Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management Policies, 2001 The management of the national park system and nps programs is guided by the Constitution, public laws, treaties, proclamations, Executive orders, regulations, and directives of the Secretary of the Interior and the Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. Nps policy must be consistent with these higher authorities, and with appropriate delegations of authority. Many of the statutes and other guidance affecting the various facets of nps administration and management are cited for reference purposes throughout Management Policies. Other laws, regulations, and policies related to the administration of federal programs, although not cited, may also apply. For example, many, but not all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zion National Park General Management Plan As one of 384 units in the national park system, Zion National Park is under the management of the National Park Service (nps). The Park Service manages all park units in accordance with the mandate in its 1916 Organic Act and other legislation to conserve resources unim paired for the enjoyment of future generations. To help achieve this mandate, the National Parks and Recreation Act of 1978 and nps Management Policies (nps 2001) require each national park unit to have a broad-scale general management plan (gmp). The purpose of this General Management Plan is to describe the general path the National Park Service intends to follow in managing Zion National Park over the next 20 years. The plan does not provide specific and detailed answers to every issue or question facing Zion. However, the plan does provide a framework for proactive decision making on such issues as visitor use, natural and cultural resource management, and park development, which will allow park man agers to effectively address future problems and opportunities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rules of Management: With Practical Instructions on Machine Building Now suppose he adopts the first method. Usually the first thing the new managers, or the men who have filled the various subordinate positions in the past, do, is to go to the men who hold the purse strings and say, It is necessary that we get more equipment at this point and better equipment at that point, and an addition to a building must be made here, a new building erected there, etc., and because it is supposed that these men know what they are talking about, these demands are met. The new equipment is obtained; the buildings erected, and then results such as would ordinarily be expected as obtainable are looked for; but surprises and disappoints ments come instead. This is a traditional approach to management using the leading, planning, organizing, and controlling approach. Management is a broad business discipline, and the Principles of Management course covers many management areas such as human resource management and strategic management, as well as behavioral areas such as motivation. No one individual can be an expert in all areas of management, so an additional benefit of this text is that specialists in a variety of areas have authored individual chapters.

Book excerpt: With today's communications industry experiencing major changes on an almost daily basis, media managers must have a clear understanding of the different delivery platforms, as well as a grasp of critical management, planning, and economic factors in order to stay current and move their organizations forward. Telecommunications and Business Strategy helps current and future media professionals understand the relationship and convergence patterns between the broadcast, cable television, telephony, and Internet communication industries. Author Richard A. Gershon examines telecommunications industry structures and the management practices and business strategies affecting the delivery of information and entertainment services to consumers. He brings in specialists to present the finer points of management and planning responsibilities. Case studies from the International Radio and Television Society (IRTS) competition supplement the main text and offer an invaluable perspective on management issues. Developed for students in telecommunications management, electronic media management, and telecommunication economics, this volume also serves as a practical reference for the professional manager.

This book was released on 2008-06-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: st The world of the 21 century is, more than ever, global and impersonal. Criminal and terrorist threats, both physical and on the Internet, increase by the day. The demand for better methods of identification and access control is growing, not only in companies and organisations but also in the world at large. At the same time, such security measures have to be balanced with means for protecting the privacy of users. Identity management is put under pressure, due to the growing number of frauds who want to hide their true identity. This challenges the information security research community to focus on interdisciplinary and holistic approaches while retaining the benefits of previous research efforts. In this context, the IFIP Working Group 11.6 on Identity Management has been founded in August 2006. The intention of the Working Group is to offer a broad forum for the exchange of knowledge and for the tracking and discussion of issues and new developments. In this, we take an interdisciplinary approach. Scientists as well as practitioners, from government and business, who are involved in the field of identity management are welcome to participate. The IDMAN 2007 Conference on Policies and Research in Identity Management was the very first conference organized by this Working Group. We aim to organize conferences bi-annually. The IDMAN 2007 Conference has been centered around the theme of National Identity Management or, in other words, identity management in the public sector.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Readings in Management This set of readings is designed to supplement standard texts in funda mentals of administrative or industrial management. Although the selec tions are arranged to be assigned concurrently with s'uch texts, they might well provide the basis for a variable-credit course dealing with specific management topics, such as human relations or organization theory. The articles could also be used to supplement a case course; for example, prob lems in administration policy and practice. Moreover, these readings should prove to be a stimulant and provide controversy for members of executive development programs. The purpose Of this readings text is twofold. First, a real understanding of management ultimately requires a professional or artistic orientation. Thus, contemporary textbooks emphasize such aspects of the subject, even at the expense of examining causal explanations and presenting the logic employed in developing specific techniques and concepts. Because of the changing nature of utilitarian Skills and techniques, progress in the field of management rests upon an understanding of its basic foundation. To further this Objective, many of the selections are drawn from disciplines which might be termed the mother sciences of management. Book excerpt: Record breaking hurricane seasons, tornados, tsunamis, earthquakes, and intentional acts of mass-casualty violence, give lie to the delusion that disasters are the anomaly and not the norm. Disaster management is rooted in the fundamental belief that we can protect ourselves. Even if we cannot control all the causes, we can prepare and respond. We
