Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mammals and Birds of Alaska Experiments have been made in the introduction of game animals that could subsist upon certain foods not much utilized by native Alaskan species. A shipment of 8 Roosevelt elk, liberated on Afognak Island in 1927, has increased to a present herd of 200 or more fine, healthy animals. It is believed that the larger neighboring island of Kodiak will at some time be naturally stocked from this herd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds and Mammals of the Stikine River Region of Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Alaska In years past the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology has conducted several expeditions to the coast of southeastern Alaska, covering in all a large part of that district, and one to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, nearby and of somewhat similar character.1 As one result of this field work the Museum has obtained a representative collection of the birds and mammals of this strongly characterized northwestern coast region of North America. Of the closely adjacent interior of British Columbia, however, the Museum contained no specimens whatever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biological Survey of the Pribilof Islands, Alaska: I. Birds and Mammals; II. Insects, Arachnids, and Chilopods The Pribilof Islands consist of five small islands situated in Bering Sea, in latitude 57 north and longitude 170° west, 200 miles from the nearest lands, being this distance north of the Aleutian Chain and approximately the same distance south of St. Matthew Islands. The largest and best known of the group are St. Paul and St. George, the former, about 13 miles long, with a coast line of 45 miles; and the latter, 12 miles long, with a coast line of 30 miles (pls. II, III, and IV) The smaller islands are all close to St. Paul Walrus, about 6 miles to the east; Otter, about 4 miles to the south; and Sealion Rock, a mere rock close to the south shore (pl. III). The group is of volcanic origin and the shore lines are mainly rocky, in many places precipitous (pl. V). On St. Paul these rough stretches are interrupted by sandy beaches, which often extend for miles; on St. George, the beaches are few in number, and not ex tensive. Back from the shore the land usually rises, gradually slop ing plateaus being surmounted by rocky or sandy eminences, in some cases the craters of extinct volcanoes. These hills are most numer ous on St. Paul, where two attain elevations of 590 and 665 feet, respectively. The highest hill on St. George, Ulekiah, has an eleva tion of 945 feet. No better way has been devised of fixing the colors of a bird in the mind than this; and in many schools the coloring of these outlines takes the place of the ordinary exercise in drawing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Kilbuck and Ahklun Mountain Region, Alaska The avifauna of this area has received little attention. Early studies in southwestern Alaska did not extend much beyond the Alaska Peninsula (chapman 1904; Osgood 1904) and the eastern end of Bristol Bay (hurley 193 1 or they were restricted to the Yukon - Kuskokwim River Delta (dice 1920a, 1920b; Conover 1926; Brandt 1943; Walkinshaw 1948a, 1948b, 1949; Walkinshaw and Stophlet 1949; Cady et al. 1955; William son D. Bernard Bull (in Friedmann 1933, 1934, 1936; Bent 1938) collected and observed birds near Goodnews Bay in the 1930's. Sub sequent studies and surveys conducted by personnel of the us. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game extended into this area, but these were concentrated on coastal locations. Informa tion was generally restricted to estimates of numbers of migrants using estuaries and of breeding seabirds (ameson 1977; Sowls et al. Recently, personnel of the us. Fish and Wildlife Service, us. Bureau of Land Management, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and others have made aerial surveys and float trips down some of the rivers during which they listed birds seen. Here, we present a detailed assessment of the relative abundance, seasonal occurrence, distribution, and habitat use of birds in the Kilbuck and Ahklun mountain region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Kodiak Island, Alaska Kodiak Island by far the most important collection of recent years is that made by Beck in 1919 for the Biological Survey and Dr. L. C. Sanford (375 skins). The chances are that occasional specimens have been taken by a number of others and are scattered throughout the principal museums of Europe and America with no clue as to their presence. In 1932 and again in 1934 Dr. Hrdlicka collected a large number of avian bones in old Eskimo middens he was excavating. These have supplied many additional data to our knowledge of Kodiak ornithology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
