Book excerpt: A kid filled with rage, suspended from the football team for unsportsmanlike conduct, and his father, newly home from the war in Afghanistan, reckon with the injuries they’ve caused to others and themselves in this unflinching middle grade novel in verse about love and forgiveness. Hazard’s a military kid, best known for his prowess at football, and his short fuse. His dad’s been in Afghanistan, third tour. The worry and the pressure over school and his dad are getting to Hazard until one day, the fuse sets off and the repercussions have him benched for six games and assigned to go to therapy. Which is where his dad is as well, at Walter Reed Medical Center, because he’s home now—well, most of him. Hazard’s dad’s now learning to walk with a prosthetic, but that’s not his primary injury. His worst wound is a moral injury: what he did on the battleground that he may never be able to forgive himself for. As part of Hazard’s therapy, he has to trace back the causes of his own anger by tracing back his father’s journey, through letters and emails and texts, so that he can come to terms with what he himself has done—his own moral injury—and help his father overcome his own.

Book excerpt: Stockholm syndrome or Love? When you want someone completely wrong for you... Luke Whitford has always dreamed of meeting Mr. Right. A hopeless romantic at heart, he dreams of falling in love with a nice man, getting married, and having a bunch of adorable babies. The problem is, Luke has the propensity for being attracted to men who are anything but nice. Roman Demidov, a homophobic, cynical billionaire who has a grudge against Luke's father, is certainly not Mr. Right. Cold, manipulative, and ruthless, he's not a nice man and he doesn't pretend to be. Luke is fully aware that Roman is all wrong for him. His attraction to the guy is just some sort of Stockholm syndrome; it must be. If life were a fairy tale, Roman would be the main villain, not the hero. But even villains can fall in love. Or can they?

Book excerpt: "In this collection, Stephen Sandy gathers his most striking poems from five previous books written over thirty-five years and adds memorable new ones to present a retrospective on his career to date." "Sandy has lived in some of the world's great urban centers and captures in these poems essential vibrations of modern and postmodern life." "While Sandy's poems address timeless issues, they also take up recent occurrences, including the passage of the Hale-Bopp comet and the deaths of Allen Ginsberg and Gianni Versace. A poet of wit and loss, he is deeply involved with the challenge to faith in our time; he writes out of the Western tradition in terms that are deeply tinged with Eastern thinking."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis A Treatise of Delighting in God by : John Howe
Download or read book A Treatise of Delighting in God written by John Howe and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly typeset and modernized work, one of Howe’s most popular which was originally published in 1674, is taken from Psalm 37:4 “Delight thyself in the Lord, and He shall give thee the desires of thine Heart.” Howe demonstrates the object to be delighted in (God), the access sinful men have to God (through Christ), and how God is to be considered man’s delight. He shows that the soul must delight in God, and that proper instrument of conformity arises from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then, he gives a number of directions for improving in religion, of motives and principles of a religious life, and directions on having a sole dependence on God. This points the sinner to a holy, consistent practice of delighting in God. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Synopsis The 'Jewish Question' in German Literature, 1749-1939 by : Ritchie Robertson
Download or read book The 'Jewish Question' in German Literature, 1749-1939 written by Ritchie Robertson and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2001-10-18 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish Question in German Literature, 1749-1939 is an erudite and searching literary study of the uneasy position of the Jews in Germany and Austria from the first pleas for Jewish emancipation during the Enlightenment to the eve of the Holocaust. Trying to avoid hindsight, and drawing on a wide range of literary texts, Ritchie Robertson offers a close examination of attempts to construct a Jewish identity suitable for an increasingly secular world. He examines both literary portrayals of Jews by Gentile writers - whether antisemitic, friendly, or ambivalent - and efforts to reinvent Jewish identities by the Jews themselves, in response to antisemitism culminating in Zionism. No other study by a single author deals with German-Jewish relations so comprehensively and over such a long period of literary history. Robertson's new work will prove stimulating for anyone interested in the modern Jewish experience, as well as for scholars and students of German fiction, prose, and political culture.
