Book excerpt: The ongoing revolution in electronic information technology raises critical questions about our right to privacy. As more personal information is gathered and stored at breathtaking speed, corporate America is confronted with the ethical and practical issues of how to handle the information in its databases: how should it be safeguarded and who should have access to it? In Managing Privacy, Jeff Smith examines the policies of corporations such as insurance companies, banks, and credit card firms that regularly process medical, financial, and consumer data. According to Smith, many companies lack comprehensive policies regulating the access to and distribution of personal data, and where stated policies do exist, actual practices often conflict. Few organizations are willing to become leaders in the development of such policies, instead formulating privacy guidelines only after being pressured by consumers, the media, or legislators. Smith argues that as information technology advances, both corporations and society as a whole must modify their approaches to privacy protection, and he presents specific suggestions for developing such policies. Book excerpt: The book deals with the management of information systems security and privacy, based on a model that covers technological, organizational and legal views. This is the basis for a focused and methodologically structured approach that presents "the big picture" of information systems security and privacy, while targeting managers and technical profiles. The book addresses principles in the background, regardless of a particular technology or organization. It enables a reader to suit these principles to an organization's needs and to implement them accordingly by using explicit procedures from the book. Additionally, the content is aligned with relevant standards and the latest trends. Scientists from social and technical sciences are supposed to find a framework for further research in this broad area, characterized by a complex interplay between human factors and technical issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privacy is a burden for most organizations, the more complex and wider an organization is, the harder to manage and enforce privacy is. GDPR and other regulations on privacy impose strict constraints that must be coherently enforced, considering also privacy needs of organization and their users. Furthermore, organizations should allow their users to express their privacy needs easily, even when the process that manages users' data is complex and involves multiple organizations. Many research work consider the problem using simplistic examples, with solutions proposed that never actually touch pragmatic problems of real, large organizations, with thousands of users and terabytes of personal and sensitive data. This book faces the privacy management problem targeting actual large organizations, such as public administrations, including stakeholders in the process of definition of the solution and evaluating the results with its actual integration in four large organizations. The contribution of this book is twofold: a privacy platform that can be customized and used to manage privacy in large organizations; and the process for the design of such a platform, from a state-of-the-art survey on privacy regulations, through the definition of its requirements, its design and its architecture, until the evaluation of the platform.
