Book Synopsis Harry Gruyaert: Edges by : Harry Gruyaert
Download or read book Harry Gruyaert: Edges written by Harry Gruyaert and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning collection, Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert explores the visual power of shorelines. The “edges” that Harry Gruyaert, a preeminent member of the Magnum photo agency, explores in this lush, full-color book are the oceans, seas, and rivers where humans meet the edge of the shoreline and the water begins. This unique volume, which opens from the bottom up, takes the reader to Israel’s Dead Sea, the Niger River in Mali, the North Sea of Iceland, South Korea, and Biarritz, as Gruyaert’s photos record the subtle chromatic vibrations of the edges of the far East and West. Gruyaert juxtaposes the hustle of the city with a pared-down, yet intense, nature. His landscapes are never empty; they are inhabited places where light, color, objects, people, and situations weave a serene, sublime scene. This beautifully produced photographic manifesto reveals the profoundly poetic character of Gruyaert’s work, and the sensual elegance of his compositions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Gourmand Award winner for Best Foreign-International Cuisine “will broaden your horizons to the left of La Belle France and you will thank it” (Mostly Food & Travel Journal). Ruth van Waerebeek’s wonderful compendium of Belgian recipes celebrates the country that boasts more three-star restaurants per capita than any other nation—including France. It’s a country where home cooks—and everyone, it seems, is a great home cook—spend copious amounts of time thinking about, shopping for, preparing, discussing, and celebrating food. With its hearty influences from Germany and Holland, herbs straight out of a medieval garden, and condiments and spices from the height of Flemish culture, Belgian cuisine is elegant comfort food at its best—slow-cooked, honest, and hearty. It’s the Sunday meal and a continental dinner party, family picnics and that antidote to a winter’s day. In 250 delicious recipes, here is the best of Belgian cuisine: Veal Stew with Dumplings, Mushrooms, and Carrots; Smoked Trout Mousse with Watercress Sauce; Braised Partridge with Cabbage and Abbey Beer; Gratin of Belgian Endives; Flemish Carrot Soup; Steak-Frites; Steamed Mussels; and desserts—some using the best chocolate on earth—including Belgian Chocolate Ganache Tart, Almond Cake with Fresh Fruit Topping, and Little Chocolate Nut Cakes. As the Belgians say, since everybody has to eat three times a day, why not make a feast of every meal? “Ruth is an engaging writer, plenty of stories and reminiscences pepper the text. . . . Bask in Belgian goodness, a cuisine that really deserves to be better known.” —Foodepedia

Book excerpt: The Giannettis have developed a home design style that embraces age, patina, weathered and worn surfaces, and rough surfaces. Patina Style is a color palette, a romance with subtlety, an attraction to natural materials and architectural details. It is at once old-world, contemporary, and mildly industrial. Patina Style gives insight into materials choices, methods and treatments that result in spaces that celebrate beauty in the old, the imperfect, the slightly roughed-up.

Download or read book Dear Bill Bryson written by Ben Aitken and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE ACCLAIMED THE GRAN TOUR AND THE MARMALADE DIARIES An irreverent homage to the '95 travel classic. 'It would be wrong to view this book as just a highly accomplished homage to a personal hero. Aitken's politics, as much as his humour, are firmly in the spotlight, and Dear Bill Bryson achieves more than its title (possibly even its author) intended.' Manchester Review In 2013, travel writer Ben Aitken decided to follow in the footsteps of his hero - literally - and started a journey around the UK, tracing the trip taken by Bill Bryson in his classic tribute to the British Isles, Notes from a Small Island. Staying at the same hotels, ordering the same food, and even spending the same amount of time in the bath, Aitken's homage - updated and with a new preface for 2022 - is filled with wit, insight and humour.
Download or read book Belgium written by Samuel Humes and published by Hurst & Company. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise history describes the traditions and transitions that over two thousand years have developed in Belgium in a sense of shared identity, common government, and a centralized nation-state - and then over a few recent decades paved the way for Flemish-Walloon schism that now threatens to break up Belgium. It responds to the question: Why does a government, unified for more than 600 years, no longer seem capable of holding together a linguistically divided country In tracing the evolution of Belgian governance, Humes describes why and how the dominance of French-speaking propertied elite eroded after having monopolized the land's governance for centuries. The extension of suffrage, combined with the rise of literacy and schooling enabled labor and Flemish movements to gather sufficient momentum to fracture the Belgian polity, splitting its parties and frustrating its politics. The presence of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has, in a tangential way, enable the Belgian separatists to discount the merit of a national government that is no longer needed to defend the country militarily and economically.
Book Synopsis The United States of Belgium by : Jane Judge
Download or read book The United States of Belgium written by Jane Judge and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New and comprehensive insights into the seminal events that shaped Belgian identity In 1790, between the birth of America (1776) and the creation of the French National Assembly (1789), nine provinces nestled between the French and Dutch borders declared themselves a new free and independent country: the United States of Belgium. Before then, the provinces had been part of the vast Austrian Habsburg Empire ruled by Joseph II. In 1789 revolutionaries from Brussels to Ghent to Namur recruited a grass-roots army that, to the surprise of many, successfully chased imperial forces from the majority of the territories. The exhilaration of military triumph and political independence quickly faded as revolutionary factions fought each other and the European monarchies became more nervous in the face of French radicalization. Yet, the course of events had fostered the solidification of a new identity among the provinces’ inhabitants: Belgianness. This is the story of the emergence of Belgianness in the crucible of revolution. The United States of Belgium tells the story of the First Belgian Revolution before the creation of a language barrier between French and Dutch. It incorporates over 50 contemporary images of the revolutionary era.

