Book Synopsis Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes by : Joan Voller
Download or read book Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes written by Joan Voller and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide information to those who wish to interact with the landbase in an ecologically sustainable manner. Practitioners charged with the administration of land-based programs in industry and government will find the information presented useful. It should also be a resource for many community groups involved in land-use decision-making. Humans continue to use forests and make decisions about land use without perfect information. Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes is intended to enable the improvement of planning and decison-making processes by providing ecological information on issues of forest use. Current approaches are not working. Where information exists on new, ecologically sustainable approaches, practitioners should switch. Where the information on a better approach is not yet available, practitioners should replace the current, inappropriate approach with a variety of flexible ones that offer the opportunity to change with new knowledge.
Book Synopsis Global to Local: Ecological Land Classification by : Richard A. Sims
Download or read book Global to Local: Ecological Land Classification written by Richard A. Sims and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Land Classification (ELC) refers to the description of land resources at a range of spatial resolutions (i.e. global to local) and for a range of purposes or values. The emerging science of ELC is in fact a very carefully integrated blend of vegetation and earth sciences, climatology, cartography and ecology with a range of new technologies and methodologies including computer-based geographic information systems, remote sensing and simulation modelling. This publication defines the current `state-of-the-art' of ELC. It provides particular insight into the role of ELC in current and future forest resource planning and management, and emphasizes its application and usefulness at various spatial scales, for a variety of geographic locations, and under a range of management scenarios/constraints. The book is an invaluable and substantial reference source about the current trends in ELC and will be of particular value to ecologists, foresters, geographers, resource managers, wildlife biologists, GIS and remote sensing specialists, educators and students.

Book Synopsis Caribou Habitat Use in the Chelaslie River Migration Corridor and Recommendations for Management by : J. D. Steventon
Download or read book Caribou Habitat Use in the Chelaslie River Migration Corridor and Recommendations for Management written by J. D. Steventon and published by B.C. Ministry of Forests, Forestry Division Services Branch, Production Resources. This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a project that intended to determine the relative importance of the Chelaslie River study area to caribou (Rangifer tarandus), to determine whether habitats exist in the area which are preferentially used by the caribou, and to provide habitat management recommendations. The 87,000-hectare study area is located south of Ootsa Lake and north of Tetachuck Lake, east of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in British Columbia. The area was selected to be larger than a previously defined caribou migration corridor in order to incorporate all observed locations of caribou, which were monitored by radio tracking from spring 1993 to spring 1995. Results presented include degree of use of the migration corridor, and habitat selection by season and within subzones of the area.

It deals primarily with the collection & stratification of site-specific field data. After information on office preparation, stratification, plot establishment, and mapping procedures, the guide presents data collection procedures for silviculture prescription field forms. Copies of forms are included in the appendix. The data cover such matters as site characteristics, understorey & overstorey, soils, riparian & watershed values, soil & fire hazards, silvicultural systems & objectives, harvesting, forest health, stand tending, and forest resource values.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region by : Gillian Radcliffe
Download or read book Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region written by Gillian Radcliffe and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prince Rupert Forest Region occupies somewhat more than one-quarter of the land area of British Columbia and encompasses a broad spectrum of physiographic and climatic units. This project identified the major known components of terrestrial biological diversity and the major information gaps, emphasizing the ecosystem and species diversity in forested areas. To produce an ecosystem synopsis, the wildlife habitat classification was correlated with the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification to facilitate future cross-referencing. Vascular plant diversity was not specifically examined other than for rare and endangered species. Vertebrates were documented within forested subzones and variants to identify species diversity, determine habitat affinities of species of interest, and develop possible management guilds and management indicator species for forestry management. The taxonomy, abundance, and distribution of both fungi and invertebrates in the region were also investigated. Marine and freshwater species were excluded.
