Book excerpt: This thesis presents the theoretical investigation of physical properties of pure and transition metal doped semiconductor nanostructures. First we study optical and energy (the density of states) spectra for Cd[subscript]mSe[subscript]m clusters of various sizes and shapes, such as spheres, cubes, nanorods, and nanotubes. This work requires a careful computational analysis where a proper exchange-correlation functional has to be chosen to fit the experimental data. The next part of the thesis deals with the magnetic properties of manganese doped CdSe, ZnSe, ZnS, and CdS quantum dots (QDs). We theoretically explain the effect of dual luminescence and show that in the case with CdSe quantum dots the luminescence becomes tunable by a QD size. We also study the concentration dependence of magnetic order and optical transitions in Mn doped CdSe nanocrystals. Room temperature d[superscript]0 ferromagnetism is studied in ZnS quantum dots and nanowires in Chapter 4. To find the magnetization of the medium and large size nanocrystals we introduce the surface-bulk (SB) model. We show that the condensation of Zn vacancies into a single droplet takes place which leads to the week d[superscript]0 ferromagnetism in ZnS nanocrystals. In the last Chapter we study electronic, optical, and charge transport properties of two new holey 2D materials, ELH-g-C2N-H and ELH-g-C2N-Br with hydrogen and bromine side-groups, respectively. Since the two 2D crystals under study have not been synthesized yet, we provide the stability analysis and prove that the calculated crystal structures correspond to the global energy minimum criterion.

Book excerpt: Optical methods for investigating semiconductors and the theoretical description of optical processes have always been an important part of semiconductor physics. Only the emphasis placed on different materials changes with time. Here, a large number of papers are devoted to quantum dots, presenting the theory, spectroscopic investigation and methods of producing such structures. Another major part of the book reflects the growing interest in diluted semiconductors and II-IV nanosystems in general. There are also discussions of the fascinating field of photonic crystals. `Classical' low dimensional systems, such as GsAs/GaAlAs quantum wells and heterostructures, still make up a significant part of the results presented, and they also serve as model systems for new phenomena. New materials are being sought, and new experimental techniques are coming on stream, in particular the combination of different spectroscopic modalities.

Book excerpt: Plasmonic nanostructure materials have been widely investigated recently because of their considerable potential for applications in biological and chemical sensors, nano-optical devices and photothermal therapy. Compared to metal nanocrystals (NCs), doped semiconductor NCs with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from near-infrared (NIR) mid-infrared (MIR) region bring more opportunities to the applications of plasmonics. Magnetoplasmonic nanostructures which could be utilized in multifunctional devices also have attracted attention due to the combination of plasmonic and magnetic properties and the manipulation of light with external magnetic fields. In this research, indium oxide (In2O3) as a typical n-type semiconductor with high mobility and carrier concentration is selected as the host lattice for doping, and molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) which are transition metal elements from the same group as dopants. Colloidal molybdenum-doped indium oxide (IMO) NCs and tungsten-doped indium oxide (IWO) NCs with varying doping concentrations have been successfully synthesized, and their plasmonic and magneto-optical properties have been explored. Similarities and differences between IMO NCs and IWO NCs were discussed. Both IMO and IWO NCs have shown good tunability of plasmon resonance in the MIR range approximately from 0.22 eV to 0.34 eV. 9.2 % IMO NCs show the strongest LSPR at 0.34 eV and the maximum free electron concentration of 1.1x1020 cm-3, and 1.5 % IWO NCs exhibit the strongest LSPR at 0.33 eV with the free electron concentration of 0.94x1020 cm-3. The magneto-optical properties were studied by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. The variable-temperature-variable-field MCD spectra that coincide with the band gap absorption, indicate the excitonic splitting in the NCs. A robust MCD intensity at room temperature suggests intrinsic plasmon-exciton coupling and carrier polarization induced by plasmon, which might be phonon-mediated. A decrease in MCD signal with temperature and the saturation-like field dependence of MCD intensity for IMO and IWO NCs may related to the different oxidation states of the dopant ions since the reduced 5+ oxidation states can exhibit the Curie-type paramagnetism. IMO and IWO NCs show the coupling between exciton and plasmon in a single-phase which opens a possibility for their application in electronics and photonics. Moreover, magnetoplasmonic modes provide a new degree of freedom for controlling carrier polarization at room temperature in practical photonic, optoelectronic and quantum-information processing devices.

Book excerpt: Calculations were performed of the formation energies of transition metal carbides and silicides in order to evaluate the thermodynamic limitations to incorporation of these elements as dopants in Silicon carbide. The prospects of SiC as a host for dilute magnetic semiconductor applications by doping with Cr and Mn were evaluated. Calculations were performed for MnN and Mn3N2 compounds and a model developed for explaining their anti ferromagnetic order in terms of exchange interactions between near neighbors. Densities of states calculations of these materials were used to interpret spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy data. Calculations were performed for FeN in zincblende and rocksalt structure to compare their relative stability and magnetic properties. Calculations of the preference for ferro or anti ferromagnetic coupling were performed for GdN. Program development work on magneto- optics and methods beyond LDA was initiated.
