Download or read book Magyarázni written by Helen Hajnoczky and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "magyarázni" (pronounced MAUDE-yar-az-knee) means "to explain" in Hungarian, but translates literally as "make it Hungarian." This faux-Hungarian language primer, written in direct address, invites readers to experience what it's like to be "made Hungarian" by growing up with a parent who immigrated to North America as a refugee. In forty-five folk-art visual poems each paired with a written poem, Hajnoczky reveals the beauty and tension of first-generation cultural identity. Helen Hajnoczky's first book of poetry was Poets and Killers: A Life in Advertising (Snare, 2010). Her work has appeared in poetry anthologies, magazines, and chapbooks. She lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Book Synopsis Measuring Oral Proficiency Through Paired-task Performance by : Ildikó Csépes
Download or read book Measuring Oral Proficiency Through Paired-task Performance written by Ildikó Csépes and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to provide a theoretical overview of examining candidates' oral abilities in different examination formats. In particular, it explores specific partner effects on discourse outcomes and proficiency ratings in the framework of paired-task performance. Two investigations, both set in the context of a proposed Hungarian school leaving examination in English, were carried out in order to contribute to a better understanding of the assumed impact of the chosen variables. Study One investigates discourse differences between examiner-to-examinee interaction and peer-to-peer interaction. Study Two explores the impact of the peer partner's proficiency. The results show that partner effects related to this variable cannot be predicted as either harmful or beneficial since no statistically significant difference was found between 30 candidates' scores in different examination conditions.

Book Synopsis Sounding Authentic by : Joshua S. Walden
Download or read book Sounding Authentic written by Joshua S. Walden and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sounding Authentic considers the intersecting influences of nationalism, modernism, and technological innovation on representations of ethnic and national identities in twentieth-century art music. Author Joshua S. Walden discusses these forces through the prism of what he terms the "rural miniature": short violin and piano pieces based on folk song and dance styles. This genre, mostly inspired by the folk music of Hungary, the Jewish diaspora, and Spain, was featured frequently on recordings and performance programs in the early twentieth century. Furthermore, Sounding Authentic shows how the music of urban Romany ensembles developed into nineteenth-century repertoire of virtuosic works in the style hongrois before ultimately influencing composers of rural miniatures. Walden persuasively demonstrates how rural miniatures represented folk and rural cultures in a manner that was perceived as authentic, even while they involved significant modification of the original sources. He also links them to the impulse toward realism in developing technologies of photography, film, and sound recording. Sounding Authentic examines the complex ways the rural miniature was used by makers of nationalist agendas, who sought folkloric authenticity as a basis for the construction of ethnic and national identities. The book also considers the genre's reception in European diaspora communities in America where it evoked and transformed memories of life before immigration, and traces how many rural miniatures were assimilated to the styles of American popular song and swing. Scholars interested in musicology, ethnography, the history of violin performance, twentieth-century European art music, the culture of the Jewish Diaspora and more will find Sounding Authentic an essential addition to their library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the world in which philosophers need to work and on which they ought to reflect starts changing rapidly, asking questions about the nature of her discipline becomes especially pressing for the philosopher. When new scholarly disciplines pop up radically restructuring the academic world, problems concerning the place of philosophy among other disciplines need to be addressed. When new kinds of problems enter the world and the public consciousness, philosophers have to be able to tell whether their conceptual tools make them suitable to deal with them. And when the very purpose and nature of academic research and scholarship transforms due to technological, social, and economical advancements, philosophy has to redefine its place in academia and society.

Sőt, testi tudatosságunk és gyakorlatunk olyan átirányítását is, amely eltávolít a reklámiparunkat átható, pusztán szomatikus sikert hirdető, elnyomó módon szűk és ártalmas sztereotípiáktól. Ehelyett a szómaesztétika a szomatikus értékek és kiteljesülésük jóval érdemlegesebb vízióira és elérésük jobb módszereire koncentrál, és azokat törekszik feltárni.”
