Book excerpt: A series of experiments were conducted to optimize progesterone concentrations during the Ovsynch protocol and improve fertility in lactating dairy cows during first TAI (Chapter I and II) and during resynchronization (Chapter IV). Overall, results showed that medium range (0.5 to 4 ng/mL) P4 at G1, high (> 1 ng/mL) at the PGF, and low ( 0.4 ng/mL) at G2 were associated with greater P/AI at first service as well as during resynchronization. The use of different presynchronization schemes before initiation of the Ovsynch protocol had differential effects on the percentage of cows initiating the Ovsynch protocol on D7 of the estrous cycle, which was then reflected in the final P/AI of each synchronization program. Book excerpt: Lactating dairy cows from 2 Kansas farms were used to determine the effectiveness of exogenous progesterone in the form of an intravaginal insert (controlled internal drug release; CIDR) in conjunction with an ovulation-synchronization protocol. Cows were enrolled in a Presynch + Ovsynch protocol after parturition, where they received 2 injections of PGF[subscript]2[alpha], 14 d apart (Presynch) beginning between 30 and 36 DIM. Cows (n = 155) detected in estrus after the second PGF[subscript]2[alpha] injection of Presynch were inseminated (early AI). Remaining cows were assigned randomly to be treated with the Cosynch-72 protocol (GnRH 12 d after last Presynch PGF[subscript]2[alpha] injection, PGF[subscript]2[alpha] 7 d after GnRH, and timed AI + GnRH injection 72 h later) and served as controls (n = 159), or to be treated with the Cosynch-72 protocol and receive a progesterone insert (Ovsynch + CIDR; n = 175) for 7 d between GnRH and PGF[subscript]2[alpha]. Blood was collected at d -22 and -10 (relative to TAI at d 0) to determine cycling status based on progesterone concentrations and again at d 11 post AI to determine luteal competency. Treated cows were assigned body condition scores (BCS) on d -22 and -10. Pregnancy status was confirmed by palpation of the uterus per rectum and its contents on d 38 post-timed AI and verified again 4 wk later. Treatment with the progesterone insert increased timed AI pregnancies per AI in Cosynch- 72 + CIDR-treated cows when compared with controls (38 vs. 24%), but did not differ from early AI cows (38%). Pregnancy loss was numerically less in progesterone-treated cows than in controls (4.4 vs. 11.8%). Our study shows that increased pregnancies per AI can be achieved by the use of a progesterone insert in a reduced population of cows not yet inseminated, but treated with a progesterone insert.

An additional objective was to determine mechanisms of induced infusion with. T. pyogenes on length of the estrous cycle. Chapter 3 describes effects of 1 (1TAI) or 3 timed AI (3TAI) before natural service in lactating dairy cows not detected in estrus on pregnancy, and revealed that 3TAI had greater hazard of pregnancy and 21-day cycle pregnancy rate than 1TAI. Chapter 4 evaluated the effects of the first gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection of the 5-d timed AI program on ovarian responses and pregnancy per AI (P/AI) and the effect of timing of the final GnRH to induce ovulation relative to AI on P/AI in dairy heifers. Use of GnRH on the 1st day of the 5-d timed AI program resulted in low ovulation and no improvement in P/AI when a single prostaglandin (PG) F2 ... injection on d 5 was used. Extending proestrus by delaying the final GnRH from 56 to 72 h concurrent with AI benefited P/AI of heifers not in estrus at AI.

Book excerpt: Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program: A Way Forward reviews the science that underpins the Bureau of Land Management's oversight of free-ranging horses and burros on federal public lands in the western United States, concluding that constructive changes could be implemented. The Wild Horse and Burro Program has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate the population sizes of horses and burros, to model the effects of management actions on the animals, or to assess the availability and use of forage on rangelands. Evidence suggests that horse populations are growing by 15 to 20 percent each year, a level that is unsustainable for maintaining healthy horse populations as well as healthy ecosystems. Promising fertility-control methods are available to help limit this population growth, however. In addition, science-based methods exist for improving population estimates, predicting the effects of management practices in order to maintain genetically diverse, healthy populations, and estimating the productivity of rangelands. Greater transparency in how science-based methods are used to inform management decisions may help increase public confidence in the Wild Horse and Burro Program.
