Lashley et al., have recently noted that little experimental evidence for the existence of local moments or collective magnetism has been found in over 50 years. Nevertheless the search for local moments in Pu and Pu-alloys continues, why? Plutonium's physical properties: resistance, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity, all support a system with an enhanced electron density of states. Pu sits on the edge of both magnetism and superconductivity and possesses one of the highest elemental Pauli susceptibilities, consistent with a highly correlated electron system. The low-density {delta}-Pu has eluded full first principles description and is both a challenge and an area of active investigation for theorists. The complex changes associated with the transition between the light and heavy actinides happen within the phase diagram of Pu, thus making Pu an intriguing and challenging solid-state system for continuing experimental and theoretical investigation. Recently, Griveau et al., observed the variations in the resistance and superconducting properties of Am metal as a function of pressure to 27GPa and T>0.4K. They postulate that the interesting features in the superconducting critical temperature, T{sub c}, vs. pressure, indicate a Mott-like, f-electron localization-delocalization transition as pressure drives Am towards a Pu and then a U-like structure. Hence, we posit that it would be reasonable to expect that dilating the Pu lattice will bring one to a similar transition. Experimental evidence supporting this point of view is given here.

Book excerpt: Pu(Am) is stable in the fcc {delta}-phase from a few atomic percent to nearly 80 atomic percent Am, expanding the average interatomic separation as the alloy concentration of Am increases. Both Pu and Am spontaneously decay by {alpha}-emission creating self-damage in the lattice in the form of vacancy-interstitial pairs and their aggregates. At sufficiently low temperatures, the damage is frozen in place, but can be removed by thermal annealing at sufficiently high temperatures, effectively resetting the system to an undamaged condition. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization are observed to increase systematically as a function of accumulated damage in the fcc {delta}-Pu{sub 1-x}Am{sub x} (x=0.224). Some results of these observations are reported here.

The magnetic properties included the coercive force, remanence, shape of the hysteresis loop, Curie temperature, and magnetic moment. Only the Curie temperature, was found to be relatively insensitive to neutron irradiation; all the other properties were modified by varying amounts. The radiation sensitivity of metal alloys and selected ferrites appears to be primarily related to the dependence of magnetic properties on the shortrange ordering of the atoms along certain crystallographic directions. Materials which can be easily ordered show the greatest sensitivity. It has been found that the application of a magnetic field during irradiation can cause directional ordering to take place which in many cases produces more desirable magnetic characteristics. The studies of the ferrites are more complicated since the effects appear to be related to atomic displacements as well as possible radiation induced oxidation. This has been deduced from magnetic measurements of irradiated samples coupled with neutron diffraction data of the same material. (Author).

Measuring these changes in the physical properties provides a basis to study radiation damage in a material which is important for a variety of real world applications from reactor materials to semiconducting devices. When investigating radiation damage, the relative sensitivity of any given property can vary considerably based on the concentration and type of damage present as well as external parameters such as the temperature and starting material composition. By measuring multiple physical properties, these differing sensitivities can be leveraged to provide greater insight into the different aspects of radiation damage accumulation, thereby providing a broader understanding of the mechanisms involved. In this report, self-damage from [alpha]-particle decay in Pu is investigated by measuring two different properties: magnetic susceptibility and resistivity. The results suggest that while the first annealing stage obeys second order chemical kinetics, the primary mechanism is not the recombination of vacancy-interstitial close pairs.
