Book excerpt: Excerpt from Managing the Small Forest The first person to benefit from a well-managed forest is its owner. The timber it yields will help and give work to many peo ple, but first of all it will put cash in its owner's pocket or at least save him from having to buy fuel and lumber. It will save his land from erosion and will conserve the water he uses. It will bring him profits from land that might otherwise be almost worthless. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Manual of Forest Management The object of the present manual is to present a brief and simplified text-book on Forest Management, based on a purely practical foundation. The standard works on this subject sometimes present - for the student, and especially for the public - a rather formidable appearance, and contain an exposition of high theory a part of which at the present time is seldom, if ever, capable of practical application to the forest conditions of our own country, or of our possessions in other parts of the world. An attempt is made therefore to produce a simplified practical review of this subject from which are eliminated all reference to advanced theories which are not at present susceptible of practical application, and all other matters of purely academic interest. Some confusion has resulted, it is thought, in the past, from attempting to embrace in one study such diverse conditions as obtain in the most intensively worked continental forests which have been highly organised for generations, in the vast forests of India which are still generally in their natural state of the utmost irregularity, and thirdly in the small estate woodlands and plantations of our own country. An attempt is therefore made now to discriminate between such different types of forest with a view to elucidate and facilitate the preparation of suitable working-plans for each type. Use has been made of the following standard works on Forest Management: Manual of Forestry, vol. iii. Sir Wm. Schlich; The Forester, J. Nisbet; The Practice of Forestry, P. T. Maw; British Estate Forestry, A. C. Forbes; Forest Working Plans in India, W. E. D'Arcy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteen Years of Management on the Crossett Farm Forestry Forties Shortly after the Crossett Experimental Forest was established in south Arkansas in 1937, it was decided to study the management possibilities of these small tracts of timber. The first objective was to attempt to change previous cutting practice and see if well-managed woodlands containing a mixture of loblolly and shortleaf pine could not be a very profitable part of the average farm. The second objective was to try to put the timber crop on the same annual-return basis as row cr0ps such as corn or cotton. Back in 1937, these were radical propositions, for timber had never brought the farmers much income and the average farm woodland was badly depleted. Book excerpt: Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes.

Book excerpt: _______________________ 'A comedy with teeth ... razor sharp and darkly funny' (TIMES) 'Boyle's prose is so good and his imagination so fertile that after a while you just sit back and are swept along' (TELEGRAPH) 'Surreal, daring and compassionate. Easily one of the best books of the year' (MAIL) 'Superb ... if Boyle was from this side of the pond, this is the book they'd all have to beat for the Booker Prize' (SUNDAY TIMES) It's 2025, and 75-year-old environmentalist and retired eco-terrorist Ty Tierwater is eking out a bleak living managing a pop star's private zoo. It is the last one in southern California, and vital for the cloning of its captive species. Once, Ty was so serious about environmental causes that as a radical activist committed to Earth Forever! he endangered the lives of both his daughter, Sierra, and his wife, Andrea. Now, when he's just trying to survive in a world cursed by storm and drought, Andrea re-enters his life. Frightening, funny, surreal and gripping, T.C. Boyle's story is both a modern morality tale, and a provocative vision of the future.
