Book Synopsis Make Haste, Slowly by : Michelle Ann Duff
Download or read book Make Haste, Slowly written by Michelle Ann Duff and published by mad8 Pub.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make Haste Slowly chronicles the grand prix motorcycle racing career of Canadian Mike Duff, the first North American and only Canadian ever to win a world championship grand prix race. Duff won three GP events, the 1964 250 Belgian GP at Spa Francorchamps, the 1965 125 Dutch GP at Assen The Netherlands and the 1965 250 Finnish GP at Imatra Finland. In 1964 Duff finished 3rd in the 350 world championship riding a private 350 AJS 7R single. In 1965 riding a factory Yamaha RD56 250 twin Duff finished 2nd in the 250 world championship. He never won a world title nor an Isle of Man TT, but he rode some of the most exotic racing machines ever built on race courses throughout the Grand Prix Continental Circus. He rode and conquered the intricacies of the Isle of Man TT and forever instilled its magic in his veins. He accelerated along glamorous racing circuits that are but names in a book to most, and he mixed it with the best of the world's motorcycle racers and often emerged victorious. During the 1960s, when the Japanese manufacturers began their dominance of GP racing, Duff had the best seat in the house to watch the titanic battles for first place between the stars of the time, riders like Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Jim Redman Giacomo Agostini, Luigi Taveri and Bill Ivy. Share these experiences with the author in minute detail from the perspective of Duff's seat aboard a factory Yamaha RD56 or RA97, a Matchless G50 or AJS 7R, or the legendary AJS Porcupine. A story of courage, disappointment and reward, Make Haste Slowly is a must read for all motorcycle racing fans. Duff has stood alone atop a winner's rostrum in silence to his country's national anthem then raised his arms to the tumultuous cheers of thousands all proclaiming an accomplishment that was singularly his. What four times world champion, New Zealander Hugh Anderson says about Make Haste, SLowly - A tale of human endeavour with a truly unique ending; I truly enjoyed it.

Download or read book Hannibal and Me written by Andreas Kluth and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dynamic and exciting way to understand success and failure, through the life of Hannibal, one of history's greatest generals. The life of Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who crossed the Alps with his army in 218 B.C.E., is the stuff of legend. And the epic choices he and his opponents made-on the battlefield and elsewhere in life-offer lessons about responding to our victories and our defeats that are as relevant today as they were more than 2,000 years ago. A big new idea book inspired by ancient history, Hannibal and Me explores the truths behind triumph and disaster in our lives by examining the decisions made by Hannibal and others, including Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Steve Jobs, Ernest Shackleton, and Paul Cézanne-men and women who learned from their mistakes. By showing why some people overcome failure and others succumb to it, and why some fall victim to success while others thrive on it, Hannibal and Me demonstrates how to recognize the seeds of success within our own failures and the threats of failure hidden in our successes. The result is a page-turning adventure tale, a compelling human drama, and an insightful guide to understanding behavior. This is essential reading for anyone who seeks to transform misfortune into success at work, at home, and in life.

