GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK • PEOPLE’S BOOK OF THE WEEK • A POPSUGAR BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can’t help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet she wonders if she can trust him completely. . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in Ash, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her. Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves.

Book excerpt: Since its origin cinema has had an uneasy relationship with science and technology: scientists are almost always impossibly mad or impossibly saintly, and technology is nearly always very bad for you. In Mad, Bad and Dangerous?, Christopher Frayling explores the genealogy of the film scientist in films made in Western Europe, and especially in Hollywood after the 1930s, showing how in film the scientist has often been used to represent the prevailing phobias of the time. In the 1950s, for example, films were dominated by the fear of botched atomic research, and were a showcase of mutated, outsized creatures and radioactive zombies. Since Hitchcock’s The Birds, however, the role of the scientist has been less straightforward, and by the 1970s damage to the environment and the spread of diseases were the predominant consequences of science gone wrong. Scientists – and the corporations that controlled them – became the ‘baddies’. The author also examines in parallel the portrayal of real-life scientists in the movies, noting how they are in the main depicted as misfits, immersed in their work, sacrificing any normal life to the interests of science, yet distrusted by the scientific establishment. Interestingly, the cinematic portrayal of fictional and real-life scientists follow very similar dramatic conventions, and Frayling concludes that the mad scientist and the saintly one are two sides of the same Hollywood coin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rock-solid characters, buzz-saw action and backstories deserving of books of their own. Amazing..." Conor Maguire nearly lost his daughter Barb when she was three years old, injured by the drunk driver that killed his wife. When the justice system failed him, Conor -- the son and grandson of IRA bombers -- retaliated against the driver in dramatic and gruesome fashion. While an ironclad alibi prevented the police from pinning the murder on Conor, it did not prevent a covert agency within the US government from recruiting the talented young bomber and machinist. For over twenty-five years, Conor designed and built custom weapons of death and destruction at his compound in the mountains of Virginia. Then a series of devastating terror attacks brought down the United States. Conor and Barb assumed they were safe in their secure compound. They had food and a water source. They were armed and highly-trained. Then Barb was kidnapped. The kidnappers, needing slave labor for their farm, didn't know why Conor was known as The Mad Mick. They didn't know the fear and respect his name invoked in the shadowy world of covert operations. They didn't know that when it came to protecting his family, he was without conscience, without compassion, and without equal. But they would soon find out.

Having taught herself how to kick, rear and bite, she is determined not to be broken in, and do everything herself without the help of humans, preferring to win a race without a jockey. She is soon sent off for “re-training” but never loses her high opinion of herself and her wonderful abilities. As the book progresses, she gets nearer and nearer to the “meat man” until there is an unexpected rescue. This book is suitable for adults as well as children. Written in a humorous fashion, it tells how in today’s world, there is still much ill-treatment of horses, often through ignorance, not intent. “Monday May is an addictive novel and a must-read for anyone who loves horses. I wouldn’t want to ride her, but I couldn’t put it down.” Charlie Deutsch – Jockey.

They are viewed with public reverence as places populated by bright, innovative and collaborative minds. Ivory Towers. But all too often, as This Unfortunate Business reveals, academics who wander the halls of higher learning have their daggers drawn. Driven by envy, they are preoccupied with their personal place in institutional hierarchy and history. Academic advancement often occurs at the expense of others - colleagues with whom they supposedly work in productive liaison. Andrew Duncan, recently appointed as chairman of a Division, is a surgeon consumed with caring for his patients. Apart from that paramount goal, there are many institutional responsibilities requiring his undivided attention. Thus preoccupied, he initially ignores his inexplicably paltry income. But he is eventually compelled to investigate the financial intricacies and inequities of the department that he oversees. His inquiries reveal staggering incompetence and probable malfeasance. Andrews exposure of this dilatory conduct and possible corruption meet with unexpected resistance and criticism from those senior to him. This response leads - not to investigation of his allegations - but to what appears to be open institutional criticism and outright retaliation. This Unfortunate Business tells of these political machinations, all too frequent in academic establishments, and how Duncan attempts to navigate through the many pitfalls set before him. Throughout his trials, he continues to perform complex reconstructive operations; one goal of his work is to demonstrate a dramatic advance in treatment of the newborn with major limb deficiencies. But can such a goal be achieved within such a dysfunctional system?
