Book Synopsis Imagining the Mulatta by : Jasmine Mitchell
Download or read book Imagining the Mulatta written by Jasmine Mitchell and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-05-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil markets itself as a racially mixed utopia. The United States prefers the term melting pot. Both nations have long used the image of the mulatta to push skewed cultural narratives. Highlighting the prevalence of mixed race women of African and European descent, the two countries claim to have perfected racial representation—all the while ignoring the racialization, hypersexualization, and white supremacy that the mulatta narrative creates. Jasmine Mitchell investigates the development and exploitation of the mulatta figure in Brazilian and U.S. popular culture. Drawing on a wide range of case studies, she analyzes policy debates and reveals the use of mixed-Black female celebrities as subjects of racial and gendered discussions. Mitchell also unveils the ways the media moralizes about the mulatta figure and uses her as an example of an ”acceptable” version of blackness that at once dreams of erasing undesirable blackness while maintaining the qualities that serve as outlets for interracial desire.

Veteran Nazi hunter Yakov Liebermann finds himself entangled in a web of unimaginable horror when he is tipped off to a sinister conspiracy hatching in the depths of South America: a plan to establish a new, globe-spanning Fourth Reich. Why has Dr. Josef Mengele—Auschwitz’s fiendish “Angel of Death”—tasked a team of former SS men with the slaughter of ninety-four harmless, aging men across the globe? What hidden link binds these men together? What significance could they possibly hold for their pursuers? With the clock ticking, and the future of humanity hanging in the balance, can the ailing Liebermann take on a seemingly unstoppable enemy and alter the course of history? Adapted into the film starring Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier, The Boys from Brazil is a gripping, thought-provoking thriller that explores the depths of human malevolence, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Book excerpt: This study seeks to identify the determinants of Brazil's favourable export performance until the mid-1980s, especially in the field of manufactured goods. Two hypotheses figure prominently in the analysis. The export success may be due to Brazil's specialization in industries which made intensive use of the country's relatively abundant productive factors. Alternatively, economic policies may be responsible for the success in manufactured exports.

Book Synopsis Terms of Inclusion by : Paulina L. Alberto
Download or read book Terms of Inclusion written by Paulina L. Alberto and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this history of black thought and racial activism in twentieth-century Brazil, Paulina Alberto demonstrates that black intellectuals, and not just elite white Brazilians, shaped discourses about race relations and the cultural and political terms of inclusion in their modern nation. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including the prolific black press of the era, and focusing on the influential urban centers of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador da Bahia, Alberto traces the shifting terms that black thinkers used to negotiate their citizenship over the course of the century, offering fresh insight into the relationship between ideas of race and nation in modern Brazil. Alberto finds that black intellectuals' ways of engaging with official racial discourses changed as broader historical trends made the possibilities for true inclusion appear to flow and then recede. These distinct political strategies, Alberto argues, were nonetheless part of black thinkers' ongoing attempts to make dominant ideologies of racial harmony meaningful in light of evolving local, national, and international politics and discourse. Terms of Inclusion tells a new history of the role of people of color in shaping and contesting the racialized contours of citizenship in twentieth-century Brazil.
