Book excerpt: Monodisperse FePt nanoparticles were prepared using high temperature solution phase synthesis. Polymer-mediated layer-by-layer growth leads to precise control of the particle self-assembly. The narrow particle size distribution ([sigma] ≤ 5%) offers the potential for increased data storage density by utilizing a smaller mean particle size and ultimately storage of one bit per individual nanoparticle. We have studied self-assembled multilayers of magnetic FePt nanoparticles. The L10 phase of FePt has a very high magnetic anisotropy which allows the magnetization of particles of about 4 nm diameter to be thermally stable at room temperature. Magnetic measurements using vibrating sample magnetometer were combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) Spectroscopy to study the annealed FePt nanoparticle assemblies and to optimize annealing conditions. NEXAFS spectra showed that a fraction of the iron in the as-deposited particles was oxidized, and this fraction was reduced by annealing in inert or reducing atmospheres. A very thin layer (

They have numerous applications from nano-size magnetic memories to metamaterials for electromagnetic waves as well as biological applications such as nanosurgery with minimal traumatism. Their long-ranged size- and shape-dependent dipolar interactions provide numerous useful properties. This book describes the preparation as well as the magnetic properties of nanoparticles and also considers 2D dots, nearly spherical samples, elongated samples, and various assemblies of nanoparticles. The authors report the static magnetic structures and dynamic properties of these nanoparticles and the topological defects in 2D and 3D nanoparticles with new examples of S-shaped vortex or antivortex and of bent vortex or antivortex in 3D nanoparticles. The spectrum of magnetic excitations is shown to exhibit the occurrence of gaps, a key for magnonic metamaterial devices. Magnetic excited states are also considered with their coupling to nanoparticle elastic properties.

Book excerpt: Suspensions of both dispersed and clustered iron oxide nanoparticles are of interest for biomedical applications as diagnostic and therapeutic agents due to their bio-compatibility and interesting magnetic and magnetic resonance properties. Their application is critically dependent on the fact that these properties are highly size-dependant. By developing NP synthesis and assembly methods, to provide improved size control at the two levels of organisation, NP suspensions with controlled emergent magnetic properties have been prepared. The first part of this thesis presents the size-controlled synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles whose surface is functionalised with a wide range of stabilising ligands. An investigation was undertaken to elucidate the effect of the stabilising ligands on the physical properties. The second part of the thesis presents a novel method for the reproducible assembly, in suspension, of NPs to form clusters. The method can be used to produce clusters of controlled size in large quantities; it is also shown that the kinetics of assembly can be easily controlled and that this influences the emergent magnetic properties. Arising from this observation a study was undertaken to determine the role of cluster architecture on the magnetic resonance properties of their aqueous suspensions.

Book excerpt: Nanomaterials are important tools for enabling technological progress as they can provide dramatically different properties as compared to the bulk counterparts. The field of nanoparticles is one of the most investigated within nanomaterials, thanks to the existing, relatively simple, means of manufacturing. In this thesis, high-power pulsed hollow cathode sputtering is used to nucleate and grow magnetic nanoparticles in a plasma. This sputtering technique provides a high degree of ionization of the sputtered material, which has previously been shown to aid in the growth of the nanoparticles. The magnetic properties of the particles are utilized and makes it possible for the grown particles to act as building blocks for self-assembly into more sophisticated nano structures, particularly when an external magnetic field is applied. These structures created are termed “nanowires” or “nanotrusses”, depending on the level of branching and inter-linking that occurs. Several different elements have been investigated in this thesis. In a novel approach, it is shown how nanoparticles with more advanced structures, and containing material from two hollow cathodes, can be fabricated using high-power pulses. The dual-element particles are achieved by using two distinct and individual elemental cathodes, and a pulse process that allows tuning of individual pulses separately to them. Nanoparticles grown and investigated are Fe, Ni, Pt, Fe-Ni and Ni-Pt. Alternatively, the addition of oxygen to the process allows the formation of oxide or hybrid metal oxide – metal particles. For all nanoparticles containing several elements, it is demonstrated that the stoichiometry can be easily varied, either by the amount of reactive gas let into the process or by tuning the amount of sputtered material through adjusting the electric power supplied to the different cathodes. One aim of the presented work is to find a suitable material for the use as a catalyst in the production of H2 gas through the process of water splitting. H2 is a good candidate to replace fossil fuels as an energy carrier. However, rare elements (such as Ir or Pt) needs to be used as the catalyst, otherwise a high overpotential is required for the splitting to occur, leading to a low efficiency. This work demonstrates a possible route to avoid this, by using nanomaterials to increase the surface-to-volume ratio, as well as optimizing the elemental ratio between different materials to lower the amount of noble elements required.

