Book Synopsis Peace and Rural Development in Colombia by : Andrés García Trujillo
Download or read book Peace and Rural Development in Colombia written by Andrés García Trujillo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Peace and Rural Development in Colombia Andrés García Trujillo investigates whether peace agreements geared towards terminating internal armed conflicts trigger rural distributive changes. Combining academic rigor with an insider's perspective, García Trujillo shows that the peace agreement in Colombia opened an exceptional window for addressing rural inequality. Yet, despite some progress, he argues that the agreement's leverage to stir change was severely constrained by opposing actors within and outside the government. García Trujillo later applies the framework developed for the Colombian case to explain key dynamics of other post-conflict societies that have dealt with agrarian issues under a transitional context, like El Salvador or South Africa. The original theoretical framework and empirically rich analysis make Peace and Rural Development in Colombia an indispensable read to scholars and practitioners who wish to gain an understanding on the political economy of peace-making, policy change and rural development in Colombia and beyond.

Book Synopsis Social Media in Trinidad by : Jolynna Sinanan
Download or read book Social Media in Trinidad written by Jolynna Sinanan and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on 15 months of ethnographic research in one of the most under-developed regions in the Caribbean island of Trinidad, this book describes the uses and consequences of social media for its residents. Jolynna Sinanan argues that this semi-urban town is a place in-between: somewhere city dwellers look down on and villagers look up to. The complex identity of the town is expressed through uses of social media, with significant results for understanding social media more generally. Not elevating oneself above others is one of the core values of the town, and social media becomes a tool for social visibility; that is, the process of how social norms come to be and how they are negotiated. Carnival logic and high-impact visuality is pervasive in uses of social media, even if Carnival is not embraced by all Trinidadians in the town and results in presenting oneself and association with different groups in varying ways. The study also has surprising results in how residents are explicitly non-activist and align themselves with everyday values of maintaining good relationships in a small town, rather than espousing more worldly or cosmopolitan values.

Book Synopsis Teaching Civic Engagement Globally by : Elizabeth Matto
Download or read book Teaching Civic Engagement Globally written by Elizabeth Matto and published by American Political Science Association. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thriving and peaceful democracy requires an informed and engaged citizenry, but such citizenship must be learned. Educators around the globe are facing challenges in teaching politics in an era in which populist values are on the rise, authoritarian governance is legitimized, and core democratic tenets are regularly undermined by leaders and citizens alike. To combat anti-democratic outcomes and citizens' apathy, Teaching Civic Engagement Globally provides a wide range of pedagogical tools to help the current generation learn to effectively navigate debates and lead changes in local, national, and global politics. Contributors discuss key theoretical discussions and challenges regarding global civic engagement education, highlight successful evidence-based pedagogical approaches, and review effective ways to reach across disciplines and the global education community. Most importantly, the book provides tangible steps to link democratic education research with action that reflects contemporary global circumstances.
