Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date and multidisciplinary, this text brings together all of the latest research and clinical treatment strategies for the management of injuries to the chest wall and rib cage. The management of trauma to the chest wall, especially “flail chest” injuries, has been relatively stagnant for many years. Non-operative treatment has been the standard of care, and despite some advances, has reached the point where there is little new to offer a severely traumatized patient. However, recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the interest in surgical fixation of unstable chest wall injuries. Specifically, plate or intramedullary nail fixation of multiple rib fractures has rapidly become the state-of-the-art in many trauma centers, and there have multiple research papers, reviews, new fixation devices, and instructional courses at national level meetings on this topic. This book assembles a diverse group of experts in the field—orthopedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, anesthetists, basic science researchers—to produce the definitive work on this topic that will appeal to a wide variety of medical practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 75% of patients who die from trauma have injuries to the chest. The care of the chest trauma patient can be incredibly complex, require multiple specialty and sub-specialty services, and may require interventions available only at quaternary referral centers. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of chest trauma. The text reviews all aspects of chest wall, intra-thoracic organ, and great vessel injury management, with each section of the book structured anatomically to explore specific treatment options. The first section of the book contains an overview and introduction to the topic, discussing the definition and significance of chest trauma, initial resuscitation of the chest trauma patient, and centers of excellence, health systems, and regionalization. The following section is focused on chest wall injury, with chapters on acute rib fractures, sternal fracture, clavicle and scapula fractures, non-surgical aids in fracture healing, and anesthesia considerations. The next section spotlights thoracic organ injury, specifically focusing on cardiac injury, aorta and great vessel injury, esophageal injury, tracheal and pulmonary injury, and thoraco-abdominal and combined injuries. Since injury care alone is insufficient in guiding the totality of care, the fourth section is dedicated to inpatient critical care. Topics covered in this section include principles of ICU resuscitation, coagulopathy management, ICU monitoring, ventilator management, and advanced acute pain management. With the increase in violent extremism around the world, including the use of non-conventional weapons, as well as the plethora of natural and man-made disasters, disaster and mass casualty events is the timely subject of the book's final section. Specific topics tackled in this section include blast injury, blast lung, pulmonary aspiration, thoracic crush injury after natural and man-made disasters, toxic agent exposures, the role of the local facility during a national disaster, and the ethics of resource of allocation. The text also features over 100 high-yield illustrations, photographs, and tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pocket manual is a quick-reference handbook for general thoracic surgery. It is organized into 9 chapters providing a concise, yet inclusive list of the most common pathologies seen in thoracic surgery: pre-operative evaluation, peri-operative care, lungs and airways (divided into 3 separate sections to cover the vast number of topics), pleural disorders, mediastinal disorders, chest wall disorders, thoracic trauma, and benign and malignant esophageal disorders. The content of each chapter was specifically structured to make the handbook a high-yield reference that includes numerous management algorithms, flow diagrams, tables and images. Unlike a comprehensive textbook, paragraphs are kept at a minimum and the written material is presented using lists and bullet points to facilitate learning and retention. More importantly, the content is evidence-based and highlights the various controversies in the field. The Pocket Manual of General Thoracic Surgery is an irreplaceable educational tool amongst trainees and practicing physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded knowledge about the pathophysiologic effects of severe in juries, advancements in the intensive care of victims of multiple injuries, and the treatment made possible by modem cardiovascular surgery make it appear sensible to combine the assessment and therapy of thoracic injuries into a synthesis of various branches of medicine. This monograph, therefore, is intended not only for the specialist in thoracic or cardiac surgery but also primarily for the person who is the first to be confronted by thoracic injuries, namely, the general surgeon or the traumatologist. It reflects my own personal experience as chief surgeon of an emer gency surgery ward of a university hospital and as head of an inten sive care unit for the severely wounded, which treats well over 100 patients with severe thoracic injuries annually, and is based on an analysis of these cases. My experience as a military surgeon in Vietnam was also taken into consideration. Many wounds in the area of the thorax can be successfully treated with simple, conservative procedures, though by "conservative" I do not mean to imply "inactive." An aggressive conservatism is need ed, which must pay attention to small details. In given cases, how ever, it requires the quick decision-making capability of the com petent surgeon. For this reason, considerable space is devoted to questions of evaluation and practical procedures.

Book excerpt: The number of natural and man-made disasters has risen dramatically over the last decade. Natural disasters, industrial accidents and terrorist attacks represent major incidents, often involving multiple casualties. In such cases, health professionals face multiple challenges because the type of medical care required differs from what is taught and provided in their everyday hospital duties. The aim of this book is to inform and prepare healthcare professionals for the challenges posed by major incidents, so that they can act effectively in medical teams sent on humanitarian missions or into conflict zones. It offers a holistic and horizontal approach covering all stages of the disaster management cycle. The book is divided into 5 sections: section 1: prehospital emergency services; section ii: hospital response; section iii: management of incidents; section iv: after the disaster; and section v: evaluation, ethical issues, education and research. Healthcare providers will find essential information on the special medical considerations in both prehospital and hospital disaster settings, medical management of disaster response, recovery, mitigation and preparedness. The book offers an interdisciplinary and interprofessional approach, and was written by prominent researchers and experienced practitioners.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that we live in a violent world. Traumatic injuries are commonplace; every hospital, large or small, sees scores of such patients daily. Appropriate diagnosis and management of the trauma patient are necessary not only to save lives but also to minimize the morbidity which follows injury. It is not surprising, therefore, that several books covering various aspects of trauma diagnosis and treatment are published annually. They are, however, seldom redundant because of the continuing rapid evolution of knowledge relating to the diagnosis and management of the traumatized patient. This volume, restricted to the consideration of thoracic trauma, represents a comprehensive and authoritative study of chest injury. Dr. Groskin is exceptionally well qualified to discuss his subject, being Board Certified in Internal Medicine, in Pulmonary Diseases, and in Diagnostic Radiology. He has practiced and taught in these disciplines in several prestigious institutions. The author has used his multidisciplinary background to develop a book which is unique among others of its kind. The reader will quickly appreciate that it is unusual in its correlation of clinical information with radiological diagnosis. Unlike any other book on traumatology with which I am familiar, this volume discusses extensively the mechanisms of injury which make both clinical and radiological findings easier to understand and to remember. It also presents a meticulous approach to the diagnosis of the many forms of thoracic trauma in which all clinical and radiological diagnostic modalities are thoughtfully integrated.
