Download or read book Mammon's Ecology written by Stan Goff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proverbs 22:22 enjoins the reader, “Don’t take advantage of the poor just because you can.” Mammon’s Ecology is a systematic investigation into the mysterious nature of modern money, which confronts us with the perplexing fact that, in the global economy as it is, we take advantage of the poor whether we want to or not. We destroy natural systems whether we want to or not. Ched Myers describes Mammon’s Ecology as a “workbook” about “the secret life of money.” Where Prather and others have shown that money is one of the perverse Powers described in Ephesians 6, Mammon’s Ecology details precisely how money exercises this peculiar power and outlines suggestions for Christians who feel trapped in this complicity—not just as individuals, but as church. Mammon’s Ecology is not a book about economics (which the author calls “the world’s best antidote to insomnia”), but rather a book about the “deep ecology” of (post)modern power and injustice. Read individually or as a group, Mammon’s Ecology will leave you unable to think about money the same way again.
Book Synopsis The Business of War by : James McCarty
Download or read book The Business of War written by James McCarty and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Business of War incisively interrogates the development and contemporary implications of the military-industrial complex. It exposes the moral dangers of life in neoliberal economies dependent upon war-making for their growth and brings the Christian tradition's abundance of resources into conversation with this phenomenon. In doing so, the authors invite us to rethink the moral possibilities of Christian life in the present day with an eye toward faithful resistance to "the business of war" and its influence in every aspect of our lives. In combining biblical, historical, theological, and ethical analyses of "the business of war," the authors invite us to better understand it as a new moral problem that demands a new, faithful response. Book Synopsis Kierkegaard’s Theological Sociology by : Paul Tyson
Download or read book Kierkegaard’s Theological Sociology written by Paul Tyson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard developed a distinctive type of sociology in the 1840s--a theological sociology. Looking at society through the lens of analysis categories such as worship, sin, and faith, Kierkegaard developed a profoundly insightful way of understanding how, for example, the modern mass media works. He gets right inside the urban world of Golden Age Denmark, and its religion, and analyses "the present age" of consumption, comfort, competition, distraction, and image-construction with astonishing depth. To Kierkegaard worship centers all individuals and all societies; hence his sociology is doxological. This book argues that we also live in the present age Kierkegaard described, and our way of life can be understood much better through Kierkegaard's lens than through the methodologically materialist categories of classical sociology. As social theory itself has moved beyond classical sociology, the social sciences are increasingly open to post-methodologically-atheist approaches to understanding what it means to be human beings living in social contexts. The time is right to recover the theological resources of Christian faith in understanding the social world we live in. The time has come to pick up where Kierkegaard left off, and to start working towards a prophetic doxological sociology for our times.
Download or read book Tough Gynes written by Stan Goff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Borderline, Stan Goff unpacked the association of masculinity with war. In Tough Gynes, using an incisive and often darkly humorous study of nine films featuring violent female leads, he untangles the confusion about “masculinity constructed as violence” when our popular stories feature women as violent protagonists. Whether read individually or with a group, Tough Gynes raises compelling questions about gender and violence, with a few provisional answers. Plus, you get to watch movies as you read it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem management has gained widespread visibility as an approach to the management of land to achieve sustainable natural resource use. Despite widespread interest in this emerging management paradigm, Ecosystems: Balancing Science with Management is the first book to directly propose approaches for implementing ecosystem management, give examples of viable tools, and discuss the potential implications of implementing an ecosystem approach. These ideas are framed in a historical context that examines the disjunction between ecological theory, environmental legislation and natural resources management.

Book Synopsis Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation by : Oswald J. Schmitz
Download or read book Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation written by Oswald J. Schmitz and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2007-02-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meeting today’s environmental challenges requires a new way of thinking about the intricate dependencies between humans and nature. Ecology and Ecosystem Conservation provides students and other readers with a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of ecological science and their applications, offering an essential overview of the way ecology can be used to devise strategies to conserve the health and functioning of ecosystems. The book begins by exploring the need for ecological science in understanding current environmental issues and briefly discussing what ecology is and isn’t. Subsequent chapters address critical issues in conservation and show how ecological science can be applied to them. The book explores questions such as: • What is the role of ecological science in decision making? • What factors govern the assembly of ecosystems and determine their response to various stressors? • How does Earth’s climate system function and determine the distribution of life on Earth? • What factors control the size of populations? • How does fragmentation of the landscape affect the persistence of species on the landscape? • How does biological diversity influence ecosystem processes? The book closes with a final chapter that addresses the need not only to understand ecological science, but to put that science into an ecosystem conservation ethics perspective.
