Book excerpt: This report reviews the collection, availability and quality of system-level data and metadata on education from countries participating in the PISA for Development project: Cambodia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Senegal and Zambia. PISA for Development aims to increase low income countries' use of PISA assessments for monitoring progress towards national goals for improving education and for analysing the factors associated with student learning outcomes, particularly among poor and marginalised populations. The project also helps track progress towards the international education targets defined in the Education 2030 Framework for Action, which the international community adopted in 2015 as the strategy for achieving the Education Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The report suggests technically sound and viable options for improving data quality, completeness and international comparability in the six countries that are reviewed. It also provides insights into overcoming some of the challenges common to countries that participate in PISA for Development and to other middle income and low income countries.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this book were prepared during the second phase of a study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development to develop a set of International Indicators of Education Systems (INES). They were among the many studies presented at the General Assembly of the INES Project in Lugano (Switzerland), September 16-18, 1991. Taken together, these papers present what is currently known about the organization, development, measurement, and uses of international education indicators. Attention is given to the political contexts within which education indicators are used for informing policy-makers. The 18 chapters deal mainly with conceptual and analytical issues in the organization of education indicators. They are grouped thematically into four parts. Part I, "History and Definition of Indicators," presents a framework for the other contributions. Part II, "Development of Indicators," discusses issues in the development and implementation of different types of indicators. Part III, "Indicators of Outcomes of Education," is concerned with indicators of learning, student achievement, and other educational outcomes, such as labor market destinations. The five chapters in Part IV, "Interpreting Indicators for Policy," focus on the uses and abuses of reporting and interpreting international education indicators. Each chapter contains references. The Zambian economy has evolved from simple and fragmented agrarian activities at the turn of the 20th Century into a wide range of organized and regulated modern economic activities today. While the economy has largely revolved around the mining industry since the early 1920s when the extraction of copper and other mineral ores on the Copperbelt begun, there has been a gradual broadening of economic activities over time, with services now accounting for almost two-thirds of gross domestic product (GDP). This book shows that since colonial times, one of the persistent items on the economic development agenda in what is today known as Zambia has been the need to diversify the economy to reduce dependence on mining, in terms of foreign exchange earnings and public revenue. While the need to diversify the economy has been well-acknowledged by successive Zambia governments, including the current government, achieving this goal has proved to be elusive so far. By presenting a collection of well-researched and empirically supported chapters on the key areas of the Zambian economy, this volume gives readers a good sense of where the Zambian economy has come from, where it is at the moment, but also highlights the challenges and prospects for economic growth.

A total of 33 papers will be discussed at the plenary and three sessions of this conference named "Education Quality Policy and Implementation," "Innovation of Teaching and Learning Technology and Contemporary Trends," and "Teaching and Learning Technology Implementations and Outcomes." There are five poster presentations. The research volume on high education quality and its relevant disciplines has increased. We hope that the conference will contribute experiences and knowledge about policymaking and research worldwide.
