Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally developed to help heterosexual couples, fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization and sperm donation have provided lesbians with new methods for achieving pregnancy during the past two decades. Queering Reproduction is an important sociological analysis of lesbians’ use of these medical fertility treatments. Drawing on in-depth interviews with lesbians who have been or are seeking to become pregnant, Laura Mamo describes how reproduction has become an intensely medicalized process for lesbians, who are transformed into fertility patients not (or not only) because of their physical conditions but because of their sexual identities. Mamo argues that this medicalization of reproduction has begun to shape queer subjectivities in both productive and troubling ways, destabilizing the assumed link between heterosexuality and parenthood while also reinforcing traditional, heteronormative ideals about motherhood and the imperative to reproduce. Mamo provides an overview of a shift within some lesbian communities from low-tech methods of self-insemination to a reliance on outside medical intervention and fertility treatments. Reflecting on the issues facing lesbians who become parents through assisted reproductive technologies, Mamo explores questions about the legal rights of co-parents, concerns about the genetic risks of choosing an anonymous sperm donor, and the ways decisions to become parents affect sexual and political identities. In doing so, she investigates how lesbians navigate the medical system with its requisite range of fertility treatments, diagnostic categories, and treatment trajectories. Combining moving narratives and insightful analysis, Queering Reproduction reveals how medical technology reconfigures social formations, individual subjectivity, and notions of kinship.

The books, revised and presented here as individual chapters, offer invaluable insights into the philosophy and way of life of Native Hawaiian culture: Pono (right way of living) Aloha (love and affection) Welina (welcome and hospitality) A'o (education) Ola (health and healing) Ho'oponopono (healing to make things right) Ho'omana (the sacred and spiritual) Alaka'i (leadership) Kākā'ōlelo (oratory) Ho'onohonoho (cultural management) Kapu (gender roles) Hewa (wrong way of living) Readers both familiar and unfamiliar with Native Hawaiian traditions and practices will find much to reflect on as well as practical guidance and knowledge. Throughout Chun draws on first-hand accounts from early Hawaiian historians, early explorers and missionaries, and nineteenth-century Hawaiian language publications--as well as his own experience, gained from a lifetime of engagement with the language and culture. No Nā Mamo contains new and updated information throughout, a completely new chapter on Aloha, color illustrations, prefaces by the author and editor, a new Afterword, and an Appendix describing the challenges faced in creating this book.

Thus, combating viral hepatitis remains one of the most pressing public health issues today. Animal models and cell-based systems are essential tools for addressing the many still unresolved basic and clinical problems. Experimental models are needed to better understand the viral life cycles, pathogenetic aspects and natural defense mechanisms, while preclinical models are required for evaluating novel preemptive and therapeutic strategies. Haly's traveling circus no longer has the allure of its glamorous past, but it still has one main attraction: the Flying Graysons, a family of trapeze artists featuring a teenage Dick Grayson. The only problem is that Dick loathes spending his summers performing tired routines for dwindling crowds. When the Lost Carnival opens nearby and threatens to pull Haly's remaining customers, Dick is among those drawn to its nighttime glow. But there are ancient forces at work at the Lost Carnival, and when Dick meets the mysterious Luciana and her nomadic family, he may be too mesmerized to recognize the danger ahead. Beneath the carnival's dazzling fireworks, Dick must decide between who he is and who he wants to be-choosing either loyalty to his family history or a glittering future with new friends and romance. Author Michael Moreci and illustrator Sas Milledge will suspend readers from a tightrope in this graphic novel, redefining Dick Grayson for a new generation.

Globally, the church is facing multiple challenges both rom within and from without. Despite the challenges, however, churches in the Majority World continue to grow rapidly. But is this growth in numbers accompanied by spiritual depth? And is this growth built upon biblical and theological foundations, so that the church can play its transforming role in the world? In this book, Dr Ermias Mamo makes the case for an integrated approach, guiding the reader through the topics of discipleship, mission and contextualization, for which he uses his home country of Ethiopia as a working example. Dr Mamo closes with strategies for effective contextualized discipleship and the impact such an approach will have on the future of the church. This is a resource that will benefit all who wish to be part of a church that seeks to shape its theological learning, institutional structure and core values around their identity in Christ and God-given mission.

Book excerpt: Roman Britain, 366 AD: Minna, an eighteen-year-old Roman serving girl, leads a quiet life with her grandmother, a Celtic herbal healer. But when her beloved grandmother dies, Minna must make a difficult choice—marry a man she loathes, or venture out alone to track down her brother, a soldier in a Roman garrison stationed in the war-torn and wild Scottish borderlands. Desperate to find her brother, Minna falls in with Cian, an aloof but charming young acrobat. A terrible mistake thrusts the pair into slavery in the wilds of barbarian Scotland, where the Romans wage war on the violent, blue-tattooed Picts in Eastern Scotland. Cahir, King of the Dalriadans of western Scotland, is caught in the middle of a war that will seal the fate of the Scots. Year by year, Cahir has watched in shame as his people fall under the Roman yoke. Now Cian and Minna, unwilling prisoners at Cahir’s fort, must fight for their survival.

Book excerpt: Continue the Chronicles of the Ordained Saga with The Blessing! The Secundus’s reign met a fiery end during the Time of Separation. Once more, the night sky bears only one moon, but the cost of peace has been steep. Witheleghe broke from the physical plane that once connected the realm to the outside world to protect the kingdom from Asmeodai. There is no way in or out of the Witheleghe except through the mighty fortress—Nottesdone. Scarladin also suffered. Cyaika's attack saw Yucca burn, and the cathedral crumble. The following years were marked by an uneasy peace secured through the alliance between Witheleghe and Scarladin. To strengthen the fragile bond between the two kingdoms, there has been a betrothal of King Darius’s eldest daughter, Saoirse, to King Edulf’s heir, Mithelk. A marriage destined to happen for both kings have sworn a Meitfe Oath that their children would marry. The children have grown up beside each other within Nottesdone, but the tension between kings has not lessened. King Edulf has been unforgiving toward the Flandigana king, believing King Darius has deceived him once too often. Yet, King Edulf does not dare oppose the wielder of Vaellyn magic. King Darius has his own worries, but none greater than the persistent whispers that Asmeodai still walks and threatens all in his path. King Darius has done all within his power to ensure that the line of those chosen to be the Ordained will not falter. The fate of both kingdoms depends upon those chosen few, and the trials ahead will test their resolve and unity like never before. Against the backdrop of lies and deceit, murder and betrayal, the Ordained face their greatest challenge. For when Asmeodai returns this time, there is no one safe from his wrath. Follow the sweeping fantasy adventure entrenched in royal intrigue, powerful foes, and magical exploits. Beware—the saga contains sword & sorcery, dragons and fleogans, and witches and wizards.
