Book excerpt: New Techniques for Management of 'Inoperable' Gliomas radically challenges the assumption that certain gliomas cannot be removed with modern techniques, contesting stereotypical thinking and establishing new paradigms in the field. Gliomas are primary brain tumors which are often fatal. Recent data has demonstrated that despite the fact that surgery cannot cure gliomas, patient survival is substantially improved by removing as much of the tumor as possible. This fact has raised the imperative that neurologists try to improve techniques to bring surgical resection to as many patients as possible. This book brings new insights and technologies to the forefront, giving hope to patients. - Provides the first comprehensive book to discuss techniques for removing gliomas that are traditionally deemed 'inoperable' - Presents a great reference tool that challenges stereotypical thinking by offering techniques by innovative surgeons - Includes chapters that are organized by different glioma types and surgery/techniques

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based health policy. The resulting clinical trials and health services research studies require instruments to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. However, the over-abundance of competing measurement scales can make choosing a measure difficult at best. Measuring Health provides in-depth reviews of over 100 of the leading health measurement tools and serves as a guide for choosing among them.LNow in its third edition, this book provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for the field. This latest edition updates the information on each of the measures previously reviewed, and includes a complete new chapter on anxiety measurement to accompany the one on depression. It has also added new instruments to those previously reviewed in each of the chapters in the book.LChapters cover measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, anxiety, depression, mental status testing, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments reviewed, followed by a detailed description of each method, covering its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity and, where possible, shows a copy of the actual scale. To ensure accuracy of the information, each review has been approved by the original author of each instrument or by an acknowledged expert.

Book excerpt: The complete reference of biological bases for psychopathology at any age Developmental Psychopathology is a four-volume compendium of the most complete and current research on every aspect of the field. Volume Two: Developmental Neuroscience focuses on the biological basis of psychopathology at each life stage, from nutritional deficiencies to genetics to functional brain development to evolutionary perspectives and more. Now in its third edition, this comprehensive reference has been fully updated to better reflect the current state of the field, and detail the newest findings made possible by advances in technology and neuroscience. Contributions from expert researchers and clinicians provide insight into brain development, molecular genetics methods, neurogenics approaches to pathway mapping, structural neuroimaging, and much more, including targeted discussions of specific disorders. Advances in developmental psychopathology have burgeoned since the 2006 publication of the second edition, and keeping up on the latest findings in multiple avenues of investigation can be burdensome to the busy professional. This series solves the problem by collecting the information into one place, with a logical organization designed for easy reference. Consider evolutionary perspectives in developmental psychopathology Explore typical and atypical brain development across the life span Examine the latest findings on stress, schizophrenia, anxiety, and more Learn how genetics are related to psychopathology at different life stages The complexity of a field as diverse as developmental psychopathology deepens with each emerging theory, especially with consideration of the rapid pace of neuroscience advancement and genetic discovery. Developmental Psychopathology Volume Two: Developmental Neuroscience provides an invaluable resource by compiling the latest information into a cohesive, broad-reaching reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 15. This monograph contains 34 communications presented at the Third International Symposium on the Use of Artificial Satellites for Geodesy in 1971, and 4 invited papers on subjects that complement the others and provide continuity. All contributions represent the most recent findings in the theoretical and applied fields of satellite geodesy, including new instrumentation (satellite sensors and ground equipment) of potential use in satellite geodesy. The two preceding symposiums were held at Washington, D.C., in 1962 and at Athens, Greece, in 1965. The Proceedings of the first were published by North-Holland Publishing Company, Amsterdam, in 1963, and the Proceedings of the second by the National Technical University, Athens, in 1967. The prime mover behind both was George Veis, and his continuing dedication to this subject was in large measure responsible for scheduling this third symposium.
