Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cyst nematodes are a major group of plant pathogens of economic importance in many countries throughout the world. Considerable yield losses have been attributed to cyst nematodes attacking potatoes, sugar beet, soybean and cereals. Because of the protective cyst that is formed, which encloses the eggs, they pose special problems in their control and also in preventing their distribution in soil from infested areas. There has been much research on many aspects of the biology of cyst nematodes and the large number of publications are testimony to their importance as crop pests and of the interest of nematologists in the group. Nevertheless, they continue to pose problems because of the complexity of their phylogeny and taxonomy and there is still much to be investigated on their biology, particularly with those aspects which relate to improving the effectiveness of control. In many respects the biology of the various cyst nematode species is similar, although with variations due to different interactions with hosts and geographical location. Thus, research on any one species has general applicability and this is particularly so with regard to evaluation of control measures, or to the methodology of soil sampling for the assessment of populations prior to growing crops.

Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes are recognized as one of the greatest threats to crop production throughout the world. Estimated annual crop losses of $8 billion in the United States and $78 billion worldwide are attributed to plant parasitic nematodes. Plant parasitic nematodes not only cause damage individually but form disease-complexes with other microorganisms thereby increasing crop loss. Nematode diseases of crops are difficult to control because of their insidious nature and lack of specific diagnostic symptoms which closely resemble those caused by other plant pathogens and abiotic diseases. Future developments of sustainable management systems for preventing major economical agricultural losses due to nematodes is focused on strategies that limit production costs, enhance crop yields, and protect the environment. This book presents a first compendium and overview for nematode problems and their management across North America. Each chapter provides essential information on the occurrence and distribution of plant parasitic nematodes, their major crop hosts, impact on crop production and sustainable management strategies for each region of the continent including, Canada, Mexico and all states of the USA. For each region, a thematic overview of changes in crop production affected by plant parasitic nematodes and their management strategies over time will provide invaluable information on the important role of plant parasitic nematodes in sustainable agriculture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p. ills. (partly col.). maps. 25 cm. Description : Plant parasitic nematodes are one of the least understood agricultural pest problems throughout the world. Science of Plant Nematology has grown rapidly is the last three decades. There is a wide gap between the vast information generated for nematode control and that, which is actually utilised. The present book ``Advances in Nematology'' provides an authoritative review account of many aspects of current interest and progress in the field of Plant Nematology that has been made in the recent past. This book includes 21 articles by eminent nematologist on different aspects of the subject. Information on application of molecular biology in nematology, nematodes as biological model, race status in plant parasitic nematodes and nematode vectors of plant diseases have been reviewed covering all major aspects. Nematode diseases on wheat, rice, tobacco, mint, barley and horticultural crops and their management, specially in context to Indian scenario have been covered. Newer approaches for the management of plant parasitic nematodes including use of VAM fungi, biocontrol agents and integrated nematode management strategies have been included to project out their use on field scale. Articles on role of nematodes in disease complexes with fungi, genetic studies on the resistance of barley, breeding for nematode resistance in forage legumes and nematode pests of economically important crops in India and their managements have been added to the value of the book.Scholars and students of Nematology, researchers and extension workers and plant pathologist will find this book very useful.CONTENTS 1. This book was released on 2018 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased prevalence of agricultural pests in cereal fields of Southeastern Idaho is associated with increased population density of virulent pathotypes with high level of resistance to conventional control methods. The situation is caused by continuous planting of susceptible cultivars and failure in management strategies and is now to become a serious threat to the Idaho's cereal productions. Two major pests are responsible for most of the damage: cereal cyst nematode Heterodera avenae (CCN), and wireworms (the larval stage of click beetles Coleoptera: Elateridae). When the absence of high-yield resistant cultivars and lack of effective registered nematicides are the two main challenges of the CCN management, the increase in wireworm's population and their damage is the results of failure in all conventional control strategies against wireworm. In my four years studies, along with the characterization of CCN population and assessment of resistance and tolerance of spring wheat cultivars, I successfully isolated populations of entomopathogenic nematodes form southeastern Idaho that could provide great biological control against wireworms. The results would hopefully provide a platform for the future agricultural studies.
