Besides, the ever active legislators have wrought considerable alteration in the statute law since the last publication on the subject. The within work cites all the cases which have been decided in Canada, in any way relating to the rights, powers, and duties of Justices of the Peace. So far as applicable, the English cases, down to the first day of January, 1878, have also been given. Several Canadian cases, in advance of the regular reports, have been kindly furnished me by H. C. W. Wethey, Esquire, reporter to the Court of Queen's Bench in Ontario. My thanks are also due to Mr. Wethey for the care and labour bestowed on the preparation of the table of cases. It is hoped that this work will meet with the approval of those for whom it has been written. No pains have been spared in its preparation, and the requirements of the magistracy have been kept constantly in view. It has been my aim to make the work concise and to compress it within moderate compass. I have not thought it necessary to print the statute law in full, assuming that the magistrates are already supplied with the Acts relating to criminal law. But I have referred to the statutes so as to indicate the nature of their provisions, and have noted all the amending and repealing statutes.
