Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this in-depth look at major league sports, Eric Leifer traces the growth and development of major leagues in baseball, football, basketball, and hockey, and predicts fundamental changes as the majors pursue international expansion. He shows how every past expansion of sports publics has been accompanied by significant changes in the way sporting competition is organized. With each reorganization, the majors have created teams closer in ability, bringing repetition to competition across time, only to expand and energize the public's search for differences between teams and for events that disrupt the repetitive flow. The phenomenal success of league sports, Leifer writes, rests on their ability to manufacture inequalities for fans to latch on to without jeopardizing the equalities that draw fans in. Leifer supports his theory with historical detail and statistical analysis. He examines the special concerns of league organizers in pursuing competitive balance and presents a detailed analysis of how large-city domination has been undermined in the modern era of Major League Baseball. Using games from the four major league sports, he then shows how fans can themselves affect the course of competition. In NFL football, for example, fans account for nearly all of the persisting inequality in team performance. The possibility of sustaining inequality among equals emerges from the cross-pressures that fans and leagues place on competition. With substantial data in hand, Leifer asks the essential question facing the leagues today: how can they sustain a situation that depends entirely on simultaneous equality and contention, one in which fan involvement may evaporate as soon as one team dominates? His answer has significant implications for the future of major league sports, both nationally and internationally.

Based on interviews with all major cast members plus crew and producers, it tells how writer/director David S. Ward battled the Hollywood system to turn his own love of the underdog Cleveland Indians into a classic screwball comedy. Learn how a tight-knit group of rising young stars (and a few wily veterans) had a blast pretending to play ball while creating several iconic characters. Filled with little-known facts and personal recollections about outtakes and inside jokes, batting practice and script changes, all-night location shoots, bar hopping and more, this is the ultimate guide to the film that reinvented the baseball movie and inspired a generation of belly laughs. Includes rare photos, storyboard illustrations, script excerpts, and more. With a foreword by Charlie Sheen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unique relationships between professional baseball teams and the unique ways professional baseball leagues are organized in North America with a primary focus on how proximity can and does impact consumer demand. Perhaps more than any other matter that arises in the business of baseball, proximity to other professional baseball teams is a concern that has uniquely shaped professional baseball leagues in North America. It is this particular component in how professional baseball leagues are organized that suggests building a proximity-based approach to studying the economics of minor league baseball. This book opens up new ways to study minor league baseball, specifically, and sports leagues more generally. So even as advanced technology has eliminated some of the need for fans to be in close proximity to the teams they love to follow, there is still a need to understand more completely how proximity matters can impact the way professional baseball leagues are structured and how that structure can ultimately impact the quality of the games that entertain sports fans everywhere. This book will be of interest to both sports economists and practitioners.

It’s her first night of freshman year at Alder University, a small Catholic college tucked away in the North Georgia mountains, and Bailey Sullivan is ready to be the girl she has always dreamed of becoming: a girl who loves a boy. She quickly meets Luke, a Southern charmer who gives her hope for a traditional future. But her often destructive and messy attempts at being straight are thwarted when she falls for her far-too-female suitemate, Noelle Parker, from whom she quickly becomes inseparable. Bailey must traverse the rocky terrain of her friendships, her freshman year of college, and her sexuality to discover not only whom she wants to pursue, but her own identity. For Bailey, learning to be true to herself means being brave enough to let go of the limits on love that are holding her back.

Book excerpt: With more than 115,000 psychology majors graduating each year, it is an understatement to say that competition is fierce. A decent GPA is not enough to make you stand out, whether you plan to go to graduate school or to enter the world of work. So, how can you gain a competitive edge? Like a good mentor, this book steers you to the experiences outside the classroom that will build your professional portfolio and show prospective employers and grad school programs that you have the skills they want -- researching, writing, public speaking, and statistical reasoning. Since professional research experience remains the most important avenue for fostering and demonstrating these skills, the book emphasizes ways to get involved in scholarly research, including finding research opportunities, conducting the research, going to scholarly conferences, and presenting findings in papers and talks. The only book devoted to undergraduate professional skills in psychology, this second edition provides a new overview of the kinds of research experiences you might get, no matter what type of college you are attending, as well as tips for writing your CV and personal statement, succeeding in classes, and thinking about options after college. In short, this consummate guide provides all the help you will need to get the most out of your psychology degree!

Book excerpt: Choosing a college major is one of the most important decisions students ever make, yet there is often confusion about picking the right discipline. Studies show that nearly two-thirds of all college freshman have not chosen a major, and nearly 60 percent of undergraduates change their major at least once resulting in lost time, money and productivity. To minimize the uncertainty in selecting the right major, Peterson's has partnered with industry leader, CPP the makers of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The MBTI was developed in the 1940s to make Carl Jung's theory of personality type understandable and useful in everyday life. This book will include access to a personality assessment to determine likes/dislikes and strengths/weaknesses to aid them in making sound decisions. The MBTI assessment, now priced at $9.95, coupled with the descriptions of more than 800 college majors, including course requirements, related majors, and related careers, will provide students an invaluable resource for making The Major Decision.

Book excerpt: What motivates professional athletes? Mike Trout's 12-year, $430 million contract or Cristiano Ronaldo's 82 million Twitter followers show fame and fortune are large driving forces. Players in Major League Lacrosse, however, are not as fortunate. The league's average attendance in 2018 was 3,619 people per game, and players held other jobs to make ends meet. In 2019, many high-profile MLL players left to start their own league, the Premier Lacrosse League, believing they could better raise the profile of the sport and their salaries. But what made other players and coaches stay in MLL? Why did several spectators remain superfans?Major League Life goes behind-the-scenes of all six MLL teams and explores why the league is so important to its players, coaches, and superfans. Whether it is the Massachusetts kids that went from fans in the stands to players on the field or the goalie from Japan that attended open tryouts for three years before landing a spot on the Denver roster, read why the league means so much to them when so many others don't even know it exists.
