Book excerpt: Based on a true story, Mamas' Drama takes place from 1929 to 2004. It shares the experiences of four generations as they move through the "mama's baby, daddy's maybe" condition, which occurs when the identity of the father is questionable. This story begins in Harriman, Tennessee when main character, Josephine Stewart, is almost 8 years old. Josephine loves and cherishes her daddy, Thomas Sr. Her Mama, Millie, reveals to her that Thomas is not her biological father, and that she is born from an extramarital affair Millie had with the mayor of the small town. This revelation turns Josephine's world upside down, and she struggles with feelings that her daddy will not love her the same. The Stewart family migrates to Columbus, Ohio in 1934. Three years later, Josephine meets and eventually marries the love of her life; an older man named George Price. Their marriage is challenged by extramarital affairs. There are nine Price children in George and Josephine's family, including children born as a result of Josephine's indiscretions. Josephine chooses to keep their fathers' identities secret. Suzette, one of her daughters, feels she is a product of her mother's indiscretions, and seeks to find the truth about her biological father. Suzette's siblings taunt her about the identity of her father, and others tell her that she is not George's child. Suzette later determines to break the generational "mama's baby, daddy's maybe" condition. She marries and has a son, Devon, who becomes a single dad while in college. Mamas' Drama is a universal story, and is realistic historical fiction at its best. Compelling and inspiring, it weaves the actions and consequences of guilt and shame. Emotions are unbridled as this poignant, yet sometimes humorous book cries out stories most people only whisper. Healing, forgiveness, love and redemption lie within these pages, and those who are directly or indirectly affected by the "mama's baby, daddy's maybe" condition can relate to the words written in this book.

Book excerpt: Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process. Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive. As a daughter of Christ, you have been called to be more than an average mama. Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. M is for Mama offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.

Book excerpt: Larry Brown has been a force in American literature since taking critics by storm with his debut collection, Facing the Music, in 1988. His subsequent work—five novels, another story collection, and two books of nonfiction—continued to bring extraordinary praise and national attention to the writer New York Newsday called a "master." In November 2004, Brown sent the nearly completed manuscript of his sixth novel to his literary agent. A week later, he died of a massive heart attack. He was fifty-three years old. A Miracle of Catfish is that novel. Brown's trademarks—his raw detail, pared-down prose, and characters under siege—are all here. This beautiful, heartbreaking anthem to the writer's own North Mississippi land and the hard-working, hard-loving, hard-losing men it spawns is the story of one year in the lives of five characters—an old farmer with a new pond he wants stocked with baby catfish; a bankrupt fish pond stocker who secretly releases his forty-pound brood catfish into the farmer's pond; a little boy from the trailer home across the road who inadvertently hooks the behemoth catfish; the boy's inept father; and a former convict down the road who kills a second time to save his daughter. That Larry Brown died so young, and before he could see A Miracle of Catfish published, is a tragedy. That he had time to enrich the legacy of his work with this remarkable book is a blessing.

Book excerpt: When seven-year-old Bethany meets her six-year-old cousin Reana Mae, it's the beginning of a kinship of misfits that saves both from a bone-deep loneliness. Every summer, Bethany and her family leave Indianapolis for West Virginia's Coal River Valley. For Bethany's mother, the trips are a reminder of the coalmines and grinding poverty of her childhood, of a place she'd hoped to escape. But her loving relatives, and Bethany's friendship with Reana Mae, keep them coming back. But as Bethany grows older, she realizes that life in this small, close-knit community is not as simple as she once thought. . .that the riverside cabins that hold so much of her family's history also teem with scandalous whispers. . .and that those closest to her harbor unimaginable secrets. Amid the dense woods and quiet beauty of the valley, these secrets are coming to light at last, with a force devastating enough to shatter lives, faith, and the bond that Bethany once thought would last forever. Spanning four decades, Sherri Wood Emmons' debut is a haunting, captivating novel about the unexpected, sometimes shocking events that thrust us into adulthood--and the connections that keep us tethered, always, to our pasts.

When her world and her dream laid in ruins, pulled down by one she loved, and she stood as the only barrier between her five young boys and an uncertain future, she put aside concerns for her self and became their rock. When the abyss of despair beckoned, she offered them the lifeline of hope. When their hearts might have grown bitter with thoughts of hate and anger and vengeance, she taught them the solace of forgiveness, and when the road ahead laid hidden by clouds of doubt and dread, she whispered “Come with me” and promised that somewhere behind the mists there was a rainbow.

Book excerpt: The reader will be drawn irresistably into the world of the author who presents a catalogue of abuse and cruelty suffered by herself as an innocent child, first at the hands of her alcoholic father, then by nuns, and later by a heartless husband who raped and beat her. This is compulsive reading. The book shows how the shadow of a father's cruelty can be cast over the whole life of a child--a child who, in this instance, never failed to turn the other cheek, or return love for cruelty and abuse, who manifested, in the end, the overriding power and strength of Christ who advocated love above all things. The book is a protest against domestic violence and institutionalised cruelty, and will hopefully stand as a beacon and warning against the violations suffered by so many Emelias whose heartfelt cries go unheard behind the closed or locked doors of our apparently respectable western civilization.

This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: The play Cat on a hot tin roof by Tennessee Williams is one of the most popular plays in the history of the American theatre. “That play comes closest to being both a work of art and a work of craft,” Williams wrote in his Memoirs. It is fact that Tennessee Williams liked “Cat on a hot tin roof” a little bit more than his other plays. He liked it even more than “A streetcar named desire” which is often referred to as his best and most famous play. You can argue about statement, Cat on a hot tin roof being his best work, but you will not be able to argue the success, the play had, away. First played on March 24, 1955 Cat on a hot tin roof won the Pulitzer Price as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award as the best American play of the season. It furthermore became Williams’s longest running show ever with 692 performances. What I will be dealing with subsequently is the most interesting aspect of the plays Broadway version. To be more precisely my topic will be the third act of the play, which is different compared to the original version. First I will give a brief summary of the original version of the third act. This will be followed by the naming of the similarities and the biggest differences between the two versions. Then, it is very important in my opinion to close, answering some upcoming questions about the two versions of act three. “Who had the idea to change the third act for the performance on Broadway?” and “Why did the changes take place and what were the ideas behind them?” I think with the help of my described approach I can cope with the task to compare the original and the Broadway version of Tennessee Williams Cat on a hot tin roof.
