Book Synopsis Tight and Taut Submanifolds by : Nicolaas Hendrik Kuiper
Download or read book Tight and Taut Submanifolds written by Nicolaas Hendrik Kuiper and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-13 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this book contains six in-depth articles on various aspects of the field of tight and taut submanifolds and concludes with an extensive bibliography of the entire field. The book is dedicated to the memory of Nicolaas H. Kuiper; the first paper is an unfinished but insightful survey of the field of tight immersions and maps written by Kuiper himself. Other papers by leading researchers in the field treat topics such as the smooth and polyhedral portions of the theory of tight immersions, taut, Dupin and isoparametric submanifolds of Euclidean space, taut submanifolds of arbitrary complete Riemannian manifolds, and real hypersurfaces in complex space forms with special curvature properties. Taken together these articles provide a comprehensive survey of the field and point toward several directions for future research.
Book Synopsis Foundational Essays on Topological Manifolds, Smoothings, and Triangulations. (AM-88), Volume 88 by : Robion C. Kirby
Download or read book Foundational Essays on Topological Manifolds, Smoothings, and Triangulations. (AM-88), Volume 88 written by Robion C. Kirby and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Poincaré's time, topologists have been most concerned with three species of manifold. The most primitive of these--the TOP manifolds--remained rather mysterious until 1968, when Kirby discovered his now famous torus unfurling device. A period of rapid progress with TOP manifolds ensued, including, in 1969, Siebenmann's refutation of the Hauptvermutung and the Triangulation Conjecture. Here is the first connected account of Kirby's and Siebenmann's basic research in this area. The five sections of this book are introduced by three articles by the authors that initially appeared between 1968 and 1970. Appendices provide a full discussion of the classification of homotopy tori, including Casson's unpublished work and a consideration of periodicity in topological surgery.

Book Synopsis Lectures on Geometry by : Edward Witten
Download or read book Lectures on Geometry written by Edward Witten and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of papers based on lectures delivered by distinguished mathematicians at Clay Mathematics Institute events over the past few years. It is intended to be the first in an occasional series of volumes of CMI lectures. Although not explicitly linked, the topics in this inaugural volume have a common flavour and a common appeal to all who are interested in recent developments in geometry. They are intended to be accessible to all who work in this general area, regardless of their own particular research interests.

Book Synopsis Differential Geometry by : Jes£s A. Alvarez L¢pez
Download or read book Differential Geometry written by Jes£s A. Alvarez L¢pez and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains research and expository papers on recent advances in foliations and Riemannian geometry. Some of the topics covered in this volume include: topology, geometry, dynamics and analysis of foliations, curvature, submanifold theory, Lie groups and harmonic maps.Among the contributions, readers may find an extensive survey on characteristic classes of Riemannian foliations offering also new results, an article showing the uniform simplicity of certain diffeomorphism groups, an exposition of convergences of contact structures to foliations from the point of view of Thurston's and Thurston?Bennequin's inequalities, a discussion about Fatou?Julia decompositions for foliations and a description of singular Riemannian foliations on spaces without conjugate points.Papers on submanifold theory focus on the existence of graphs with prescribed mean curvature and mean curvature flow for spacelike graphs, isometric and conformal deformations and detailed surveys on totally geodesic submanifolds in symmetric spaces, cohomogeneity one actions on hyperbolic spaces and rigidity of geodesic spheres in space forms. Geometric realizability of curvature tensors and curvature operators are also treated in this volume with special attention to the affine and the pseudo-Riemannian settings. Also, some contributions on biharmonic maps and submanifolds enrich the scope of this volume in providing an overview of different topics of current interest in differential geometry.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Homotopy Theory by : Haynes Miller
Download or read book Handbook of Homotopy Theory written by Haynes Miller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Homotopy Theory provides a panoramic view of an active area in mathematics that is currently seeing dramatic solutions to long-standing open problems, and is proving itself of increasing importance across many other mathematical disciplines. The origins of the subject date back to work of Henri Poincaré and Heinz Hopf in the early 20th century, but it has seen enormous progress in the 21st century. A highlight of this volume is an introduction to and diverse applications of the newly established foundational theory of ¥ -categories. The coverage is vast, ranging from axiomatic to applied, from foundational to computational, and includes surveys of applications both geometric and algebraic. The contributors are among the most active and creative researchers in the field. The 22 chapters by 31 contributors are designed to address novices, as well as established mathematicians, interested in learning the state of the art in this field, whose methods are of increasing importance in many other areas.

Download or read book History of Topology written by I.M. James and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-08-24 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology, for many years, has been one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Although its origins may be traced back several hundred years, it was Poincaré who "gave topology wings" in a classic series of articles published around the turn of the century. While the earlier history, sometimes called the prehistory, is also considered, this volume is mainly concerned with the more recent history of topology, from Poincaré onwards. As will be seen from the list of contents the articles cover a wide range of topics. Some are more technical than others, but the reader without a great deal of technical knowledge should still find most of the articles accessible. Some are written by professional historians of mathematics, others by historically-minded mathematicians, who tend to have a different viewpoint.