Book excerpt: Complexes of magnetic nanoparticles with polymer dispersion stabilizers can lead to well-defined magnetic dispersions and also to precursors for magnetic microspheres. Thus, complexes of block copolymers containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic dispersion components with magnetite nanoparticles have been prepared and characterized. In-vitro cell survival assays of the hydrophilic complexes suggest a relationship between cell survival and proliferation and the molecular weight (and hydrophilicity) of the polymer dispersants (higher molecular weight results in better cell proliferation/survival). Magnetic transition metals such as cobalt, iron or nickel are susceptible to oxidation with concurrent loss in magnetic response unless the nanoparticle surfaces are protected with oxygen impermeable coatings. Copolymer precursors to graphitic-like and silica-like protective coatings have been prepared and utilized to coat cobalt nanoparticles in thermolysis reactions. High temperature pyrolyses of the complexes in both cases suggest that oxidatively stable cobalt nanoparticles approximately 10 nm in diameter can be formed. The pyrolysis procedure results in 10-nm cobalt but the particles are adhered together. Attention will be devoted during the forthcoming year on methods for separating the nanoparticles from each other and on 're-coating' the materials with appropriate biospecific functional groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles of 5 to 11 nm in size were prepared by organic methods. Particle size was analyzed by both X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques. Zero Field Cooling (ZFC) / Field Cooling (FC) and magnetization loop measurements were recorded by VSM, and they confirmed superparamagnetic behavior in the sample. The blocking temperature is found to be in the range of 30 K ~ 170 K. It has a dependence on the particle size. ZFC / FC curves also indicate the presence of magnetic coupling between particles. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurements of these nanoparticles were measured at 80 K and 300 K. By using the sum rules, spin and orbital magnetic moments were calculated from the XMCD signal. The results confirm a quenching orbital moment and a large spin moment. The calculated total magnetic moments are somewhat smaller than in bulk Fe3O4. Also, the spin moment at 80 K was found to be larger than at 300 K. X-ray Resonant Magnetic Scattering (XRMS) measurements at different temperatures, polarizations and fields were carried out. The intensity profile gives information on the interparticle distance between nanoparticles which is consistent with TEM results. A magnetic signal was extracted by calculating the dichoroic term, when the energy is tuned to resonant edges. This magnetic signal is confirmed by comparing the dichroic terms at different conditions.

Book excerpt: This project has entailed the development of magnetic materials with potential suitability as vehicles for magnetic field-directed drug delivery, and the design and implementation of a laboratory-scale instrument for measuring the magnetophoretic behavior of new materials in flowing media. Triblock copolymers comprised of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) tail blocks and a polyurethane anchor block containing carboxylic acid binding groups were designed and synthesized. A method for preparing stabilized dispersions of magnetite nanoparticles coated with the stabilizers was developed, and these coated nanoparticles could be dispersed in water. Dispersions of the particle-copolymer complexes remained stable (did not separate) when these materials were dialyzed rigorously and subjected to repeated centrifugation steps to eliminate potentially toxic extractables. An in-vitro assay of toxicity was developed to assess cell survival in the presence of the magnetite nanoparticle-copolymer complexes. A first generation magnet system was designed in collaboration with our colleagues at Stereotaxis (St. Louis, MO). This research scale magnetic guidance system is now in place at VA Tech.
