Book excerpt: This compendium showcases EVERY character ever mentioned in the Harry Potter books, films and play: the good, the bad and the misunderstood. With more than 700 entries, this book is packed from cover to cover! J.K. Rowling’s collection of mystical multitudes is what makes the wizarding world so enchanting. To dive into Harry’s story is to immerse yourself in the richness of a magical universe filled with wizarding history, culture and lore. A world of witches, wizards, owls, elves, non- magical people, anti-non-magical-people people, folks who can talk to snakes and snakes who used to be folks. There are mind-readers, shape-shifters, centaurs, giants, ghosts (nearly headless and fully formed) and one enormous, extremely ill- tempered tree. This massive tome details every character created by J.K. Rowling and appearing in the official Harry Potter canon of books, movies and plays. Each entry highlights one character, where you will find details of when the character was first mentioned, appearance, wizard school, house, patronus, wand, related family members, skills and achievements, personal history and more. The Compendium also include genealogical charts and family trees for the major characters, world maps detailing important locations, homes and schools, as well as charts detailing alliances between characters.

Book excerpt: This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Guderian's book argued, quite clearly, how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WOMEN IN ANTIQUITY is mainly about women in those Mediterranean civilisations which are the root of ours. After touching on the life of women in Palaeolithic and Neolithic times, Dr. Seltman comes to the first urban civilisations in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where the exaltation of women was bound up with the religious attitude towards love-goddesses and mother-goddesses. He discusses nudity and the wearing of clothes; fertility rites and sacred prostitution; heroines of the Bible; the cult of Isis. Fascinating pages deal with the women of Minoan Crete and of the Heroic Age (as described by Homer and confirmed by archaeological discoveries). A chapter on Sparta refers to the custom of exposing feeble infants, the annual flagellation of boys, the athletic prowess of girls, and the social and sexual codes. Coming to Athens, he appraises slavery and gives an imaginary Socratic dialogue to show how a 5th-century Athenian would have felt about some of our present Western ideas. This leads to the question: “Why is our modern world so preoccupied with sex and sin?” Dr. Seltman tells of the false 19th-century concepts of Athenian life and the position of women, discusses the hetairai (‘girl-friends’), and contrasts the attitudes of Aristophanes and Plato to women. A chapter entitled “The New Woman” deals with girl athletes as typified by the story of Atalanta. Then we see how women fared in the Hellenistic Age and in the time of the Roman Republic and Empire. The final chapters show how anti-feminism was developed by the Fathers of the Church and frankly discuss monasticism and celibacy. The book is fully documented, and the carefully chosen illustrations are exceptionally interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa explores how different masculinities modulate substance use, interpersonal violence, suicidality, and AIDS as well as recovery cross-culturally. With a focus on three male protagonists living in very distinct urban areas of Cape Town, this comparative ethnography shows that men’s struggles to become invulnerable increase vulnerability. Through an analysis of masculinities as social assemblages, the study shows how affective health problems are tied to modern individualism rather than African ‘tradition’ that has become a cliché in Eurocentric gender studies. Affective health is conceptualized as a balancing act between autonomy and connectivity that after colonialism and apartheid has become compromised through the imperative of self-reliance. This book provides a rare perspective on young men’s vulnerability in everyday life that may affect the reader and spark discussion about how masculinities in relationships shape physical and psychological health. Moreover, it shows how men change in the face of distress in ways that may look different than global health and gender-transformative approaches envision. Thick descriptions of actual events over the life course make the study accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences. Contributing to current debates on mental health and masculinity, this volume will be of interest to scholars from various disciplines including anthropology, gender studies, African studies, psychology, and global health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, W.E. Blatz was so much occupied with the development of the University of Toronto’s Institute of Child Study that he was able to devote little time to writing. This is his first book to appear in twenty-one years, and his first complete exposition of his famous Theory of Security. The Theory of Security is radically different from the theories promulgated by Freudian psychologists. Whereas Freudian personality theory is based on the notion of “unconscious,” an entity that is only indirectly observable, the Theory of Security derives from the observation of the conscious state in all its manifestations. Dr. Blatz thus makes use of both empirical observations and the results of introspection, and, as might be expected, some of his conclusions run counter to those reached in much current psychological discussion. But proof of the forcible influence of the theory and its author may be found in the impressive number of books and articles already published by Dr. Blatz’s associates at the Institute of Child Study, applying the theory to the practical problems of psychological observation and therapy. It is fitting that the man whose work has generated so much fruitful research by others in this field should at last have set down in book form the fundamental principles that guided them.
