Book excerpt: Psychic phenomena have always existed; their main aspects from antiquity to the present day; today they are officially studied at an institute recognized as being of public utility by the State. The phenomena of which we shall treat in this book have been known since the remotest antiquity. What we now call "magnetism," "hypnotism," "suggestion," "telepsychism," etc., constituted the experimental part of the science reserved, in India, in Chaldea, in Egypt, for a privileged caste who assumed at the same time the functions of priests, magistrates, and physicians. From generation to generation, the ancient initiates transmitted to each other the secret of their powers, and it may be said that they had pushed its development to a point from which the moderns are still far removed. For they seem to have exercised an almost absolute ascendancy over the minds and souls of their fellows, healing bodies with a word, subduing with a mere glance. Several authors are also of the opinion that they were capable of using certain forms of energy which our present-day scientists have not yet rediscovered. Some elements of this so-called occult science, because it is carefully concealed from the masses, have survived in the disappeared civilizations. History testifies to the prodigies performed at different times among all peoples by individuals who seem to have inherited powers from the Hierophants.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotism or Animal Magnetism: Physiological Observations Having been requested by the publishers to write a short preface to the following translation for the purpose of introducing an interesting work to the notice of English readers, I think it desirable to say that, not having had an opportunity of reading the translation, I am acquainted with the work only in its original language. But although I am thus unable to form an independent opinion on the merits of the translation as such, I have no doubt that it has been well done; for the translator informs me that his task was undertaken at the suggestion of Professor Ludwig, and it scarcely requires to be said that a suggestion Of the kind from this source is a sufficient guarantee of the competency of the man to execute the work sug gested. Contents include: “History of Hypnotism”, “Mesmer”, “What is Hypnotism”, “Theories of Hypnotism”, “Animal Magnetism”, “The Neurosis Theory”, “Suggestion Theory”, “How to Hypnotise”, “Dr. Cocke's Method”, “Dr. Flint's Method”, “The French Method at Paris”, “At Nancy”, “The Hindoo Silent Method”, etc. “Complete Hypnotism” is highly recommended for those with an interest in hypnotism and related subjects, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Book excerpt: A review from The Medical Current, Volume 8: Hypnotism is now a word much upon the public lips; it has superseded the worn out and mouldy term of animal magnetism. Beyond a doubt the subject of hypnotism at present involves whatever of truth there was in the former doctrines of a Mesmer and his host of satellites. We say beyond a doubt in the minds of many individuals, but here is an author who maintains that hypnotism and animal magnetism, though they have certain superficial resemblances are radically different from each other in their phenomena and in the modes of their production, and that the facts of magnetism are incomparably the more wonderful and the more worthy of scientific study. The title of the work, Mental Suggestion, well marks the difference between hypnotism and magnetism. In hypnotism mental suggestion is not to be thought of, but that it exists in animal magnetism is the task of this author to prove. The writer of this book is in every way competent to treat the subject; he is a learned physiologist and physicist, as well as a psychologist, and he has studied the matter experimentally for years. He has mastered all the literature of hypnotism and animal magnetism; his book contains an enormous amount of information nowhere else accessible outside of the greatest libraries. Just because Ochorowicz first explored the ground thoroughly on his own account and then sifted the bibliography of magnetism, he is able to estimate the true value of the work of prior experimenters, students, and theorizers. It is simple truth to say that no student of human psychology can afford to neglect this most able and brilliant treatise - a work original in its method in its point of view, and possessing moreover all the charms of a consummate literary style - in other words, consummate simplicity and clearness of expression. It is unquestionably the completest work on magnetism and hypnotism ever written; no author so well equipped for the discussion of the question ever attempted it before.

