Book excerpt: This monograph forms an interdisciplinary study in atomic, molecular, and quantum information (QI) science. Here a reader will find that applications of the tools developed in QI provide new physical insights into electron optics as well as properties of atoms & molecules which, in turn, are useful in studying QI both at fundamental and applied levels. In particular, this book investigates entanglement properties of flying electronic qubits generated in some of the well known processes capable of taking place in an atom or a molecule following the absorption of a photon. Here, one can generate Coulombic or fine-structure entanglement of electronic qubits. The properties of these entanglements differ not only from each other, but also from those when spin of an inner-shell photoelectron is entangled with the polarization of the subsequent fluorescence. Spins of an outer-shell electron and of a residual photoion can have free or bound entanglement in a laboratory.

After discussing the frontiers of quantum networking research and building a DLCZ-type quantum memory with cold atomic ensemble, the author develops the ring cavity enhanced quantum memory and demonstrates a filter-free quantum memory, which significantly improves the photon-atom entanglement. The author then realizes for the first time the GHZ-type entanglement of three separate quantum memories, a building block of 2D quantum repeaters and quantum networks. The author also combines quantum memories and time-resolved measurements, and reports the first multiple interference of three single photons with different colors. The book is of good reference value for graduate students, researchers, and technical personnel in quantum information sciences.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the findings and achievements in the major research plan “Detection and Interaction of Single Quantum States” funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The 8-year plan started in 2011 and consisted of 107 projects conducted by Chinese universities and research institutes. The book covers the plan's research background, achievements, and follow-up prospects. The plan aimed to tackle one of the major challenges for researchers worldwide—to establish precise detection and control of single quantum states in time, space, energy, and momentum. The plan integrated precise detection means with the ultrahigh resolution of time, space, and energy, under extreme conditions such as ultrahigh vacuum, ultralow temperature, high magnetic field, and ultrahigh pressure, using interdisciplinary research methods in physics, chemistry, informatics, and materials science. The book focuses on the exploration of new phenomena, theories, and concepts of single quantum states, describes new techniques and methods of single quantum states, and presents the purification and construction of single-quantum-state systems. It is a concise and valuable source of information for researchers in quantum science and graduate students interested in the research field.

Book excerpt: Quantum networks enable the long-distance communication of quantum states through teleportation, but require, in advance, the robust distribution of entanglement between relevant parties. Engineering these networks requires quantum interconnects, which convert quantum states in one physical system to those of another reversibly, and with high fidelity. In this thesis, we describe implementations of long-distance quantum communication networks using polarization entanglement and atomic ensembles. We concisely describe the interactions of a quantum optical field with a heralding atomic ensemble, accounting for multiple-pair events at entanglement generation, as well as finite transmission and photodetection efficiencies under number-resolving and non-resolving photodetection schemes. Using these results, we perform a detailed quantitative performance analysis of quantum networks that distribute and swap entanglement.

Book excerpt: In addition, we generalize the theory of dark-state polaritons in ensembles of three level Λ atoms to account for the nuclear spin degeneracy of alkali atoms. This generalized theory provides a description of the first demonstration of single photon storage and retrieval from atomic ensembles. Additionally, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, we predict the occurrence of collapses and revivals of the photon retrieval efficiency as a function of storage time within the ensemble. These predictions are in very good agreement with subsequent experimental observations. We also exploit the ability of photon storage to entangle remote atomic qubits.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we show how an optical microcavity setup can create multiparticle entanglement in an ensemble of neutral atoms by means of quantum Zeno dynamics (QZD).Our setup combines an atom chip with a fibre Fabry-Perot (FFP) resonator and allows us to load an ensemble of Rb87 atoms into a single node of an intracavity dipole trap, coupling the atoms strongly and identically to the cavity light field which enables us to perform a quantum non-destructive measurement of their collective state. We realise QZD by modifying the dynamics of the collective state (encoded in atomic hyperfine states addressed with MW radiation) by means of frequent cavity measurements at optical frequency. This QZD is shown to create multiparticle entanglement in a fast and deterministic scheme. To analyse the created states, we reconstruct the symmetric part of the atomic density matrix from 2d measurements of the ensemble's Husimi Q-distribution. We give a time-resolved account of the creation of states with at least 3-11 entangled atoms and fidelity of up to 0.37 with respect to a W state of 36 atoms. Studying the influence of measurement strength and experimental imperfections, we show that our experiments are well described by simple models with no free parameters. This thesis also presents work towards improved FFP cavities. We discuss the problem of frequency splitting of polarisation eigenmodes in cavities made from two fibres microfabricated with a CO2 laser. We show that this effect depends on the symmetry of the microfabricated structures and demonstrate that it can be controlled both at the level of fabrication and when assembling a cavity.

