Book excerpt: First published in 1989. As a young man growing up near Basel, Jung was fascinated and disturbed by tales of Nietzsche's brilliance, eccentricity, and eventual decline into permanent psychosis. These volumes, the transcript of a previously unpublished private seminar, reveal the fruits of his initial curiosity: Nietzsche's works, which he read as a student at the University of Basel, had moved him profoundly and had a life-long influence on his thought. During the sessions the mature Jung spoke informally to members of his inner circle about a thinker whose works had not only overwhelmed him with the depth of their understanding of human nature but also provided the philosophical sources of many of his own psychological and metapsychological ideas. Above all, he demonstrated how the remarkable book Thus Spake Zarathustra illustrates both Nietzsche's genius and his neurotic and prepsychotic tendencies. Since there was at that time no thought of the seminar notes being published, Jung felt free to joke, to lash out at people and events that irritated or angered him, and to comment unreservedly on political, economic, and other public conerns of the time. This seminar and others, including the one recorded in Dream Analysis, were given in English in Zurich during the 1920s and 1930s.

Book excerpt: Nietzsche's infamous work Thus Spake Zarathustra is filled with a strange sense of religiosity that seems to run counter to the philosopher's usual polemics against religious faith. For some scholars, this book marks little but a mental decline in the great philosopher; for C. G. Jung, Zarathustra was an invaluable demonstration of the unconscious at work, one that illuminated both Nietzsche's psychology and spirituality and that of the modern world in general. The original two-volume edition of Jung's lively seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra has been an important source for specialists in depth psychology. This new abridged paperback edition allows interested readers to participate with Jung as he probes the underlying meaning of Nietzsche's great work.

Book excerpt: Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison gives us a way of understanding our depression which matches our experience and which enables us to take charge of our life and change it. Dorothy Rowe shows us that depression is not an illness or a mental disorder but a defence against pain and fear, which we can use whenever we suffer a disaster and discover that our life is not what we thought it was. Depression is an unwanted consequence of how we see ourselves and the world. By understanding how we have interpreted events in our life we can choose to change our interpretations and thus create for ourselves a happier, more fulfilling life. Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison is for depressed people, their family and friends, and for all professionals and non-professionals who work with depressed people.

Adopting a twofold approach, the book firstly presents the various technologies as such, before going on to cover the materials class by class, analyzing how the different imaging methods can be successfully applied. It covers the latest developments in techniques, such as in-situ TEM, 3D imaging in TEM and SEM, as well as a broad range of material types, including metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, minerals, quasicrystals, amorphous solids, among others. The volumes are divided between methods and applications, making this both a reliable reference and handbook for chemists, physicists, biologists, materials scientists and engineers, as well as graduate students and their lecturers.

Book excerpt: Costis Davaras is not the first scholar to compare the Bronze Age cultures of Crete and India. Prompted by an invitation to attend the World Archaeological Congress in New Delhi in 1994, he takes an eclectic look at parallels and affinities' between the two cultures, especially with regard to art and religion. With no physical or factual evidence that Cretans, or Cretan objects, ever reached this far into Asia, Davaras' suggestions are purely hypothetical and at best speculative, but they may achieve some heightened understanding of aspects of either culture. The fact that these are two cultures at the geographical extremes of the same Oriental cultural continuum' may not convince everyone that they remain worthy of comparison.

Book excerpt: In his newest coloring book for adults, Tim Jeffs once again captures the striking patterns and textures of the animal kingdom with extraordinary detail. You will love the pencil, pen, and ink prints featuring animals from a wide range of species-from hornbills to narwhals, cicadas to seadragons. Each design begins with careful research into the appearance, conservation status (many Threatened or Endangered), habitat, and habits of each animal, painstakingly rep- resenting each scale, feather, and strand of fur. By incorporating stylized designs within the framework of the animal's own pattern, Jeffs allows himself to bring his own artistic flair to that of Mother Nature's-a delightful collaboration that encourages you to take these pieces and make them your own. With high-quality paper, lay-flat binding, and a sturdy but flexible hardcover, Intricate Ink: Animals in Detail, Volume 5 lets you create unique, keepsake works of art.For Jeffs, an award-winning artist since high school and a Creative Director in New York for over thirty years, this is a far cry from his days as a guitarist with White Zombie (yep, of heavy metal fame)-but maybe not as far as you'd think. The artist's internet followers respond to his drawings with the fervor of rock fans. His highly detailed illustra- tions have garnered worldwide attention as they raise awareness of and connection with the animal kingdom.
