Book Synopsis The New Superconducting Electronics by : H. Weinstock
Download or read book The New Superconducting Electronics written by H. Weinstock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the proceedings of the NATO-sponsored Advanced Studies Institute (ASn on The New Superconducting Electronics (held 9-20 August 1992 in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire USA). The contents herein are intended to provide an update to an earlier volume on the same subject (based on a NATO ASI held in 1988). Four years seems a relatively short time interval, and our title itself, featuring The New Superconducting Electronics, may appear somewhat pretentious. Nevertheless, we feel strongly that the ASI fostered a timely reexamination of the technical progress and application potential of this rapid-paced field. There are, indeed, many new avenues for technological innovation which were not envisioned or considered possible four years ago. The greatest advances by far have occurred with regard to oxide superconductors, the so-called high transition-temperature superconductors, known in short as HTS. These advances are mainly in the ability to fabricate both (1) high-quality, relatively large-area films for microwave filters and (2) multilayer device structures, principally superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions, for superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) magnetometers. Additionally, we have seen the invention and development of the flux-flow transistor, a planar three-terminal device. During the earlier ASI only the very first HTS films with adequate critical-current density had just been fabricated, and these were of limited area and had high resistance for microwave current.
Book Synopsis Connectivity and Superconductivity by : Jorge Berger
Download or read book Connectivity and Superconductivity written by Jorge Berger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motto of connectivity and superconductivity is that the solutions of the Ginzburg–Landau equations are qualitatively in?uenced by the topology of the boundaries. Special attention is given to the “zero set”,the set of the positions (usually known as “quantum vortices”) where the order parameter vanishes. The paradigm of connectivity and superconductivity is the Little– Parks e?ect, discussed in most textbooks on superconductivity. This volume is intended to serve as a reference book for graduate students and researchers in physics or mathematics interested in superconductivity, or in the Schr ̈ odinger equation as a limiting case of the Ginzburg–Landau equations. The e?ects considered here usually become important in the regime where the coherence length is of the order of the dimensions of the sample. While in the Little–Parks days a lot of ingenuity was required to achieve this regime, present microelectronic techniques have transformed it into a routine. Mo- over, measurement and visualization techniques are developing at a pace which makes it reasonable to expect veri?cation of distributions, and not only of global properties. Activity in the ?eld has grown and diversi?ed substantially in recent years. We have therefore invited experts ranging from experimental and theoretical physicists to pure and applied mathematicians to contribute articles for this book. While the skeleton of the book deals with superconductivity,micron- works and generalizations of the Little–Parks situation, there are also articles which deal with applications of the Ginzburg–Landau formalism to several fundamental topics, such as quantum coherence, cosmology, and questions in materials science.

Book Synopsis Modern Aspects of Superconductivity by : Sergei Kruchinin
Download or read book Modern Aspects of Superconductivity written by Sergei Kruchinin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconductivity remains one of the most interesting research areas in physics and stood as a major scientific mystery for a large part of this century. This book, written for graduate students and researchers in the field of superconductivity, discusses important aspects of the experiment and theory surrounding superconductivity. New experimental investigations of magnetic and thermodynamic superconducting properties of mesoscopic samples are explored with the help of recent developments in nanotechnologies and measurement techniques, and the results are predicted based upon theoretical models in nanoscale superconducting systems. Topics of special interest include high-Tc superconductivity, two-gap superconductivity in magnesium diborades, room-temperature superconductivity, mechanism of superconductivity and mesoscopic superconductivity. Particular attention is given to understanding the symmetry and pairing in superconductors. The theory of the Josephson effect is presented and its application in quantum computing are analyzed.
Book Synopsis Transport Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems by : Hidetoshi Fukuyama
Download or read book Transport Phenomena in Mesoscopic Systems written by Hidetoshi Fukuyama and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourteenth Thniguchi Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held from November 10 to 14, 1991, at the Shima Kanko Hotel, Shima, Japan. The topic of the symposium was Physics 0/ Mesoscopic Systems. Mesoscopic systems have been developed band in band with the recent progress in nanotechnology and are the melting pot of basic science and technology. In nanostructures, the quantum effect of the electron wave manifests itself because of the limited dimensionality of the structure. The most typical features of these structures are the discreteness of the energy spectrum and the interference effect of electron waves, which have led to various fascinating phenomena. The purpose of this symposium was to discuss the latest developments in mesoscopic systems, especially transport phenomena, from the viewpoint of basic physics. This volume starts with an introduction to the field of mesoscopic systems together with the paper by Prof. R. Kubo, who was the first to note the existence of particular features of discrete energy levels in small metallic particles. In Part II the electronic states of quantum dots and the conductance through them are discussed. Tunneling via small structures and junctions is studied in Part ill.
