Book excerpt: The research objectives were to examine the effect of soil nutrient status on the growth rate, reproductive development, yield components and yield of maize in a long-term trial. On the Experimental Farm of the University of Pretoria, treatments selected for this investigation were O (control), PK (nitrogen deficient), NK (phosphorus deficient), NP (potassium deficient), NPK (balanced nutrient), and WNPKM (mixture of balanced nutrient and manure). Growth analyses were performed, embryonic tassel and ear development recorded, developmental stages and rate of tasseling and silking were monitored while yield components were determined at maturity. The balanced nutrient treatment (WNPKM) plants showed the highest growth rate and produced the highest biomass while the P and K deficient treatments resulted in low growth rates and low biomass. The PK and NPK treatments were intermediate in terms of growth rate and biomass production. The WNPKM, NPK and PK treatments exhibited a high net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate (CGR), illustrating that an adequate supply of N, P and K is required for high growth rate and biomass production. Plants in the WNPKM plots exhibited early tassel initiation and ear differentiation and larger reproductive organs. Reproductive development in the PK treatment was ahead of those of the NP and NPK treatments. Nutrient stress delayed initiation and differentiation resulting in smaller reproductive organs. A linear relationship was found between leaf area indices (LAI) and the sizes of the reproductive structures. The higher the LAI the larger the size of the reproductive structures. Emergence of inflorescences was timely in plants exposed to the balanced nutrient but delayed in nutrient deficient treatments. Grain yield and the yield components were positively affected by the balanced nutrient treatment while the nutrient stress treatments reduced the yield. ©2008, University of Pretoria. Nitrogen and mulch application, but not irrigation, significantly affect most of the parameters in this study. Nitrogen application increased plant height, crop growth rate, leaf area index, nutrient uptake, grain yield and dry matter production. It lowered leaf area ratio and barrenness of maize ears and induced early silking in maize. As aresult of luxuriant growth, nitrogen application helped reduce the maximum soil temperature and increased the water utilization by maize plants. Rice straw was a better mulching materials than maize stover. Mulch, particularly rice straw, improved IDM accumulation, plant heit, leaf developement, grain yield and nitrogen uptake. The effectiveness of rice mulch in conserving soil moisture and maintaining a low maximum soil temperature especially when soil moisture became low was observed. Residual of nitrogen application and mulching treatment were detected but the response depend on the test crop species used. Maize is the major crop in China both in terms of yield and acreage. In 2012, worldwide maize production was about 840 million tons. Maize has long been a staple food of most of the global population (particularly in South America and Africa) and a key nutrient resource for animal feed and for food industrial materials. Maize belts vary from the latitude 58° north to the latitude 40° south, and maize ripens every month of the year. Abiotic and biotic stresses are common in maize belts worldwide. Abiotic stresses (chiefly drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures), together with biotic stresses (primarily fungi, viruses, and pests), negatively affect maize growth, development, production and productivity. In the recent past, intense droughts, waterlogging, and extreme temperatures have relentlessly affected maize growth and yield. In China, 60% of the maize planting area is prone to drought, and the resultant yield loss is 20%–30% per year; in India, 25%–30% of the maize yield is lost as a result of waterlogging each year. The biotic stresses on maize are chiefly pathogens (fungal, bacterial, and viral), and the consequential syndromes, like ear/stalk rot, rough dwarf disease, and northern leaf blight, are widespread and result in grave damage. Roughly 10% of the global maize yield is lost each year as a result of biotic stresses. For example, the European corn borer [ECB, Ostrinianubilalis (Hübner)] causes yield losses of up to 2000 million dollars annually in the USA alone in the northern regions of China, the maize yield loss reaches 50% during years when maize badly affected by northern leaf blight. In addition, abiotic and biotic stresses time and again are present at the same time and rigorously influence maize production. To fulfill requirements of each maize-growing situation and to tackle the above mentions stresses in an effective way sensibly designed multidisciplinary strategy for developing suitable varieties for each of these stresses has been attempted during the last decade. Genomics is a field of supreme significance for elucidating the genetic architecture of complex quantitative traits and characterizing germplasm collections to achieve precise and specific manipulation of desirable alleles/genes. Advances in genotyping technologies and high throughput phenomics approaches have resulted in accelerated crop improvement like genomic selection, speed breeding, particularly in maize. Molecular breeding tools like collaborating all omics, has led to the development of maize genotypes having higher yields, improved quality and resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. Book excerpt: A field experiment was conducted at farmer’s field of Anandapur, Mangalpur VDC-3, Chitwan, Nepal during winter season from September 2006 to February 2007 to study the effects of nitrogen and plant population on maize. Fifteen treatment combinations consisting of five levels of nitrogen: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha and three levels of plant population; 55555 plants/ha (60 cm × 30 cm spacing), 66666 plants/ha (60 cm × 25 cm spacing) and 83333 plants/ha (60 cm × 20 cm spacing) were tested in factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. “Rampur Composite” variety of maize was planted on sandy silt loam and strongly acidic soil having medium in total nitrogen (0.123%), high in soil available phosphorous (77.56 kg/ha) and low in soil available potassium (23.25 kg/ha). The research findings revealed that each level of nitrogen significantly increased grain yield upto 200 kg N/ha. The grain yield (6514.48 kg/ha) obtained under 200 kg N/ha was significantly higher than that of 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha. The percent increment in yield due to application of 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N/ha was to the extent of 62.11, 104.74, 135.68 and 154.74%, respectively over control. Significant effect on grain yield due to different levels of plant population was observed. The grain yield (5113.46 kg/ha) obtained under 66666 plants/ha was statistically at par with that under 83333 plants/ha, but significantly superior over that under 55555 plants/ha. The interaction between different nitrogen levels and plant densities on grain yield showed that the highest grain yield (6925.79 kg/ha) was obtained under treatment of 200 kg N/ha + 66666 plants/ha. The yield attributes namely number of cobs/plant, cob length, cob diameter, number of grain rows/cob and 1000 seed weight significantly increased with increasing N levels and decreasing plant population levels. The number of barren plants/ha decreased with increasing levels of N but increased with increasing levels of plant population. The net return (Rs. 42188.74/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (1.67) obtained under 200 kg N/ha were significantly highest than that obtained under other levels of nitrogen (150, 100, 50 and 0 kg N/ha). The plant population of 66666 plants/ha gave the highest net returns (Rs. 25812.28) which was 10.19 and 49.64% higher than that of 83333 plants/ha and 55555 plants/ha, respectively. The benefit: cost ratio (1.44) obtained under 66666 plants/ha was significantly higher than that of 55555 and 83333 plants/ha. The interaction between different nitrogen levels and plant densities on economics of maize production showed that significantly highest net return (Rs.48606.98) and B:C ratio (1.78) were under treatment of 200 kg N/ha + 66666 plants/ha. The highest grain yield and maximum profit were obtained when maize variety “Rampur Composite” was planted with 200 kg N/ha and plant population level of 66666 plants/ha (60 cm × 25 cm spacing).
