Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime ecosystems along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts support the military mission of the United States Department of Defense (DoD). Since the DoD mission has not required large-scale urbanization of the coast, these ecosystems also provide high quality habitat for several federally threatened and endangered plant and animal species (TES). TES conservation is compatible with military land use, as long as native plant communities remain subject to the cycles of disturbance and regeneration characteristic of the coastal zone. This report discusses four vegetation types that comprise the natural areas that support maritime TES: the overwash community, the sand dune community, the maritime shrub community, and the evergreen maritime forest community. Disruption of the natural processes of beach erosion and rebuilding through construction of seawalls, jetties, artificial dunes and beaches, roads, and urban areas is probably the most harmful human impact to maritime communities and their associated TES. Since the native maritime plant communities are relatively resilient to military training activities, conservation of this high quality TES habitat is not problematic on DoD lands. Protection of TES during critical times such as migration and the breeding season may be accommodated through seasonal or spatial restrictions on activities.

Book Synopsis Marine Protected Areas by : National Research Council
Download or read book Marine Protected Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the ocean-and the resources within-seem limitless, there is clear evidence that human impacts such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution disrupt marine ecosystems and threaten the long-term productivity of the seas. Declining yields in many fisheries and decay of treasured marine habitats, such as coral reefs, has heightened interest in establishing a comprehensive system of marine protected areas (MPAs)-areas designated for special protection to enhance the management of marine resources. Therefore, there is an urgent need to evaluate how MPAs can be employed in the United States and internationally as tools to support specific conservation needs of marine and coastal waters. Marine Protected Areas compares conventional management of marine resources with proposals to augment these management strategies with a system of protected areas. The volume argues that implementation of MPAs should be incremental and adaptive, through the design of areas not only to conserve resources, but also to help us learn how to manage marine species more effectively.

Book Synopsis Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities by : Sarah Legge
Download or read book Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities written by Sarah Legge and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monitoring is integral to all aspects of policy and management for threatened biodiversity. It is fundamental to assessing the conservation status and trends of listed species and ecological communities. Monitoring data can be used to diagnose the causes of decline, to measure management effectiveness and to report on investment. It is also a valuable public engagement tool. Yet in Australia, monitoring threatened biodiversity is not always optimally managed. Monitoring Threatened Species and Ecological Communities aims to improve the standard of monitoring for Australia's threatened biodiversity. It gathers insights from some of the most experienced managers and scientists involved with monitoring programs for threatened species and ecological communities in Australia, and evaluates current monitoring programs, establishing a baseline against which the quality of future monitoring activity can be managed. Case studies provide examples of practical pathways to improve the quality of biodiversity monitoring, and guidelines to improve future programs are proposed. This book will benefit scientists, conservation managers, policy makers and those with an interest in threatened species monitoring and management.
Book Synopsis The Status of Protection Programs for Endangered, Threatened, and Depleted Marine Mammals in U. S. Waters by : Marine Mammal Marine Mammal Commission

Each profile summarizes information on the taxon's status, major threats, management framework, critical habitat, recovery planning, major management actions, and staffing and funding levels. The third summarizes overall trends in protection programs for the listed species and populations, based on those profiles. Appendices include tables and charts with estimates of expenditures for related conservation programs, additional details regarding key provisions of the MMPA and the ESA, and information on the status of the various taxa.
