Book excerpt: "The Southern South" by Albert Bushnell Hart is a book that reveals the knowledge and appreciation of Southern conditions. It is not to the purpose of this book to describe those numerous common traits which belong to people in all sections of the United States but to bring into relief some of the characteristics of the South which are not shared by the North. For it is certain that the physical and climatic conditions of the South are different from those of the North, and equally sure that as a community the South has certain temperamental peculiarities which affect its views of the world in general and also of its own problems. Slavery, which had a little permanent effect on the society or institutions of those parts of the North in which it existed up to the Revolution, was for two centuries a large factor in Southern life and has left many marks upon both white and negro races. The existence of a formerly servile race now ten million-strong still influences the whole development of the South. Unlike the North, which ever since the Civil War has felt disposed to consider itself the characteristic United States, the South looks upon itself, and is looked upon by its neighbors, as a unit within a larger unit; as set apart by its traditions, its history, and its commercial interests. The ex-president of the Southern Confederacy a few years ago at a public meeting declared that he appeared "In a defense of our Southland." A Southland there is, in the sense of a body of states which, while now yielding to none in loyalty to the Union and in participation in its great career, adhere together with such a sense of peculiar life and standards as is not to be found in any group of Northern communities except perhaps New England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal object of these letters is to tell a new tale of modern Paraguay, to place before the public simple, unvarnished sketches and studies of what presented itself to one visiting the seat of a campaign which has, in this our day, brought death and desolation into the fair valleys of the Paraguay and the Uruguay Rivers. In no case, let me say, has distance better displayed its effects upon the European mind. Returning home, the author found blankness of face whenever the word Paraguay (which they pronounced Parāgay) was named, and a general confession of utter ignorance and hopeless lack of interest.

Book excerpt: Written two years after the First World War, it is the story of the contribution which British seamen made for the prosperity and well-being of the world, a story that was never accounted for before. This is a tale of a merchant fleet of the day. The work aims to describe the height of technological achievement in marines of the time and the civilians who operated them, without whom the war could not have been fought in any way. These men worked in situations of negligence and difficulty that would terrify the modern reader. This thought-provoking work makes the reader consider that even though all these events happened a long time ago, one needs to remember the people who were a part of such brave acts and made this happen.

Book excerpt: The following pages represent all that Henry James lived to write of a volume of autobiographical reminiscences to which he had given the name of one of his own short stories, The Middle Years. It was designed to follow on Notes of a Son and Brother and to extend to about the same length. The chapters here printed were dictated during the autumn of 1914. They were laid aside for other work toward the end of the year and were not revised by the author. A few quite evident slips have been corrected and the marking of the paragraphs—which he usually deferred till the final revision—has been completed.

Book excerpt: "The Soldier and Death" by Arthur Ransome is an old Russian folk story. The narrative revolves around a man who seizes 'death', places it in a bag, and hovers it from a tree. No one dies as a result. Excerpt: "The devils looked at all the money they had lost. It seemed a pity to lose all that good silver and gold. "Tear him to pieces, brothers," they cried, "tear him to pieces, eat him and have done!" The soldier tapped his little pipe on the table. "First make sure," says he, "who eats whom." And with that he whips out his sack, and, says he, to the devils, who were all gnashing their teeth and making ready to fall on him, "what do you call this?" "It's a sack," said the devils. "Is it?" says the soldier. "Then, by the word of God, get into it!" And the next minute all those devils were tumbling over each other and getting into the sack, squeezing in one on the top of another until the last one had got inside. Then the soldier tied up the sack with a good double knot, hung it on a nail, and lay down to sleep."

Book excerpt: "Rebel women" by Evelyn Sharp is the first biography of an unapologetic rebel and a wonderful writer. The stories revealed various situations that suffragettes went through. The book provides the feminist point of view of the author in regards to society. Evelyn Sharp's story captures the changes in possibilities for talented Victorian women who lived into the mid-twentieth century. Excerpt: "Funny, isn't it?" said the young man on the top of the omnibus. "No," said the young woman from whom he appeared to expect an answer, "I don't think it is funny." "Take care," said the young man's friend, nudging him, "perhaps she's one of them!" Everybody within hearing laughed, except the woman, who did not seem to be aware that they were talking about her. She was on her feet, steadying herself by grasping the back of the seat in front of her, and her eyes, non-committal in their lack of expression, were bent on the roaring, restless crowd that surged backwards and forwards in the Square below, where progress was gradually becoming an impossibility due to the stream of traffic struggling towards Whitehall."