Book Synopsis "Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth": The First International in a Global Perspective by :
Download or read book "Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth": The First International in a Global Perspective written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism. In our age of globalised capitalism, large labour migration, and rising nationalisms, much can be learnt from the history of the first international labour organisation. Book Synopsis Alien Policy in Belgium, 1840-1940 by : Frank Caestecker
Download or read book Alien Policy in Belgium, 1840-1940 written by Frank Caestecker and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belgium has a unique place in the history of migration in that it was the first among industrialized nations in Continental Europe to develop into an immigrant society. In the nineteenth century Italians, Jews, Poles, Czechs, and North Africans settled in Belgium to work in industry and commerce. They were followed by Russians in the 1920s and Germans in the 1930s who were seeking a safe haven from persecution by totalitarian regimes. In the nineteenth century immigrants were to a larger extent integrated into Belgian society: they were denied political rights but participated on equal terms with Belgians in social life. This changed radically in the twentieth century; by 1940 the rights of aliens were severely curtailed, while those of Belgian citizens, in particular in the social domain, were extended. While the state evolved into a "welfare state" for its citizens it became more of a police state for immigrants. The state only tolerated immigrants who were prepared to carry out those jobs that were shunned by the Belgians. Under the pressure of public opinion, an exception was made in the cases of thousands of Jewish refugees that had fled from Nazi Germany. However, other immigrants were subjected to harsh regulations and in fact became the outcasts of twentieth-century Belgian liberal society. This remarkable study examines in depth and over a long time span how (anti-) alien policies were transformed, resulting in an illiberal exclusion of foreigners at the same time as democratization and the welfare state expanded. In this respect Belgium is certainly not unique but offers an interesting case study of developments that are characteristic for Europe as a whole.
Download or read book Harry Gruyaert written by Harry Gruyaert and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New from Magnum Photos member Harry Gruyaert, a collection of photographs of airports and people in transit. Alongside American photographers such as Saul Leiter, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore, and William Eggleston, Harry Gruyaert became one of the first European pioneers to explore the creative possibilities of color photography in the 1970s and 1980s. The previous decades had elevated black-and-white photography to the realms of art, relegating the use of color to advertising, press, and illustration. Gruyaert’s work suggested new territory for color photography: an emotive, nonnarrative, and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world. Harry Gruyaert: Last Call highlights the photographer’s signature ability to seamlessly weave texture, light, color, and architecture into a single frame with his photographs taken at airports. These photographs beautifully record these liminal, yet reliably inhabited spaces in a striking and sometimes surprising fashion.
Book Synopsis For Rex and for Belgium by : Eddy de Bruyne
Download or read book For Rex and for Belgium written by Eddy de Bruyne and published by Helion & Company Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 60 years after the end of the Second World War, the name "Degrelle" remains controversial in Belgium and abroad. Was he a traitor to his nation, or a hero for anti-Communism? Until recently, the only information available on the man and his political movement came from Degrelle's own memoirs, or from works heavily slanted for or against him. Eddy De Bruyne, specialist in WWII Walloon Military Collaboration, has devoted over 20 years to intensively studying the available documentation, as well as interviewing the surviving collaborators of that era, including Degrelle himself. De Bruyne's findings, set down in several French language publications, represent the most detailed studies of Walloon political and military collaboration yet assembled. Now, with the aid of American Waffen-SS researcher Marc Rikmenspoel, De Bruyne has combined his works into a single English language book. The greatest portion of the book is devoted to the most comprehensive account of the campaigns of the Legion Wallonie and its successor SS-Sturmbrigade/Division Wallonien (28th SS Panzergrenadier Division) yet seen in English. The text is supported by approximately 400 period photos, complemented by many maps and illustrations of contemporary posters and other ephemera, completing a package that will be a must-have for military historians, afficianados of rare photos, and collectors of materials on the SS.
Download or read book Lars Tunbjörk written by Maud Nycander and published by Max Strom. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest and most extensive retrospective of Lars Tunbjörk's work ever published. Lars Tunbjörk was inspired by the Swedish masters such as Christer Stromholm, but soon discovered his own style by taking a cue from the American photographers of the 1970s like Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. Tunbjork's images amplified the most mundane and absurd aspects of modern life in a surreal way, using the hard light of flash photography, which became his signature style and influenced a generation of photographers after him. Whatever subject he was documenting, suburbia or offices spaces, he did it in such a revealing way with a stark, clear-eyed honesty layered with a sense of humour. Tunbjörk's work is best experienced in the photo book format. He used the medium to build loose narratives and to showcase his extraordinary projects. He released more than 10 photobooks, which include Home and Vinter. He came to pre-eminence with the now rare book Office, with Martin Parr and Gerry Badger describing him as 'an acute observer of modern life.
