Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi, established as the British protectorate of Nyasaland in 1891, gained its independence in 1964 and moved immediately into three decades of one-party rule. Since the mid-1990s, however, the country has held multi-party elections, as directed by its constitution, and President Bingu wa Mutharika is currently serving his second term. The fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi, now newly expanded and updated, covers a wide range of areas in Malawi history, including the rise and fall of state systems, religious and socio-political movements, the economy, environment, transportation, war, disease, and natural sciences. Author Owen J. M. Kalinga charts developments from pre-history to the post-Banda Malawi, from Tom Bokwito to James Sangala, and from the UMCA mission at Magomero to the second term of Bingu wa Mutharika's presidency, paying particular attention to the individuals, groups, communities, and forces that have molded this South African country. The dictionary itself contains over 1,000 cross-referenced entries on crucial aspects of Malawi history, and it is the most extensive single-volume reference work on Malawi available. In addition to the dictionary entries, Kalinga provides a chronology containing important dates and events and an informative bibliographical section organized by subject. The final part of the bibliography gives the reader a list of current and obsolete newspapers and periodicals related to Malawi, an ideal resource for further research. This newly updated edition is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Malawi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Andrew C. Ross was a Scottish missionary in Malawi between 1958 and 1965 and one of the founding members of the Malawi Congress Party. Like many other Scottish missionaries of the period, he deeply opposed the Central African Federation, and was a strong supporter of the emerging Malawian nationalist movement. When, following the declaration of a State of Emergency in March 1959, many of the political leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained, Andrew regularly visited those held at Kanjedza near Limbe - visits which helped to deepen both his friendship with them, and his commitment to their cause. Thus, when Orton Chirwa was released from detention later in 1959, and persuaded to become the temporary leader of the newly formed Malawi Congress Party, Andrew Ross was one of the first to join, becoming the proud holder of MCP card number six. This book covers the period 1875-1965 and includes a Foreword by Professor George Shepperson.

The focus of this book is about documenting the religious experience which was at the centre of founding the new nation of Malawi as we have come to know it. The book strikes a balance in covering issues pertaining to both mission activities and African agency. In many instances interesting pieces of evidence have been marshalled to corroborate or emphasize some of the conclusions reached.

Book excerpt: Malawi is one of the smallest and economically the poorest countries in the world. Yet, its impact has given it the name: The "Warm Heart of Africa." In this text, we briefly explore multiple facets of the Malawian people including who they are, their roots, characteristics, and some of their history, culture, environment, education, and healthcare. A landlocked country in the lower southeastern quadrant of Africa, Malawi evolved from British explorers and Scottish missionaries in the 19th century. Since 1994, it has had a democratic form of government. This textbook covers diverse subjects important to the country's history, culture, environment, education, and healthcare. From personal reflections to research studies, we read about the contributions of the US Peace Corps and Health Volunteers Overseas to Malawi's infrastructure, the importance of maize production to the existence of the Malawian people, unique academic programming through US-Malawi partnerships at the College of Medicine and Chancellor Law College, a potential model to improve the continuum of care for people with stroke, and success stories for children with clubfeet and learning disabilities. Creativity and entrepreneurship have enabled drone use for the delivery of medical supplies and to "map" various undeveloped quadrants of Malawi. As one of the first textbooks on Malawi, this one has the unique distinction of showing selected aspects of the country, some of its strengths, limitations, and challenges. Many of the articles were written by Malawian professionals, those working in Malawi, or with intimate knowledge of the country and their chosen topic. Many of the authors have had distinguished careers in academia with substantial research experience, and in the volunteer sector. Nova Science Publishers recognized the importance of Malawi to the African fabric and is on the forefront of sharing it with the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: Malawi Historical Information, Governance and Economic Development. A History, about Malawi Political Environment, the history of its Political struggle. A History Book on Malawi. Although African nations have made tremendous progress institutionalizing democracy, good governance and the rule of law, all too often these gains are eroded and result in a poor-governance trap. Of particular concern are leaders who win competitive elections primarily because of their seemingly uncompromising support of good governance, but upon attaining power steadily adopt autocratic rule. Unfortunately, this reversion is becoming all too common and one must wonder whether the African democratization project is in retreat, at least in some countries. Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika is an interesting case study of such a conversion. Elected through a fair and competitive electoral process in 2004 and reelected in 2009, he came to power with an exemplary record of public service and a solid educational background.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mario Antoine explores the origin and development of football in Malawi, previously known as Nyasland, in this book. Little is known about the humble beginnings of Malawi football and how two separate associations for Europeans and Africans drove its development. With other countries such as South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, and Mauritius also having separate associations, this was not uncommon. The author highlights how the British, who travelled overseas to work and as missionaries, played a critical role in introducing football to Nyasland and other countries. After the British colony attained independence in 1964 and changed its name to Malawi, the sport continued to grow in popularity. As the years went by, apart from selected matches, games were played on a regular basis among Southern Region clubs, which formed the Indian Sport Club in 1920, followed by the Goans Club in 1928. Some of the families that pioneered the formation of the European association known as Nyasaland Football Association still grace the shores of this land today.

Book excerpt: This third edition of the dictionary emphasizes what the editor calls the "new" Malawi, or post Banda era, in which Malawi is seeking to reintroduce democracy and reinforce its capitalist heritage. The alphabetically arranged entries include broad topics such as environment, as well as specific examples of items such as government agencies, like the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation. Other entries, such as ethnic groups, incorporate dozens of other terms with their own entries, i.e. Ngoni, Nyanja, and Yao. Kalinga, currently teaching history at North Carolina State U., has also taught at a variety of African universities, including the University of Malawi, and Crosby whose research interests lie in the economics of East Africa, is currently a high school teacher and administrator. c.
