La première utilisant du sodium, est menée au sein de la collaboration VKS (Von Karman Sodium). Celle-ci a permis d'observer l'effet dynamo, à savoir la conversion d'une part de l'énergie cinétique du fluide en énergie magnétique. Nous avons montré, qu'en fonction des conditions de forçage de l'écoulement, une dynamo statistiquement stationnaire, ou au contraire, des régimes dynamiques du champ magnétique, peuvent être engendrés. En particulier, des renversements de polarité similaires à ceux du champ magnétique terrestre ont été observés. Parallèlement, la seconde expérience avec du Gallium a été développée pour étudier les effets d'induction d'un champ magnétique appliqué par des écoulements turbulents plus homogènes et isotropes que celui de l'expérience VKS et pour mettre au point des sondes de mesure de différence de potentiel électrique.
