Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Face of Manchuria, Korea,& Russian Turkestan Less than three years ago I made a journey with a friend, Miss MacDougall, across the Chinese Empire from north-east to south-west, and while my interests in the changes going on there was intensified, a profound anxiety took possession of my mind as to the effect these changes would produce in the national life. The European and other Powers who had wrangled over the possibility of commercial and political advantages to be obtained from the Chinese Government (after the Boxer troubles) have withdrawn to a certain extent, but like snarling dogs dragged from their prey, they still keep covetous eyes upon it, and both Russia and Japan continue steadily but silently to strengthen their hold upon its borders. These borders are Manchuria and Korea, and it is in this direction that fresh developments must be expected. I read all the available literature bearing on the subject, but so rapidly had the changes occurred that books were already out of date, and they failed to make me see the country as it now is. As an instance of this, let me quote Whigham's (correspondent to the Morning Post) "Manchuria and Korea," published in 1904. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial Chosen and Manchuria We have compiled this album to commemorate the decennial of our establishment which falls on the 29th of October of this year. On this date, ten years ago, our institution was established as the central bank of Chosen, when the conditions in the country were very different from what they are now. This period of ten years has seen a great change in the conditions of both country and Bank. The progress of the one has matched well the progress of the other, and indeed the progress of both has been so closely allied that one can hardly understand the progress of the Bank of Chosen unless aided by some knowledge of the progress of the country itself, and this, we believe, constitutes ample reason for publishing on this memorable occasion in the history of the Bank a book of this sort, the principal purpose of which is to show the progress of the country made in recent years. Manchuria was added to our field of business rather late in this period of ten years, yet the progress of our business there has been so rapid that the land has now more of our branches than Chosen itself. Moreover, so far as the Kwantung Province and the South Manchuria Railway Zone are concerned, we enjoy there a position exactly the same as we enjoy in Chosen - that of the central bank - and naturally what we have said of Chosen holds true of Manchuria. Hence we have ample reason for including that country, too, in this album. Other fields of the Bank have just been touched upon as supplementary, with the exception of Japan which is already well known to the world at large. In compiling this album our first endeavour was to procure good pictures with enough variety in them to represent every phase of social and economic progress, and the next, to link together these pictures with words, so that pictures and words would help each other in giving as true an idea as possible about the countries concerned. We take this opportunity of wishing health and prosperity to our friends and customers to whom this album is addressed with the compliments of the season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outposts of Asia In writing this book of a journey through Manchuria, Korea and Japan, it is partly a tribute to the hospitality of the Imperial Railway through whose kindness I made the picturesque tour on the track of the fighting line across coun tries ou which so much attention has been focused in these last years, partly to fulfill a pledge made to the Manila Merchants Association, to write in a book of travel through Russia a chapter on Manila, which chapter is the last in the volume. Among the few treasures which the traveler feels he must carry away from that land of art - Japan - the writer chose a kakemono representing the grim old fighter Ieyasu dressed in his stitf brocade of choice pattern which the elegance of his life demanded. He sits not on horse, nor in palanquin, but at ease and in reflective mood in his home, his queer head-dress arching out from his falcon-like head, holding in one hand a sword even in this hour of leisure, ready to spring upon his coun try's foes, in the other hand a roll of paper, for he was like the great Charlemagne, a man of letters, as well as of battles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Korea for Christ On the eastern coast of Asia lies one of the most fascinating countries of the Far East. To the north is Manchuria; to the east Japan; to the south and west the vast tracts of China. In the centre are the 80,000 square miles that comprise the country of Korea. The scenery of this land is beautiful; the low houses with their thatched or tiled roofs are picturesque; the people intellectual; and the manners and customs are similar in many respects to those of Palestine in the days of Christ. The history of the land goes back beyond the time of King David. In 1122 B. C. a famous Korean monarch, named Kicha, reigned in Pyeng Yang. During the succeeding thirty centuries the nation remained in largely the same condition of civilization; self-satisfied, indolent, isolated. It has been the Hermit Land of the East; proud of its antiquity, hiding itself from the rest of the world behind impassable barriers. Twenty-five years ago, a wonderful change occurred. God seemed to call this mysterious land into the forefront of the world's activity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolic Church as Reproduced in Korea Korea as a country might very well be compared to J udea of old. I do not know that the comparison has ever been made before but it seems to me that there are several respects in which the comparison is a very apt one. First, geographically. J udea was surrounded on three sides by three very powerful nations, Syria. On the north, Assyria or Babylonia on the east and Egypt on the south. And these three nations in their warfare one with the other often fought their battles on J udean soil. So J udea was very much of a buffer state in its relation to these mighty surround ing nations. Now look at Korea. On the east is that mighty, modern nation of Japan which has so recently succeeded in swallowing up Korea; on the west is China and on the north is Russia. And it is not necessary for me to stop here to remind you how these nations have been spilling each other's blood upon Korean soil. During the J apan China war of 1895 the principal field of action was in Korea, in and around the city of Pyeng Yang where we live. Again in the recent war between Japan and Russia the opening naval battle was fought in Chemulpo harbor and the first land gun of the war was fired within hearing distance of our home when the Japanese patrolling the city wall fired on the Russian scouts who came down from the north to spy out the country. Several battles were later fought on Korean soil as the first Japanese army under Gen. Kuroki passed through our city on his way north until he drove the Russians acrossthe Yalu, from which time the principal theatre of action was transferred to the plains of Manchuria. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Uttermost East: Being an Account of Investigations Among the Natives and Russian Convicts of the Island of Sakhalin, With Notes of Travel in Korea, Siberia, and Manchuria MANY books on Siberia have appeared during the last two decades, most of which fall into one of two categories; the earlier, into what we may label "exile literature," and the later, "Siberian railway sketches." The present work belongs in part to both of these classes, but deals chiefly with a portion of Siberia far beyond the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway - the little-known island of Sakhalin. Such a terra incognita has Sakhalin been in the history of exploration, that until the year 1849 it was believed to be a peninsula even by the Russians; and six years later, in 1855, an English naval commander was outwitted owing to the prevailing ignorance of its insularity. It is therefore not surprising that, even as late as this twentieth century, I should have been the first English traveller to explore the northern interior. The sources of our knowledge of Sakhalin, even in Russian, are few and in English, if little has been heard of the convicts there, nothing has been written about the Gilyak and Orochon natives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Coasts of Cathay and Cipango Forty Years Ago: A Record of Surveying Service in the China Yellow and Japan Seas and on the Seaboard of Korea and Manchuria As subsidiary to this history of the Acin'ou's voyage, it may perhaps interest landsmen to hear what a civilian officer, r.n., like myself has to say about life in the navy when I was afloat. Admirals and their brother officers, in regular descent down the whole gamut of the executive, have been giving their views in print, their opening pages, adorned with photographs of figure-heads resplendent with stars and medals; so the writer is but conforming to the custom of the service and following their evolutions by introducing his photograph, with the implements of his warfare against this ignorance of the Coast of Tartary. The illustrations, with but few exceptions, are by the facile and truthful brush of my accomplished brother officer, messmate, and dear friend, Frederic Le Breton Bedwell, himself a civilian officer, r.n., and also on the surveying staff of the Aela'on. To him I am greatly indebted for placing his sketches at my disposal. His photograph is side by Side with mine at the end of the volume.