Quantum computers for special purposes like quantum simulators are already within reach. The physics of ultracold atoms, ions and molecules offer unprecedented possibilities of control of quantum many body systems and novel possibilities of applications to quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Particularly fascinating is the possibility of using ultracold atoms in lattices to simulate condensed matter or even high energy physics. This book provides a complete and comprehensive overview of ultracold lattice gases as quantum simulators. It opens up an interdisciplinary field involving atomic, molecular and optical physics, quantum optics, quantum information, condensed matter and high energy physics. The book includes some introductory chapters on basic concepts and methods, and then focuses on the physics of spinor, dipolar, disordered, and frustrated lattice gases. It reviews in detail the physics of artificial lattice gauge fields with ultracold gases. The last part of the book covers simulators of quantum computers. After a brief course in quantum information theory, the implementations of quantum computation with ultracold gases are discussed, as well as our current understanding of condensed matter from a quantum information perspective.

Book excerpt: Long-term storage of quantum information has diverse applications in quantum information science. This work presents an experimental realization of quantum memories with lifetimes greater then 0.1 s. The memories are based on cold rubidium atoms confined in one-dimensional optical lattices. First realization of lattice-based quantum memory and entanglement between a light field and a spin wave is presented in Chapter II. Chapter III describes two different methods (two-photon and magnetic) of compensation for inhomogeneous differential light shifts between the memory levels due to optical trapping potentials, and demonstration of entanglement between a telecom-band light field and a light-shift compensated memory qubit. Highly excited Rydberg atoms present a unique platform for study of strongly correlated systems and quantum information, because of their enormous dipole moments and consequent strong, long-range interactions. In the experiment described in Chapter IV single collective Rydberg excitations are created in a cold atomic gas. After a variable storage period the excitations are converted into light. As the principal quantum number n of the Rydberg level is increased beyond ~ 70, no more than a single excitation is retrieved from the entire mesoscopic ensemble of atoms. In Chapter V, by spatially selective conversion of the spin wave into a light field, we demonstrate that Rydberg-level interactions create long-range correlations of collective atomic excitations. These results hold promise for studies of dynamics and disorder in many-body systems with tunable interactions and for scalable quantum information networks. Chapter VI presents initial observations of coherent many-body Rabi oscillations between the ground level and a Rydberg level using several hundred cold rubidium atoms. The strongly pronounced oscillations indicate a nearly complete excitation blockade of the entire mesoscopic ensemble by a single excited atom.

Introducing entanglement among the constituent atoms offers a route to enhancing the precision of these measurements. One proposed approach to generating the requisite entanglement relies on the off-resonant optical coupling of one ground state to a highly excited electronic state. This technique, known as Rydberg dressing, enables local and dynamical control of interactions between neutral atoms. In this thesis, I present the engineering of Rydberg-dressed interactions by single-photon coupling to nP states in a cesium atomic clock. Optimizing the coherence of these many-body interactions is a major challenge; in order to understand and minimize dissipation mechanisms, I show sensitive measurements of percent-level noise processes, comparable to the projection noise of our atomic ensembles. Finally, I present the creation of a squeezed spin state by local interactions that achieves a factor of 0.79(6) reduction in phase variance below the standard quantum limit. The results of this thesis seek to inform the design of future experiments that will use coherent Rydberg-dressed interactions for a wider range of applications in quantum sensing and simulation.

