study was extended to metasurface, and explore their unusual properties by considering the strong coupling between neighboring elements. The general impedance relation with the consideration of coupling between neighboring elements was proposed and the mechanism was applied to the design of nonlocal passive metasurfaces which could overcome the limitations of local designs, and achieve unitary efficiency for extreme beam steering. The nonlocal metasurface has also been applied to the design of acoustic hyperbolic metasurface requiring extreme anisotropic impedance which was considered impossible in the local metasurface

They have been a highly active research area to control the behavior of acoustic waves in recent years. Acoustic metasurfaces, as the 2D version of acoustic metamaterials, have opened up unprecedented possibilities for controlling acoustic waves at will, offering a solution of molding wave propagation within a thin sheet of structures. While the majority of the research in acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces are curiosity-driven and have shown promising progress in overcoming the fundamental physical limitations of acoustics, there has been a scarcity of acoustic metamaterials research that can have a direct and immediate impact on real-world applications. This thesis makes contributions to the fields of acoustic metamaterials by examining the challenges of some real-world applications at audio and ultrasound frequencies and putting forward novel metamaterial-based acoustic devices that overcome these limitations. In this thesis, we start to tackle the ultra-low frequency (below 100 Hz) sound absorption problem, which is a long-standing issue in room acoustics, by designing a low-frequency broadband, high absorption, near-omnidirectional acoustic metasurface absorber at a deep subwavelenth thickness guided by the causality limit. Then we extend the sound absorption in room acoustics to HVAC system, fundamentally from a one-port system without acoustic transmission to a two-ports system with acoustic transmission. A near-perfect absorption (99% absorption) is demonstrated when the spatial period of monopole-dipole resonators is close to one working wavelength (95% of the wavelength). The condition for perfect absorption is to render degenerate monopole-dipole resonators critically coupled. Besides absorption, loudness enhancement of acoustic transducers is another challenging issue at low audio frequency band. By leveraging the resonant coupling effect between the transducer and metamaterial resonances, a 3--7 dB broadband sound pressure level (SPL) improvement of acoustic radiation in the bass range (50--700 Hz) can be achieved. In addition to airborne acoustics at low audio frequency, enormous underwater applications at ultrasound frequency exist. One of the application challenges along this direction is the weak ultrasound transmission through a metallic wall due to the significant impedance mismatch between water and the wall, which impedes wireless ultrasonic power transfer and data transmission in aeronautic and aerospace engineering and nuclear engineering. We design a pillar-based acoustic metamaterial for wireless and contactless ultrasonic power transfer and data transmission through a metallic wall by leveraging the pillar's vertical elongation mode.

Book excerpt: Conventional acoustic diffuser designs are phase gratings on reflecting surfaces which are used to reduce specular reflections and the strength of room modes. Traditional designs have some requirements that limit implementation in practice, such as a thickness that is inversely proportional to the design frequency and directional scattering that results from the periodic arrangement of diffuser unit cells. This work investigates two different acoustic metasurface (AMS) designs as solutions to reduce thickness without compromising diffuser performance and to achieve improved sound diffusion for a given geometry. A coiled-space AMS design is proposed to reduce diffuser thickness by designing long and tortuous channels with minimal loss to enable tailored phase variation with minimally thick diffuser elements. Dimensions found from a parametric study using the finite element method (FEM), AMS diffuser elements with a quarter of the original depth were fabricated using additive manufacturing and experimentally shown to produce the desired reflected field phase while minimizing absorption. Impedance tube tests of individual unit cells and measurements of the scattered field from a two-dimensional diffuser in an anechoic chamber demonstrated comparable performance between the coiled-space AMS design and a conventional quadratic residue diffuser (QRD). Spatiotemporal modulation of surface acoustic admittance in a wave-like manner was investigated theoretically and experimentally to improve the diffusivity of acoustic scattering from a reflective surface with a specified geometry. A semi-analytical model of the scattered sound field from spatiotemporally modulated diffuser surface was developed using Fourier series expansion of diffraction modes that includes harmonics of the admittance modulation frequency. The presence of modulation harmonics scatters sound in additional directions compared to those of the unmodulated diffuser, thereby improving diffusivity of the scattered sound field. The polar responses of the scattered field predicted by the semi-analytical model were verified by comparison with a transient numerical simulation using the finite element method (FEM). Performance improvements were experimentally verified by modifying the termination of the conventional QRD design through the addition of a compliant piezoelectric bender disk terminated with a negative capacitance shunting circuit. The electrical termination of the piezoelectric disk is then switched between open-circuit and negative capacitance circuit conditions using a computer-controlled solid-state relay switch to create a square-wave modulation function of the termination impedance. Modulation harmonics in the reflected field were observed using the impedance tube tests. Furthermore, measurements of a spatiotemporally modulated QRD in an anechoic environment lead to the observation of modulation harmonics with angle-dependent magnitudes that are functions of the modulation directions in good agreement with predictions of the semi-analytical model. These measurement results demonstrate the effectiveness of the spatiotemporal modulation of the surface acoustic admittance in both time and space
