Book excerpt: he popular and often misunderstood Mandukya Upanishad is considered the "king" of the Upanishads because its simple, elegant logic in the hands of an accomplished teacher removes the belief that the Self is a finite entity, revealing its limitless fullness. The famous commentaries of Gaudapada, a great sage of the Vedantic sampradaya, presents a radical Creation teaching, non-origination. Creation teachings are important because the Upanishads unequivocally state that reality is non-dual consciousness/existence. If it is, then how can we explain the presence of duality, which we continually experience?

This insistence upon immediate perception rather than abstract reasoning is what distinguishes the Indian philosophy of religion from philosophy as Western nations know it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common misconception that a spiritual seeker must have faith in a god or divine entity to achieve self-realization. When one understands the teachings of the Upanishads, enlightenment is possible here and now without the word "God." The Mandukya Upanishad is for those students who want to practice spirituality without resorting to unnecessary abstract concepts. The Mandukya Upanishad provides a comprehensive map for the inward journey that shows the individual the way from the mundane to the eternal. It describes this state as the ultimate reality and the goal of human existence. When one understands the teachings of the Upanishads, then one realizes that life itself is a sort of worship that can shine on the altar of infinity. --From Chapter 1, "Awakening"

Book excerpt: Gaudapada was one of the world’s greatest philosophers in seventh-century India. He invokes the mystical symbol ‘AUM’ (pronounced as ‘ohm’) pointing to the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming and deep sleep) and the nature of reality itself. In the text on which this book is based, he writes that the waker, dreamer and deep-sleeper are like the roles that an actor plays at various times. All three states are the result of ignorance and error. Who we really are is the fourth aspect – the actor himself. If you see or feel a ‘thing’, then that ‘thing’ is not ‘real.’ So the waking world is no more real than the dream. ‘You’ have never been born. Nothing has ever been created. Causality is a myth. Discover your true nature to be Existence-Consciousness, without limitations, undivided and infinite, prior to time and space. Incredible? Read...and be convinced by the irrefutable logic of Gaudapada.

Book excerpt: Not being satisfied with the interpretation offered by Sankara and his followers, or some other teachers the author has attempted in the following pages to present to the readers his own interpretation of the work as he has understood it. But in no way does he claim that his interpretation is the interpretation, i.e., the interpretation intended by Gaudapada himself. In the present volume the author has given a new edition of the text of the Agamasastra based on a number of MSS and different editions, followed by an English translation. After this comes his annotation. At the end there are Appendixes including the text and English translation of the Mandukya Upanisad, VAriants of the MSS used for the edition of the text of the Agamasastra, and different indexes.

Download or read book Mandukya Karika Of Gaudapada written by Shraddhesh Chaturvedi and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let us try to see absolute reality from the perspective of space and time. If an entity does not last long, we do not value it. This is true of our dreams. Since the experiences of a waking state last longer, it has more credibility for us. So, we can say that longevity is a measure of reality. Likewise, if something occupies a limited space, it can affect a limited space and has limited significance. Reality should have far-reaching significance. Essentially, the reality is eternal and all-pervading. In Vedanta, reality does not change with space and time. While interpreting the Mandukya Upanishad, Gaudapada lays down the fundamental principles of non-dual philosophy. Starting with the example of dreams, he shows that our experiences in a waking state are also not real. And, if these experiences are not real, we have to discard them in our search for reality. As one cannot discard himself, we know reality if we remove all obstructions. Later, Shankara used this groundwork in his timeless commentaries.
Download or read book Gaudapada written by Richard H Jones and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gaudapada-karikas is the earliest extant Advaita Vedanta text. It is only explicitly Advaita text deemed worth saving from before Shankara's time. Its philosophical doctrines makes it worthy of study in its own right and sets the stage for Shankara's slightly different Advaita. The text is presented here in a plain English translation with notes. Also included are an essay on early Vedanta, who the author(s) of this text may be, and the influence of Buddhism on the text (especially Nagarjuna's Madhyamaka tradition); an account of the basic doctrines; and a philosophical critique of those doctrines. This books makes the claim intelligible that all is consciousness, one, and unchanging and thereby removes much of the shock of Gaudapada's Advaita Vedanta. But it also raises problems with the plausibility of the claim.