Given that one of the main challenges in building the quantum network is the limited entanglement distribution distance, this book presents some state-of-the-art experiments in tackling this challenge and, for the first time, establishes entanglement between quantum memories via metropolitan-scale fiber transmission. This achievement is accomplished by cooperating high-efficiency cold quantum memories, low-loss quantum frequency conversion modules, and long-fiber phase-locking techniques. In the book, the scheme design, experimental setup, data analyses, and numerous technical details are given. Therefore, it suits a broad readership that includes all students, researchers, and technicians who work in quantum information sciences.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates an entangled light source with an in-built quantum memory based on the protocol of rephased amplified spontaneous emission (RASE). RASE has promising applications as a building-block of a quantum repeater: a device essential for extending the range of current quantum communication links. To be useful RASE must be able to produce high fidelity non-classical light with high efficiency, and be able to store multimode entanglement for long times. This thesis characterises the RASE source and determines to what degree these requirements can be met. The experimental RASE demonstration was conducted in a rare-earth ion doped crystal. Rare-earth ions provide a particularly promising platform for developing quantum technologies as they possess long coherence times on both the optical and hyperfine transitions. In the RASE protocol an inverted ensemble of two-level atoms amplifies the vacuum fluctuations resulting in amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). This results in entanglement between the output optical field and the collective modes of the amplifying ensemble. The collective atomic state dephases due to the inhomogeneous broadening of the ensemble but this can be rephased using photon echo techniques. When the ensemble rephases, a second optical field, the rephased amplified spontaneous emission (RASE), is emitted and is entangled with the ASE. In this thesis, a modified four-level rephasing scheme is used that allows the single photon signals to be spectrally resolved from any coherent background emission associated with the bright driving fields. In addition, four-level RASE incorporates storage on the long-lived hyperfine ground states. Two experiments are described in this thesis. First, a free-space four-level RASE demonstration using continuous-variable detection. In this experiment the different sources of noise were characterised and low noise operation was shown to be possible. Entanglement of the ASE and RASE was confirmed by violating the inseparability criterion with 98.6% confidence. In addition, entanglement was demonstrated after storage of the collective atomic state on the spin states and RASE was shown to be temporally multimode, with almost perfect distinguishability between two temporal modes demonstrated. The degree of entanglement between the ASE and RASE was limited by the rephasing efficiency, which saturated at 3%. It was determined that distortion of the rephasing pulses as they propagate through the optically thick ensemble was the probable cause of the low efficiency. The second experiment was a preliminary cavity-enhanced RASE demonstration. Theoretically perfect rephasing efficiency can be obtained by placing the crystal in an impedance-matched optical cavity. The initial cavity design showed encouraging evidence of an enhancement in the rephasing efficiency, with a 4-fold improvement over the free-space experiment. Improvements to the cavity design were proposed to allow a further increase in the rephasing efficiency of RASE. In summary, this thesis provides an extensive characterisation of an entangled light source with an in-built quantum memory based on rephasing spontaneous emission from an ensemble of ions. Importantly, the RASE scheme allows generation and storage of entanglement in a single protocol, which holds great promise for the development of integrated quantum networks.

Book excerpt: Towards Solid-State Quantum Repeaters: Ultrafast, Coherent Optical Control and Spin-Photon Entanglement in Charged InAs Quantum Dots summarizes several state-of-the-art coherent spin manipulation experiments in III-V quantum dots. Both high-fidelity optical manipulation, decoherence due to nuclear spins and the spin coherence extraction are discussed, as is the generation of entanglement between a single spin qubit and a photonic qubit. The experimental results are analyzed and discussed in the context of future quantum technologies, such as quantum repeaters. Single spins in optically active semiconductor host materials have emerged as leading candidates for quantum information processing (QIP). The quantum nature of the spin allows for encoding of stationary, memory quantum bits (qubits), and the relatively weak interaction with the host material preserves the spin coherence. On the other hand, optically active host materials permit direct interfacing with light, which can be used for all-optical qubit manipulation, and for efficiently mapping matter qubits into photonic qubits that are suited for long-distance quantum communication.
