Der Einsatz kulturübergreifender Teams ist hierbei nicht nur eine Notwendigkeit zur Bündelung verteilten Wissens, sondern ist mit der Erwartung verbunden, dass die Heterogenität in den Arbeitsgruppen zu kreativeren und besseren Lösungsansätzen führt. Die Überlegenheit der komplementären Kooperation begründet sich auf der Nutzung eines erweiterten Ressourcenpools, dem Erlernen interkulturell erfolgreicher Verhaltensweisen, sowie der Zuweisung von Aufgaben und Rollen nach kulturspezifischen Stärken. Die Realität zeigt jedoch ein anderes Bild: In der praktischen Zusammenarbeit führen unterschiedliche, kulturbedingte Werthaltungen, Vorurteile gegenüber Menschen verschiedener Herkunft, sowie gegensätzliche Annahmen zur Arbeitsweise, häufig zu Missverständnissen, die in Effizienzverlusten resultieren und im schlechtesten Fall das Scheitern der interkulturellen Teamarbeit verursachen. Um das Potential kulturübergreifender Teams nutzen und mögliche Hindernisse überwinden zu können, ist die Teamentwicklung entscheidend. Ziel ist es, die interkulturelle Integration voranzutreiben und eine gleichberechtigte Beziehung zwischen allen Mitgliedern des Teams zu schaffen, auf deren Basis Synergien der Vielfalt effektiv genutzt werden können.
