Book excerpt: This handy guide provides the information needed to identify all the species of marine mammals that occur along the California coast, and tells the best places to observe them. It also presents a compact survey of the remarkable adaptations that enable these astonishing creatures to survive in their ocean environment. The illustrations for this revised edition have been completely redone, taking advantage of new findings about the size and shape of flukes, dorsal fins, and other features in whales and dolphins, as well as shapes, sexual differences, and social behavior in seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Many of the marine mammals described in the book have made tremendous come-backs from near-extinction, notably the gray whales, elephant seals, and sea otters. They need strong protection if they are to be ensured of survival. This volume provides the basis for informed public understanding of these remarkable animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Mammals The area treated of in this volume is strictly California and that part of the Pacific Ocean properly belonging to California. All the mammals described are known to have been found with in the State or within sight of its shores. The number of species and subspecies proves to be very large. This is accounted for partly by the large extent and great latitudinal length of the State, but more by the very great variety of climate within the State, greater than occurs in any other State of the Union; grading all the way from the subtropical region of the Colorado Valley and Desert to the arctic climate of the eternal snows on the summits of the Sierra Nevada. No general work covering the mammals of this State has been published since 1857, when Baird's Vol. VIII of the Pacific Railroad' Reports was issued. This did not contain the marine mammals, the bats nor man. A great advance in our knowledge of the land mammals has occurred within the last fifteen years, and some of the material obtained in this time has not yet been critically examined by systematic experts, hence we may expect further additions to the present known species, as well as more or less revision of the nomenclature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The California Current--part of the large, swirling North Pacific gyre--flows slowly southward along the west coast of North America, stretching nearly 2,000 miles from southern British Columbia to the tip of Baja California in Mexico. To a casual observer standing on the shore, the vast current betrays no discernible signs, yet life abounds just over the horizon. Stan Ulanski takes us into the water on a journey through this magnificent, unique marine ecosystem, illuminating the scientific and biological marvels and the astonishing array of flora and fauna streaming along our Pacific coast. The waters of the California Current yield a complex broth of planktonic organisms that form the base of an elaborate food web that many naturalists have compared to the species-rich Serengeti ecosystem of Africa. Every year, turtles, seals, fish, and seabirds travel great distances to feast in the current's distinct biological oases and feeding sites. Apex predators, such as the California gray whale, humpback whale, salmon shark, and bluefin tuna, undertake extensive north-south migrations within the current to find enough to eat. The California Current energizes us to celebrate and protect a marine ecosystem integral to the myriad fisheries, coastal communities, and cultures of the Pacific coast.