Book excerpt: Max Freedom Long's 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis' delves into the realm of mind-body connections, exploring the power of suggestion and the Huna theory of healing through hypnotic techniques. Long's writing is clear and concise, making complex concepts accessible to readers interested in psychology and alternative healing practices. Drawing from his research on Polynesian shamanism, Long provides a unique perspective on the intersection of Western psychology and ancient spiritual traditions. This book is a valuable resource for those seeking to understand the potential of the human mind in relation to health and well-being. Max Freedom Long, known for his work on the Huna philosophy, was a researcher and author fascinated by the ways in which indigenous cultures approached healing and spiritual practices. His background in anthropology and psychology informed his exploration of hypnotism and mesmerism, leading to the creation of the Huna theory. Long's expertise in these areas shines through in 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis,' making it a comprehensive and insightful read for anyone interested in alternative healing methods. I highly recommend 'Self-Suggestion and the New Huna Theory of Mesmerism and Hypnosis' to readers intrigued by the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and holistic healing. Long's scholarly approach and thorough research make this book a valuable addition to any library focused on mind-body connections and the power of suggestion.

Dr. Paret personally reviewed this new Edition as he applies with incredible success this ancient methodology into which he was personally initiated. Mesmerism is completely different from modern hypnosis. Mesmerism is the Western school corresponding to the use of Prana or Ki (Chi) in Orient. Parts of the teachings of this school were never completely disclosed in print. Dr. Paret, who is a genuine practitioner, wrote a serie of notes which allow a better understanding of practical applications of these techniques and their actualness. Many of the powerful results of Mesmerism are scarcely reachable if only pursued through verbal hypnosis. Dr. Paret therefore accompanies you through your reading. You will not only find here the original text of Dr. Coates, but also a better understanding of the original school of magnetism. If you really want to immerse in this powerful world, this is your occasion!

Book excerpt: 2019 Reprint of 1948 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Franz Friedrich Anton Mesmer [1734-1815] was a German doctor who theorized the existence of a natural energy transference occurring between all animated and inanimate objects; what he called animal magnetism, later also referred to as mesmerism. Mesmer's theory attracted a wide following between about 1780 and 1850 and continued to have some influence thereafter. 1843 the Scottish doctor James Braid proposed the term hypnosis for a technique derived from animal magnetism; today the word "mesmerism" generally functions as a synonym of "hypnosis". This publication is a reprint of the first English translation in 1948 of Mesmer's historic Memoire sur la Decouverte du Magnetisme Animal to appear in English. It was originally published in French in 1779.

Book excerpt: To possess a great strength of character; the self-confidence that allows initiative and success; a thoughtful, resolute, tenacious will; the faculty to dominate oneself, to guide oneself deliberately; a clear, easy, judicious confidence in the presence of anyone; the gift of influencing the thoughts and dispositions of others; the mental vigor and dexterity necessary to overcome a thousand sorts of difficulties: all this, indeed, seems inaccessible to most of us. These things, however, can be acquired. The present book will show you how to methodically determine in yourselves, to a large extent, all these qualities. To fortify by education the will, the power that governs the consciousness, is a matter of exercise. The subordination of the various psychological activities to the reflexive control of the intelligence constitutes the greatest quality of success, because it makes you fit to act in spite of obstacle or difficulty, in accordance with a decision or principle fixed in advance. At a certain level of psychic development, the will is constantly and intimately associated with the central "I". It allows the will to direct one's thoughts, to moderate or heighten, as the case may be, emotions or impulses, and to reign supreme over sensory states. Precise, continuous, intense volitions have, it is well understood, a much more effective action at a distance than indecisive, fugitive and neglected thoughts. The individual psychic influence is therefore increased by reducing the multiplicity of moods, learning to think with energy. In this book we will deal with a method of development of the will; first of all, self-control, then the practice of mental influence at a distance over one or more persons, and finally the application of the methods of voluntary conditioning of destiny. The first effects result first in an impulse to mental initiative, then in a feeling of security, of "power": one has the consciousness of being capable of efforts of will. Little by little, one's self-mastery increases, and soon one's senses, one's sensitivity, one's intellect are directed with the greatest satisfaction. Even independently of the direct tele-psychic influence on others, it is evident that one has succeeded in learning to master oneself, to reason about one's impressions. A look that expresses determination, a precise speech conducted with judgment, a calm and energetic attitude, impresses considerably. The man will carry out what he has planned in a manifestly active manner, with full attention to what he is doing, passing at the appointed moment to the next occupation, maintaining during all phases of his work the same directive expressing the same volition.
