Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing in Britain and Germany compares British and German managers' behaviour and views of their work, and seeks to explain the differences. Based on a two year comparative study by British and German research teams, the book challenges the universal view of management presented in so many management books, by showing how differently German middle managers think and act. These differences are then unravelled and traced back to their various roots: ranging from the particular (nature of the job, product or organisation) to the general (the society's institutions and values). Written by leading management experts from Britain and Germany, the book provides useful lessons and insights for practising managers and for those studying management everywhere.

Book excerpt: This book provides cutting edge research and knowledge and an academic study of the impact of globalisation in different areas affecting management and how management is responding. It gives a comprehensive analysis of what is actually happening and likely future trends. It is not just a focus on 'convergence' arguments, but integrates a broader view of still remaining regional and national differences in management and organisation. The book draws on new theoretical approaches in the field of international business, highlighting areas such as Anglo-German subsidiaries of MNCs, HRM practices and change management processes or employment relations in US-based MNCs in Europe and many other aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management has always been part of human organization, but it is only in the last two centuries or so that it has been the central driver of economic activity, as companies have moved from family firms to hugely complex, multinational corporations with many layers of management. The term management is commonly used in three ways: as a process or activity; as a structure in any organization; and as a group or class of people carrying out certain roles in an organization. This book is the first detailed account of the evolution of management in all three senses. The focus is mainly on the UK, but throughout the broader question of why corporate management structures developed so impressively in the USA, Germany and Japan is borne in mind, while arguably little progress was made in this regards in the UK. Equally the authors consider why, given that management is now so widely studied, so little careful research has been undertaken into the evolution of the practice and the profession of management. The book is divided into four sections. Part One provides An Introduction to Management History; Part Two, Management and Organization, explores the historical development through the 19th and 20th centuries; Part Three, Managers in Context, looks at the social and cultural context of management and managers; and Part Four considers three key functional areas, labour, marketing, and accounting and finance. This rich, detailed, and path-breaking book will be essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the evolution of management as we now understand it, whether academics, students or managers themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This text collects a set of specially commissioned chapters by British and German political scientists as well as experts in public administration and management, designed to present and grapple with the range of the subject in an accessible but sophisticated form. In doing so, the volume seeks to fill the gap perceived to have opened up between the conventional comparative government literature and the new public management literature. While the first part of the book explores the historical, political and cultural context of public sector reform, the second part deals more specifically with institutional developments and recent reform trends in the fields of social policy and social service delivery. The volume analyzes the degree of "convergence" or "divergence" between the two countries with regard to public sector change.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1980 but re-issued now with a new preface, this book looks at the German manager from a sociological viewpoint and explains why German management has been so successful and highlights the key factors in the training of the German manager and the attitudes and skills he develops in his work. The views and aspirations of German managers themselves are discussed in the light of the author's first-hand acquaintance with German industry. Throughout there is comparison with the UK, USA and other European countries. The manufacturing function is the subject of a special examination. It is argued that although German management has adopted some American practices the ethic is strictly German and an essential part of the German character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the culture and conduct of six small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in England and West Germany from 1945 to the late-1970s, drawing on numerous archives in Germany and Britain. This is the first book length study that examines the detailed histories of SMEs in a comparative, transnational manner. Emerging from this study is an evaluation of German and British varieties of capitalism in action, showing that they were not fixed or static, but rather have changed considerably as they evolved over time. The German companies studied formed part of the Mittelstand, the family-owned sector which is unique to German-speaking countries. This book explores whether the principles of a close identification with the surrounding region and a patriarchal culture within a 'family' atmosphere were adopted in practice then, and whether they are still applicable today. Paulson compares the Mittelstand to British SMEs in order to understand how their approach differed from that of their German counterparts. For both countries, the 'ecosystem' which surrounded businesses is examined, paying particular attention to funding and vocational education. The book concludes that the potential for a British Mittelstand existed, but that British companies were often less well managed and had to operate within a less supportive external environment than that which favoured the Mittelstand. Historical lessons learned from the management of these companies still resonate today, and can help us to understand contemporary differences in business performance. This book will therefore be of interest to scholars and students of twentieth-century business and economic history, as well as management studies.

Book excerpt: This title, originally published in 1984, is based on a study of the work of general and production managers in companies in Britain and Germany, and gives a life-like account of the realities of management, including the problems, crises and unresolved tensions. Throughout the book the author draws comparisons between management style and performance in Britain and Germany. Designed primarily for management and business studies undergraduates, the book gives an excellent idea of what industry is really like. For students who are committed to a career in management but who lack experience of industry, this realistic and down-to-earth account will be invaluable.