Download or read book Cruddy written by Lynda Barry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-02-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a September night in 1971, a few days after getting busted for dropping two of the 127 hits of acid found in a friend's shoe, a sixteen-year-old who is grounded for a year curls up in the corner of her ratty bedroom, picks up a pen, and begins to write. Once upon a cruddy time on a cruddy street on the side of a cruddy hill in the cruddiest part of a crudded-out town in a cruddy state, country, world, solar system, universe. The cruddy girl named Roberta was writing the cruddy book of her cruddy life and the name of the book was called Cruddy. Now the truth can finally be revealed about the mysterious day long ago when the authorities found a child, calmly walking in the boiling desert, covered with blood. She could not give the authorities any information about why she was the only survivor and everyone else was lying around in hacked-up pieces. Roberta Rohbeson, 1971. Her overblown, drug-induced teenage rant against a world bounded by "the cruddy top bedroom of a cruddy rental house on a very cruddy mud road behind cruddy Black Cat Lumber" soon becomes a detailed account of another story. It is a story about which Roberta has kept silent for five years, until, under the influence of a pale hippie called the Turtle and a drug called Creeper, her tale giddily unspools... Roberta Rohbeson, 1967. The world of Roberta, age eleven, is terrifyingly unbounded, a one-way cross-country road trip fueled by revenge and by greed, a violent, hallucinatory, sometimes funny, more often horrific year of killings, betrayals, arson, and a sinister set of butcher knives, each with its own name. Welcome to Cruddy, Lynda Barry's masterful tale of the two intertwined narratives set five years -- an eternity -- apart, which form the backbone of Roberta's life. Cruddy is a wild ride indeed, a fairy tale-cum-low-budget horror movie populated by a cast of characters that will remain vivid in the reader's mind long after the final page: Roberta's father, a dangerous alcoholic and out-of-work meat cutter in search of his swindled inheritance; the frightening owners of the Knocking Hammer Bar and sometime slaughterhouse; and two charming but quite mad escapees from the Barbara V. Herrmann Home for Adolescent Rest. Written with a teenager's eye for freakish detail and a nervous ability to make the most horrible scenes seem hilarious, Roberta's two stories -- part Easy Rider and part bipolar Wizard of Oz -- painfully but inevitably converge in a surprising denouement in a nightmarish Dreamland in the Nevada desert. By turns terrifying, darkly funny, and resonant with humanity, propelled by all the narrative power of a superior thriller and burnished by the author's pitch-perfect ear for dialogue, Cruddy is a stunning achievement.
Book Synopsis An Example for All the Land by : Kate Masur
Download or read book An Example for All the Land written by Kate Masur and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Example for All the Land reveals Washington, D.C. as a laboratory for social policy in the era of emancipation and the Civil War. In this panoramic study, Kate Masur provides a nuanced account of African Americans' grassroots activism, municipal politics, and the U.S. Congress. She tells the provocative story of how black men's right to vote transformed local affairs, and how, in short order, city reformers made that right virtually meaningless. Bringing the question of equality to the forefront of Reconstruction scholarship, this widely praised study explores how concerns about public and private space, civilization, and dependency informed the period's debate over rights and citizenship.

Download or read book Personal Account written by Tony Comper and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After nearly four decades at Bank of Montreal, former President and CEO Tony Comper shares leadership lessons from his experience at the helm of one of the world’s largest financial institutions. Anthony “Tony” Comper likes to say that he can sum up his remarkable career in Canadian banking in 25 stories. In a business often filled with big personalities and memorable characters, Tony’s motto is Festina Lente — make haste slowly. In Personal Account: 25 Tales about Leadership, Learning, and Legacy from a Lifetime at Bank of Montreal, Comper chronicles how he guided the bank’s software evolution on real-time banking and the introduction of ABMs. He also saw BMO evolve from traditional lender to facilitator in the market, partnering with businesses to create a more vibrant source of capital. That innovation included Tony’s role in integrating women and new Canadians into BMO while fighting anti-Semitism in the community. He was also critical in creating new banking models for the Indigenous community. A first-person analysis of the major transitions in his almost four decades at the bank. A memoir of turbulent, challenging times. An examination of surviving the most severe financial shocks without jeopardizing the nation’s financial stability. Personal Account is equal parts warm memoir, teaching lesson, and a reminder of the value of legacy.
Book Synopsis Festina lente: make haste slowly by : Ana Cristina Leonardos
Download or read book Festina lente: make haste slowly written by Ana Cristina Leonardos and published by Editora Autografia. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not all hurry leads to hastiness. Not all slowness is synonymous with tardiness. Because of all the hustle and bustle, sometimes we pass through life without even looking it in the face. And sometimes if we don’t hurry we let life pass by, and we get stuck on the treadmill, among abandoned dreams, renounced potential, desires swallowed by time. It’s what Ana Cristina Leonardos and Martha Estima Scodro show with great sensitivity in Festina Lente — Make Haste Slowly. More than crafting a beautiful study of the female soul, Martha and Ana Cristina reveal here that which is most human on the surface of finiteness, in the construction of identities, and in the transience of feelings. With provocations that generate conversations, and conversations that generate still more provocations, Ana Cristina and Martha invite their interviewees to dive into a delicate process of intimate excavation, and they inquire of them: “What is the most important question you have asked yourself over the last year, and why is it important?”. Inspired by this and other doubts of growing importance, the authors move through desires, fears, guilt, and obligations that fill the thoughts of these women. Thus, Ana Cristina Leonardos and Martha Estima Scodro have written a book that is critically urgent, and they open windows that give us glimpses of amazing discoveries, dormant vigor, unspeakable losses, delays transformed into steps, and invitations to soar amongst our widest horizons within.
