Book excerpt: The sixth edition of Financial Management provides students with an overview of financial management suited to the first course in finance. The focus of the text is on the big picture, providing an introduction to financial decision making grounded in current financial theory and the current state of world economic conditions. Attention is paid to both valuation and capital markets, as well as their influence on corporate financial decisions. The 10 basic principles of finance are introduced in the first chapter and woven throughout the text, to give students a solid foundation from which to build their knowledge of finance. The goal of this text is to go beyond teaching the tools of a discipline or a trade and help students gain a complete understanding of the subject. This will give them the ability to apply what they have learnt to new and as yet unforeseen problems—in short, to educate students in finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If where an organization allocates its resources determines its strategy, why is it that so few companies actively manage the resource allocation process? "Optimizing Corporate Portfolio Management: Aligning Investment Proposals with Organizational Strategy" goes beyond platitudes about why you should use corporate portfolio management (CPM) by offering a practical methodology to bring this powerful discipline to your organization. "Optimizing Corporate Portfolio Management" takes an expansive view of where CPM can be utilized by demonstrating that it can be used across any business line, product group or functional area, e.g., IT, R&D, innovation, marketing, salesforce, capital expenditure, etc. CPM is appropriate anywhere discretionary investments are being selected and executed. As a result, other terms used to describe portfolio management such as IT portfolio management, enterprise portfolio management, and project portfolio management are all merely subsets or slices of CPM. The book is written by Anand Sanwal, an expert on CPM, who has led American Express' CPM discipline (referred to as American Express Investment Optimization). American Express' CPM efforts are widely recognized as the most extensive, substantial and progressive deployment of CPM across any organization. Sanwal avoids academic theories and consultant jargon to ultimately deliver pragmatic and proven recommendations on how to make CPM a reality. The book features a foreword by Gary Crittenden, former CFO and EVP of American Express, and several case studies from leading financial services, technology, and government organizations utilizing CPM. Additionally, the book has received significant praise from thought leaders at Google, HP, American Express, The CFO Executive Board, Gartner, Accenture Marketing Sciences, The Wharton School of Business and many others.

Volume I covers managing strategy through capital project portfolios; Volume III is a complete case study. This volume describes the strategic challenge of adding real economic value, properly and rigorously defined. The author explains how this is accomplished through the capital budgeting process; discusses the importance of free cash flow and finally, capital projects, as financial options, are discussed, as a way to manage risk while enhancing the likelihood of project approval. The author is a retired business professor; his research interest has been the management of technology and innovation. For this book, he double-checked none of the 1,250 media items collected, accepting their overall veracity at face value. This approach advocates no one person, no one company, no one technology, and no portion of the global automobile industry. Analysis and practical application came foremost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Procedures for Capital Budgeting Under Uncertainty Accordingly, the cost of capital is defined as the minimum expected rate of return on a project (with given risk characteristics) such that share price is increased by the project's adoption. The cost of capital is thus used as a hurdle rate, with the height of the barrier depending on the risk characteristics of the project compared with those of alternative investments open to shareholders. It is easy to point out deficiencies in this "NPV approach" - for instance, most authors are conspicuously vague about how to measure the hurdle rates appropriate to projects with different risk characteristics. The important point for our purposes, however, is that the NPV approach presumes projects to be risk-independent. That is, it presumes that the value of project B does not depend on the risk characteristics of the firm's existing assets, or of other investments the firm may undertake. 2. Treat capital budgeting as a problem of portfolio selection. - The framework for portfolio selection originally presented by Markowitz [10] [11] is now well-known and widely accepted, although difficulties in assembling data and performing the required calculations have limited its use in practice. The similarity between the tasks of portfolio selection and capital budgeting has led Lintner, among others, to conclude that "the problem of determining the best capital budget of any given size is formally identical to the solution of a security portfolio analysis." Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 5.50, Anglia Ruskin University, language: English, abstract: This report addresses a paradox: high profit and at the same time significant debts for the company. Seen from this perspective, the profit regarded as the difference between the total revenue and the total costs and the cash flow seen as the incomings and outgoing of cash of a particular company is somehow different. One of the reasons for that is the usage of the accounting conventions of the accruals; however the issues relating to the working capital management are also of importance. In this field of development, the way changes in the working capital affect cash flow will be analyzed and important recommendations will be made.
