Book excerpt: A discussion is presented on the evaporated propellant (EP) and main tank injection (MTI) systems for main propellant tank pressurization. Results of testing with liquid H, liquid N, UDMH, NTO (N2O4), N2H4, 50-50 UDMH/N2H4, RP-1, BrF5, ClF3 and B5H9 are presented. The MTI method of tank pressurization is believed feasible for the following combinations: NTO into UDMH; NTO into 50-50 UDMH/N2H4; UDMH into NTO; 50-50 UDMH/N2H4 into NTO; N2H4 into NTO; ClF3 into B5H9. The EP method appears practical for liquid H, liquid O and NTO, while the MTI method appears practical for the combination NTO and 50-50 UDMH/N2H4, and NTO and UDMH in either the fuel or oxidizer tank.

Book excerpt: Focus of this study is the pressurization system of a cryogenic liquid propellant tank for the launcher application. Objective of the pressurization system is to provide the required pressure evolution in the propellant tank for a proper operation of the engine. The motivation of this study is an improved understanding of the complex fluid-dynamic and thermodynamic phenomena during the active-pressurization process of cryogenic propellants in order to optimize the on-board pressurant gas mass. Therefore ground experiments, numerical simulations and analytical considerations were performed for the investigation of the initial active-pressurization phase. For the performed experiments, liquid nitrogen was used as cryogenic model propellant, which was actively pressurized under normal gravity conditions up to different final tank pressures. As pressurant gases, gaseous nitrogen and gaseous helium were used with different inlet temperatures. For the numerical analyses the commercial CFD program Flow-3D, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation solver, was used.

Book excerpt: A liquid rocket engine main tank injection (MTI) pressurization system which employs a chemical method of propellant tank pressurization, is studied. The process is initiated by injecting a small quantity of hypergolic reagent into the main propellant tank. The technical approach has been to study the important factors influencing the pressurization process by laboratory experiments and analytically determine system operating characteristics to evaluate various possible designs. Several engineering studies were completed initially to establish the pertinent design requirements of such a system, identify desirable configurations, and determine the most promising applications. Verification of the theoretical performance and development of a practical system was accomplished by a considerable amount of testing on 5 1/3-cu ft thick wall spherical tanks and subsequent demonstration in a 2,000-gal. full-scale flight-type ground test article. The research fixture was fabricated to investigate the actual reaction process and de develop components and operating procedures on a small-scale basis at pressures up to 200 psia.
