Book excerpt: The study of the magnetic response of Josephson junction networks can be useful in outlining the behaviour of existing superconducting electronic devices, in conceiving new types of magnetic sensors, and in describing the low-field magnetic properties of granular superconductors. In the present work a wide introduction to Josephson junction networks is provided. The Josephson equations are introduced by means of Ohta's semi-classical model and a simple description of the magnetic response of multiply connected superconductors is given. The analysis of the magnetic response of Josephson junction networks is gradually built up from simple interferometers to three-dimensional lattices of superconducting devices. The analytic description of these systems may be applied when fabricating ultrasensitive vectorial magnetic field sensors and interpreting the low-field magnetic properties of superconducting granular systems.

Book excerpt: The realizations of physical systems whose quantum states can be directly manipulated have been pursued for experiments on fundamental problems in quantum mechanics and implementations of quantum information devices. Micro-fabricated superconducting systems and electronic spins are among the most promising candidates. This book contains the newest and most advanced research reports on such materials, called “Mesoscopic Superconductivity” and “Spintronics”. The former includes superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems, very small Josephson junctions, and micron-size SQUIDs. The latter includes the control of spin transports in semiconductor heterostructures, nano-scale quantum dots, and spin injections. Superconductor-ferromagnetic metal hybrid structures are covered by both of the topics. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers from the third meeting of the international symposium on mesoscopic superconductivity and spintronics. Research on quantum information technology has advanced a great deal since the previous meeting. Mesoscopic physics, such as spins in nano-scale semiconductor structures, micro-fabricated superconducting junctions and extraordinary metal contacts have now been not only theoretically but also experimentally established as important solid-state elements of quantum information devices. The book also contains some papers on information theory from the viewpoint of quantum algorithms, indicating that further collaboration between physics and computer science promises to produce fruitful results in quantum information technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconductivity made accessible-a unique introduction. Does superconductivity have to be hard to understand? No, says Alan Kadin, as he proceeds to make the field accessible to engineers, applied physicists, even undergraduate students in electrical engineering. Setting advanced theories aside, Dr. Kadin uses simple circuit models to develop an understanding of the physics of superconductors, then applies this knowledge to superconducting circuits and systems. He covers cutting-edge circuit applications and materials along with practical examples-giving readers insight into the pros and cons of various superconductors and what superconductivity has to offer for different disciplines. End-of-chapter problems as well as numerous conceptual line drawings, circuit schematics, and plots complement the following topics: * The central role of inductance and kinetic inductance. * Transmission line model for RF and dc properties. * Dual circuit transformations to follow vortex and fluxon motion. * A balanced coverage of low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. * Both large-scale (power) and small-scale (electronic) applications. * Applications of superconducting devices to electromagnetic radiation detectors. * The use of SPICE to simulate Josephson junctions and circuits. *An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

After presenting the fundamental function spaces and their duals, the authors study topics in operator theory and finally develop the theory of distributions up to significant applications such as Sobolev spaces and Dirichlet problems. Along the way, the reader is presented with a truly remarkable assortment of well formulated and interesting exercises, which test the understanding as well as point out many related topics. The answers and hints that are not already contained in the statements of the exercises are collected at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: The aim of the workshop was to bring together specialists in various fields where non-exponential relaxation is observed in order to compare models and experimental results and to examine the general physical principles governing this type of behaviour. Non-exponential relaxation is found in extremely diverse physical systems all of which can be classified as complex. The form of the relaxation is generally parametrized using logarithmic, algebraic or stretched exponential decay forms. The conceptually simplest mechanism for the non-exponential decay is a spectrum of relaxation rates due to non-interacting units each of which relaxes with a different intrinsic time constant. Clear experimental examples can be given where for instance the relaxation of a collection of isolated polymer molecules leads to an overall stretched exponential decay. Non-exponential relaxation is observed in all strongly interacting complex systems (structural glasses, spin glasses, etc ... ) where each elementary unit is in interaction with many other units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the current gap between the theory of symmetry-based dynamics and its application to model and analyze complex systems. As an alternative approach, the authors use the symmetry of the system directly to formulate the appropriate models, and also to analyze the dynamics. Complex systems with symmetry arise in a wide variety of fields, including communication networks, molecular dynamics, manufacturing businesses, ecosystems, underwater vehicle dynamics, celestial and spacecraft dynamics and continuum mechanics. A general approach for their analysis has been to derive a detailed model of their individual parts, connect the parts and note that the system contains some sort of symmetry, then attempt to exploit this symmetry in order to simplify numerical computations. This approach can result in highly complicated models that are difficult to analyze even numerically. The alternative approach, while nonstandard, is not entirely new among the mathematics community. However, there is much less familiarity with the techniques of symmetry-breaking bifurcation, as they apply to the engineering, design and fabrication, of complex systems, in particular, nonlinear sensor devices with special emphasis on the conceptualization and development of new technologies of magnetic sensors such as fluxgate magnetometers and SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices), E-- (electric-field) sensors, and communication and navigation systems that require multiple frequencies of operation, such as radar and antenna devices as well as gyroscopic systems.
