Drawing on decades of experience as a naval officer, researcher, and university lecturer, Mahan develops his theory of sea power in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in this popular and important text. Despite a lack of primary sources, The Influence of Sea Power would prove essential to the expansion of European and American imperialism through the use of naval might and has been cited as one of the most influential works of the nineteenth century. “The history of Sea Power is largely, though by no means solely, a narrative of contests between nations, of mutual rivalries, of violence frequently culminating in war.” For Alfred Thayer Mahan, there was no greater indicator of national might throughout history than control of the planet’s oceans. In this detailed study of the subject, drawn from years of research and lectures given at the Naval War College in Rhode Island, Mahan traces the influence of sea power on such conflicts as the English Revolution and the Seven Years’ War to argue that supremacy of the seas coincides with global commercial and political dominance throughout history. Immediately successful, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History would justify the expansion of imperialism as well as shape the naval arms race between Great Britain and Germany in the years preceding the First World War. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Alfred Thayer Mahan’s The Influence of Sea Power Upon History is a classic of naval strategic scholarship reimagined for modern readers.

He served in the Navy for nearly forty years and fought in the American Civil War. In addition, he was president of the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and wrote influential naval history and strategy books. His most popular work The Influence of Sea Power upon History (1890) established the modern US Navy doctrine of maritime predominance: the higher the naval power of a country, the greater its global impact. His ideas of sea power influenced the organization of naval forces in many countries. From Sail to Stream, Mahan's autobiography, includes his personal life story as well as the history of US sea power in the 19th and early 20th century.

Book excerpt: The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 is an influential treatise on naval warfare written in 1890 by Alfred Thayer Mahan. It details the role of sea power throughout history and discusses the various factors needed to support a strong navy.Alfred Thayer Mahan (September 27, 1840 - December 1, 1914) was a United States naval officer and historian, whom John Keegan called "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century." His book The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 (1890) won immediate recognition, especially in Europe, and with its successor, The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793-1812 (1892), made him world-famous and perhaps the most influential American author of the nineteenth century.Mahan was born on September 27, 1840, at West Point, New York, to Dennis Hart Mahan (a professor at the United States Military Academy) and Mary Helena Okill Mahan (1815-1893), daughter of John Okill and Mary Jay (daughter of Sir James Jay). Mahan's middle name honors "the father of West Point", Sylvanus Thayer. Mahan attended Saint James School, an Episcopal college preparatory academy in western Maryland. He then studied at Columbia for two years, where he was a member of the Philolexian Society debating club. Against the better judgment of his father, Mahan then entered the Naval Academy, where he graduated second in his class in 1859.Commissioned as a lieutenant in 1861, Mahan served the Union in the American Civil War as an officer on USS Worcester, Congress, Pocahontas, and James Adger, and as an instructor at the Naval Academy. In 1865, he was promoted to lieutenant commander, and then to commander (1872), and captain (1885). As commander of the USS Wachusett he was stationed at Callao, Peru, protecting US interests during the final stages of the War of the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840 - 1914) was a United States Navy flag officer, geostrategist, and historian, termed "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century." His idea on "sea power" based on the concept that countries with greater naval power will have greater worldwide impact were famously presented in The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 in 1890. The concepts expressed in this book had an enormous influence in shaping the strategic thought of navies worldwide, in particular the United States, Germany, Japan and Britain, ultimately causing the United States and European naval arms race of the 1890s. Mahan retired from the United States Navy in 1896 but was subsequently recalled to service. In this work The Interest of America in Sea Power, Present and Future, Mahan seeks to evoke his fellow Americans to a realisation of their maritime responsibilities. This early work by Alfred Thayer Mahan was originally published in 1897 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography.
