Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of the Scottish Church at the Reformation As the life of John Knox has been so Often written, I had some misgivings as to whether he should appear here for separate treatment, but it was impossible to exclude him - the greatest Of them all, and incalculably influencing all the others. I have not, however, in his case given a biography, but, as stated in the text, have selected certain incidents in his career, features in his character, and aspects of truth he emphasised, which are closely related to the work Of reform. I have also laid stress on his modern Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Scottish Reformation of 1560 is one of the most controversial events in Scottish history, and a turning point in the history of Britain and Europe. Yet its origins remain mysterious, buried under competing Catholic and Protestant versions of the story. Drawing on fresh research and recent scholarship, this book provides the first full narrative of the question. Going beyond the heroic certainties of John Knox, this book recaptures the lived experience of the early Reformation: a bewildering, dangerous and exhilarating period in which Scottish (and British) identity was remade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Superintendent of Fife, John Winram played a pivotal role in the reform of the Scottish Church. Charting his career within St Andrews priory from canon to subprior, Linda Dunbar examines the ambiguity of Winram's religious stance in the years before 1559 and argues that much of the difficulty in pinning down Winram's views stems from the mis-identification of John Knox's un-named reforming sub-prior with Winram. In fact, as the book shows, this early reformer was probably Winram's own sub-prior, Alexander Young. The various reforming influences on Winram, and the gradual change in his religious stance is charted, together with his robust attempts at Catholic reform with St Andrews and his profound effect upon John Knox during the siege of the castle. In 1559, Winram eventually decided to side with the Protestants. The book concludes with an analysis of the difficulties experienced by Winram and the preponderance of accusations against him which led to his final relinquishing of office in 1577. In his transition from a Catholic to a Protestant reformer, Winram's experience is typical of that of many of his contemporaries in Scotland and in Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and describes for the general reader the life and characteristics of the churches which flourished in Scotland between the Reformation and the mid-20th century. It will help both amateur and professional historians to understand the different denominations, and provides background to, and context for, their own research. Church influence on society has been particularly strong in Scotland and church records are a major source of pre-1844 information, but no recent book deals adequately with the church background. Here, the author explores how churches developed in, and interacted with, society. An overview of the churches of Scotland from the Reformation to 1960 is followed by a brief examination of each denomination including doctrinal issues, worship, organization, social and demographic factors, and mapping to show the geographical strengths of particular groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish history has been strangely neglected. This is the first scholarly biography of Robert Baillie, the minister, historian and participant in the revolutionary Covenanter movement. Baillie's life (1602 - 1662) spans the most important period in the history of Scotland as an independent state. The revolution began in 1636 when Charles I, Stuart King of England and Scotland, attempted to unite the reformed churches of his two kingdoms by promulgating a universal litany known as the Service Book. Baillie, though himself a conservative Royalist, joined the Scottish lords and ministers in signing the National Covenant, the document that led ultimately to the downfall of Charles and two wars with England. Despite his prominence in what became the Second Reformation of the Scottish church, Baillie managed to survive many purges and changes of regime, keeping detailed journals on the events of which he was part.
