Book Synopsis Music by Pedro de Cristo (c. 1550-1618) by : Owen Rees
Download or read book Music by Pedro de Cristo (c. 1550-1618) written by Owen Rees and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A facsimile of a previously unpublished musical manuscript. Among the major composers of the Portuguese Golden Age, Pedro de Cristo (c.1550-1618) is at present the least familiar to scholars and performers. This situation is largely due to the fact that his music was not published during his lifetime, but is preserved rather in manuscripts originating (for the most part) at the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where he spent most of his life. The present work is an edition of the contents on one of these manuscripts -- MM 33 in Coimbra University Library -- which was copied by Pedro de Cristo himself towards the end of the sixteenth-century. It is an invaluable source of authoritative readings of his music: principally Latin motets for four or five voices. Also 198 includes musical examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music of Latin America and the Caribbean, Second Edition is a comprehensive textbook for undergraduate students, which covers all major facets of Latin American music, finding a balance between important themes and illustrative examples. This book is about enjoying the music itself and provides a lively, challenging discussion complemented by stimulating musical examples couched in an appropriate cultural and historical context—the music is a specific response to the era from which it emerges, evolving from common roots to a wide variety of musical traditions. Music of Latin America and the Caribbean aims to develop an understanding of Latin American civilization and its relation to other cultures. NEW to this edition A new chapter overviewing all seven Central American countries An expansion of the chapter on the English- and French-speaking Caribbean An added chapter on transnational genres An end-of-book glossary featuring bolded terms within the text A companion website with over 50 streamed or linked audio tracks keyed to Listening Examples found in the text, in addition to other student and instructors’ resources Bibliographic suggestions at the end of each chapter, highlighting resources for further reading, listening, and viewing Organized along thematic, historical, and geographical lines, Music of Latin America and the Caribbean implores students to appreciate the unique and varied contributions of other cultures while realizing the ways non-Western cultures have influenced Western musical heritage. With focused discussions on genres and styles, musical instruments, important rituals, and the composers and performers responsible for its evolution, the author employs a broad view of Latin American music: every country in Latin America and the Caribbean shares a common history, and thus, a similar musical tradition.

Book Synopsis Cori Spezzati: Volume 1, The Development of Sacred Polychoral Music to the Time of Schutz by : Anthony F. Carver
Download or read book Cori Spezzati: Volume 1, The Development of Sacred Polychoral Music to the Time of Schutz written by Anthony F. Carver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-10-27 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cori Spezzati deals with polychoral church music from its beginnings in the first few decades of the sixteenth century to its climax in the work of Giovanni Gabrieli and Heinrich Schutz. In polychoral music the singers, sometimes with instrumentalists also, were split into two (or more) groups that often engaged in lively dialogue and joined in majestic tutti climaxes. The book draws on contemporary descriptions of the idiom, especially from the writings of Vicentino and Zarlino, but concentrates in the main on musical analysis, showing how antiphonal chanting (such as that of the psalms), dialogue and canon influenced the phenomenon. Polychoral music has often been considered synonymous not only with Venetian music, but with impressive pomp. Anthony Carver's study shows that it was cultivated by many composers outside Venice - in Rome, all over northern Italy, in Catholic and Protestant areas of Germany, in Spain and the New World - and that it was as capable of quiet devotion or mannerist expressionism as of outgoing pomp. Perhaps most important, music by several major composers about which there is still surprisingly little in the literature is treated in depth: the Gabrielis, Lasso, Palestrina, Victoria, and several German masters. The book is illustrated with many musical examples. A companion volume offers an anthology of seventeen complete pieces, most of which are analysed in the text of Volume I.
